His current disposal average of 16.50 is his lowest since his debut 2009 season.

It's the first time he's dropped below 20 since 2011 and way down on his career best of 29.38 in 2018.

He's had a very good career but at 31 the end looks to be coming quickly just like it did for Didak in 2013 at age 30 and there is no disgrace in that.

You get the feeling he simply can't get up and down the ground as fast as he once could and with that it's harder for him to find space to receive the ball or out work an opponent to win the ball.

As numerous people have already mentioned his best hope now would seem a transition to the role of a creative small crumbing forward and I feel McRae needs to make this change sooner rather than later if he wishes to extend his career.

Very good summary of his current situation. The problem with transitioning hom to that role is that it's really surplus to our needs. We have Ginnivan and Mccreery who I'd rather have doing that.

Yes, but inexperienced older guys aren't likely to play until they're older than experienced older guys - nor are they more likely to improve or maintain their level for the next few years than their more experienced teammates. So in terms of rebuilding and the future team, what's the relevance of their inexperience? Their age on the other hand has obvious implications. These guys don't skew our age profile - the age profile of our team is what it is.
If anything they skew our experience profile to make us look more developmental than we are.

didnt he play more in the centre square in 2018 instead of on the wing?
if we going to persist playing Pendles off half back, maybe get Sidey back in the middle and Poulter to the wing. We are screaming out for pure one touch players in the middle, he would help that.

I can’t think of a worse place to put Sidebottom save for maybe a back pocket. He may have been a one touch player once but he certainly isn’t now. He’s slow, seems to think he still has a 22 year old’s body and tries to bite off more than he can chew on the regular, doesn’t appear to be able to stick a tackle and goes to ground all the time. He’d be absolutely cut to ribbons in the centre square.

Needs to be a half forward flank or wing where he can gut run all day (it’s the one thing he hasn’t lost), or otherwise you need to hope he finds the goal sense he had at the very start of his career in a pocket.

I should preface all that by saying that I haven’t been nearly as disappointed with him this year as I was last year. Playing far less selfish and seems more aware of his physical constraints, but probably still not achieving the metrics from a statistical output perspective that he needs to.

Feel he’s let us down far less this season than he did last with decision making and skill execution

My thinking is that expecting him to run all day up and down the wing has been hurting him when he gets the ball as he has gotten older, he is stuffed by the time he gets it, so when he kicks , its affecting his efficiency and penetration

He is good in close, one touch, and very quick hand to foot ball release. Playing half forward/forward pocket permantly wont suit him, as he doesnt have the speed nor the marking strength to be a threat, only as a crumber is he half dangerous.

Fair enough rationalisation. I don’t agree but I was probably hasty in tearing it to shreds immediately :D

Definitely in the twighlight of his career, been a wonderful player and still handy, but cannot influence games and have the impact on results that he once did. Needs to be used smartly, still has that big tank and runs games out very well, racks up stats in the last quarter. Lack of pace and defensive pressure becoming an issue as he starts to take shortcuts in games.

Will move into outright 4th on our all time games list next week

Nah, he’s 4th of our current players Collingwood only games (170 between Grundy 177 - Maynard 149) 3rd current all time total games (188 total between Ronny Wearmouth 186 and Bill Twomey 189) but not even on the 1st page of all time.

Edit: ignore this post, writer had a brain fart.

I think you've got confused - it was about Steele Sidebottom and your graphic has him equal 4th and about to become outright 4th.

gee it's been a while since i checked out this thread.

last time i was here, i think we all agreed that sidebottom was cooked and turned gutless..... any update on that?

hope he gets to 300
He will. No longer a star, but he's still playing good footy, keeping his spacing in a role where he's not going to get leather poisoning, but he's coming up with a few plays a game where he does something classy that really opens up the opposition. I don't know what the negativity is about.

so he's half cooked....or 3/4 cooked....or not quite done but nearly done...

but there's no way that the remaining 10 or so games this year is going to allow him to magically get to 300. I think we agreed last year that this year was his last because of his fall in form. I'm actually surprised that he's getting gifted games at the moment, even though he still gets the odd kick.

He's still a decent contributor, as long as he's kept outside of the centre bounces. Good link up player and can be depended on to at least not completely balls up our attacking moves, which is something the guys he's keeping out of the team are prone to doing.

Him towelling up Cotteral (sp?) was a major factor in us beating the Blues too
