A bit of loyalty to your employer doesn’t go astray
But that’s just my opinion. Yours is obviously different

Did his future wife sacrifice anything ?
Loyalty to your employer in a career that rarely lasts longer than 15 years, sounds like regret just waiting to happen.

For every story like yours, there’s prob an opposing story of loyalty

Possibly - but companies are mostly unfeeling entities that will take the axe to people without a second thought. This includes footy clubs. Being loyal to your detriment doesn’t sound like a great idea to me.

Footy clubs are much much worse and for good reason. This board alone has hundreds probably thousands of posts specifically talking about who we would axe each year, and the club follow through (we’ve moved on 21 players the last 2 seasons, and a bunch of threepete heroes before that, at least a few seasons before they were due).

For some reason loyalty cards only get pulled out when talking about good players in their prime.

A bit different when talking about a once in a generation player.
I doubt hawthorn would have shown any disloyalty to Buddy.

But anyway, I’m not getting into an argument with you over it.
I’m a loyal person, it’s the way I am
Sometimes to my detriment, but I wouldn’t change it.

Footy clubs or any workplace have an obligation to foster an environment, culture and opportunities that inspire loyalty.

Bud like any employee should make decisions in the best interests of himself and his family. If they want to keep him, the swans need to deliver a workplace that makes bud think that’s staying is the best decision.

Good luck to him. I still love the guy. He had his reasons to leave us. I don’t believe it was money or a slight on us as a football club.

I think the same would apply here if he was to move north.

Ask Jordan Lewis about his thoughts on the loyalty Hawthorn showed him. Same with Ryan Burton.

Nothing wrong with being loyal - but I feel for those that misplace it. My loyalty is to my family - and if I can enhance their position by changing employer then I’m going to sure as hell do it.

I’m a loyal person too, but I don’t look down my nose at those who choose to move for love/money/lifestyle.

What was his top 3 ?

His relationship, lifestyle and getting out of the Melbourne fishbowl. Mate of mine went to a sportsman’s lunch in 2014 and sat next to Hodgey - asked him about Buddy and Hodge said every player knew he would leave for Sydney - they just all assumed he was going to GWS.

And now not Gold Coast because “still wants premierships”

Who was the emergency in 2013? He was robbed

Player wants to win flags - what an outrage. I assume you hated Frawley for signing with us in 2014 for this very reason?

Completely different circumstance because Buddy was in the 2012 grand final loss to the team he decided to join just days later.

And during 2013 he sought to squeeze yet more money form supporters with “buddy boots”

Swans paid him $10 million to be a Swans player for 9 years. He did that. He owes them nothing more. If someone wants to pay him more than they're willing to then he's free to take it having re-earned free agency for years of service.

Same way he owed us nothing more after years of service at Hawthorn and being out of contract. Only issue I had with him leaving us was how he did it. But that's all in the past.

Again with the goalpost shifting with you. We’re not talking about his 2013 decision - we’re talking about his decision now. You’re railing against him picking Brisbane over Gold Coast due to premiership windows.

I still don’t love the way he left our club but I know who the architect of that was and it wasn’t anyone with the surname Franklin.

Obviously money would come into it, maybe Sydney of the two teams gave a better and longer deal, relationship and lifestyle is fair and yeah understandable. Though 2014 still made it so good.

Sydney deal was longer. GWS deal would have been more lucrative over the 6 year timeframe (rumoured $1.1M a season) - but given that’s when his injury woes hit, he may have lost out in any negotiations then.

His decision to go to the Swans over GWS was driven by wanting to win another flag over money though - he openly stated this.
