Can’t see Cotchin getting a major gig in the 22 next year :(
Also sorry nank, just feel like his performances this year have not warranted a guaranteed spot. Miller seems to be a better tap ruck
I think Cotchin will be pushed out of the time far too good of a player.

May i ask why no Gibcus? Will only be better next year. Our best 1 on 1 defender. Once he puts on size, he'll be a 1 on 1/intercepting machine.
Also i see the reasoning graham plays over cumberland up forward but cumbo kicked way too many goals in his games to be excluded.

It’s hard to peg how much improvement the young guys (including Cumberland) will improve with another pre-season under their belt.

Obviously Gibcus falls into this category. I don’t think Gibcus can play Broad’s role, so does he improve enough to replace Balta, Grimes or Tarrant? Maybe Tarrant, and if he does, that only bodes all the better for our side.

Insofar as Cumberland, someone had to make way once Hopper and Taranto are factored in. The flow one effect is that probably means that Martin and Bolton both spend more time forward. We generally don’t play 6 forwards; we more often than not push one, or to flankers up to the contest (often the ‘Lambert’ role) or the wings (KMac and Pickett often operating as the 7/8 defenders). Think that’s what Graham does really well.

Again, if Cumberland can play this role; or maybe they give it to someone else (MRJ?), or he continues to improve he may well take that spot. And again, so much the better for our squad if he does.

Cumberland top5 in afl.. goals / assist per game.

Stiff to not get a chance round 1

Yep, very stiff.

As I look at it you either go Cumberland (top 5 afl goal + assists per game in the last 7 odd games) or Graham who is the best pressure mid statistically over the last 4 seasons).

My view is if Martin and Bolton are playing more forward than mid (which you’d expect with Hopper and Taranto in the team) that we don’t need additional scoring.

We do need better midfield defense, and thus I went with Graham.

I agree, that the big factor is the unknown of how much the younger players improve over the summer break. Great to have competition for spots and inevitably the side will be picked on how they train.

I see it a lot different to others, to me the kids will need to earn their positions more next season.
because the competition for spots will be more up for grabs.

I think people saying Cotchin won't be in the 22 are kidding themselves he was our 2nd best midfielder in 2022.
He is far ahead in the pecking order out of Ross, Sonsie & Graham.

Taranto, Hopper will come into the side takes Edward's spot & the other Gibcus. imo we were far too tall in the backline.

B - Vlastuin, Tarrant, Grimes
HB - Short, Balta, Rioli
C - KMac, Hopper, Pickett
HF - Martin, Riewoldt, Bolton
F - Baker, Lynch, Cumberland
Foll - Nankervis, Taranto, Prestia
Inter - Cotchin, Rioli Jnr, Miller, Broad
Sub - Graham/Sonsie/Ross

Pretty strong line up that, 7 man Def, Fwd and Mid with an A grade 2nd mid rotation of Martin, Cotchin and Bolton with Short to pinch hit.

I can see Cotchin, Riewoldt, Tarrant, Prestia and Martin being rested throughout the year giving Graham/Sonsie/Ross/Gibcus plenty of exposure with added games from the inevitable injuries.
This is the one for me.

2 rows of HBs is a bold strategy...

Not sure if this is the right thread for it, but, do we have any wing depth that have the same running capacity as Kamdyn and Marlion?

I was thinking maybe Banks/Brown/Ralphsmith. Just not sure if they have the defensive mindset that both Pickett and McIntosh have, let alone the aerial marking ability that Pickett especially has.

They've been so reliable, we've barely had to worry about it, but its only a matter of time until we need to test our depth.

Good question..........my thoughts would be D Rioli or Broad with HRS coming in. Balta could do it for a bit but would have to rotate with someone else, Miller?

We can't move Balta around again. The temptation is there, but he is set and forget in the backline.
It's no coincidence that our form turned around the moment he was put back there.

I like the idea of tall wingers so Rioli probably wouldn't fit the bill, unless we limit our get out kicks down the line. Which is difficult.

Dunno, Rioli has the tank, defensive mindset, good at transition and can mark and hit the scoreboard. Pretty much everything you want in a winger.

Balta has all of the above skillsets bar the tank, Gibcus would be fine for cover.

Could even be a combination of players rotating through there too, come to think of it, who does rotate when KMac and/or Pickett are resting?

To a team that didn’t lose a game after Round 6 by more than 6-points we are essentially adding TT, Hopper and Dusty….. amazing really.

And with Tassie coming in with God knows how
many concessions, it’s smart business to sort the core of our list out right now with long deals to keep them away from the rivers of gold that Tassie will be given.

We’ve just got to lock Bolton and Balta away until the late 2020’s and we are pretty much set with long-term security our list.

Hoppers inclusion spells the end for Dow & RCD & i cant see how Cotch starts in the 18 when the starting mid/on ballers would be Prestia,Taranto,Hopper
& Sonz. You have to have Sonz in there for the youth factor &
your not starting a newly signed 7 year player off the pine
It also means Ross has to suck up more VFL game time in '23 after stamping his claim for a permanent starting 18 spot late in the season with VG form

So where does this leave Graham ? could he take over the McIntosh role in '24 ?
his appearences look far less likely in '23 unless theres a mid to be tagged but RFC dont tag and with the emergance of Cumbo's X factor that
HF spot he roamed thru is no more
