If you dont think your list is challenging i struggle to understand why you would want him.
There's a huge disconnect between the reality of our situation and the thoughts of the leaders within the club. Hence why it is hugely concerning we would overpay for someone like Rioli as we're miles off being a contender. I've personally been banging on about this for ages. It's the most depressing part of our current situation. We are stuck mid table and are zero threat to the top teams and the other teams that are going past us, and the messaging out of the club and the decisions being made are completely the wrong strategy and messages given where we are at.

Not sure I agree with this, it's very easy to say with the benefit of hindsight. Literally every pundit in the country thought we were going to go onto make multiple top 4 finishes after 2014, but it didn't happen. We trade in big to correct our one key weakness with Ryder and Dixon, something that literally everyone was on board with at the time. I don't agree with all of the list cloggers we brought in after that, but arguably the only one that cost us anything was Jack Watts. Every club moves spuds around hoping to find a diamond and to be fair we have got good service out of Mckenzie and some service out of Sam Mayes/ Trent Dumont which in a trading of spuds is an okay success rate. By 2018 its clear we were wrong and clean out the cupboards in a move that a large number of players were not okay with at the time (there were panic stations that we would be bottom 4 again). Instead, we shoot up the ladder and throw out a few mid-range picks thinking we were in our window (news flash - we were we just ****ed up). The individuals might have been wrong, but the strategy until this year has been almost perfect. Dunkley is planning for the future. Rioli for a packet of chips doesn't hurt the future. Rioli for a 2nd rounder is drafting for now hoping we finish top 4 next year. We can only judge the strategy by what we pay this year.

Whilst I agree that I don't think we are a contender in 2023
  • I think you are being hypercritical of our current list and our short term prospects compared to teams going past us.
  • The same could have been said about us in 2019, before we finished minor premiers in 2020.

If we believe the Murdoch Press, and I realise it is a big 'if,' we are going to pay Rioli 600K per year on a 4 year deal. That is a significant investment in a 27 year old player who has managed just 51 games. That 600K a year pay packet would have to be some sort of record for a 27 year old player who has averaged just 8 games per season. I hope Junior is worth the money and I will give him 100% support if he lands at Alberton but I will also expect Port to get our money's worth.

Feel your pain, weve been like that since 2020 and its taken these three seasons to admit it. Kelly was the wrong player at the wrong time.

Always spin out that clubs internally overrate their lists when outsiders can see a mile off that its rebuild o'clock.

Everyone scoffed when the Crows offered Eddie Betts a big money long term deal at the same age but it turned out to be astute. Rioli could be very good for us but it depends on his commitment level and mental state.

The difference being that Betts was an elite small forward at Carlton, had kicked ~40+ goals on 4 occasions before reaching Adelaide.

Rioli's stats in his 3 seasons have been almost identical. He's a 12d, 1.1g a game player. No more, no less. Thats what he is. Thats what he'll be here.

Rioli will be ok for us. But I'd almost bet anything he will never kick 40 goals in a season for us.

Did I say he needed to play 80 games? I was replying to a person that inferred that he couldn't play to 31-32 years old despite having 2 years out of the game.
Anything else you're suggesting wasn't part of the conversation.

If he doesn't play 75-80 games for us, he's a waste of time and it's a reflection of the fact he was cooked at about 29-30 which is directly related to your point. Comparing Amon and Rioli is dumb. Stop being dumb.

There would have to be no chance we're throwing $2.4m at Junior Rioli. Absolutely none. Not even we're that stupid.

But he does have a big say on our spending........he is after all, a financial guru....

That's not how it works you bellends. Players can't be traded without consent. Meaningless bluff designed to placate the dumbest members of their supporter base. And judging by what I've read the last few days on this forum, there are a lot of them.

Just wondering, common consensus seems to be we got rid of Ladhams because he was a dick......
As much as he has apparently done some stupid things (and had a brain fade last match) I can't see where he was suspended for a couple of years for drug offences.
Seems a touch hypocritical to me.....

In 2022, the average player wage was $389,000 with a salary cap of $13.54m. With the new TV rights, next year will be much more.

We have offered $2m over four years, @ 500K pa, a small fist full of $dollars more.
The Eagle $offer was similiar $dollars but only for only three years.

It’s amazing West Coast are so upset about it. If I was them I’d be praying for a future second and be happy with a third. I get the “whole we stuck by him thing” but that means sfa when you’re trying to rebuild a list.
