The AFL is finally closing in on appointing the four members of its panel to investigate allegations of wrongdoing to Hawthorn First Nations players nearly two weeks after the damaging story broke.
The league hopes to finalise the panel this week, but indigenous barrister Tim Goodwin and a senior lawyer already working on an ongoing AFL inquiry are likely to be involved.

Kings counsel Bernard Quinn is expected to lead the four-person panel, which will delve into accusations against Alastair Clarkson and Chris Fagan.

Clarkson has vehemently denied any wrongdoing and is even keen to return to North Melbourne as early as November 1 when he finds out the process of the independent investigation.

The Roos have delayed his start date indefinitely beyond November 1 and it is not known what their view is on Clarkson returning while the investigation has not yet returned a finding.

But, given the panel will take up to two months and Clarkson’s fate will not be known until Christmas, he is keen to start his senior coaching role in some capacity.

North Melbourne delayed his start date – rather than the AFL – so it would be up to the club to make a decision on whether he kick-started his tenure while the investigation was ongoing.

The AFL tapped King’s Counsel Quinn to lead its review into concussion expert Paul McCrory’s plagiarism allegations in April in an investigation that is still ongoing.

The league said in April his strong expertise in “matters involving complex medical/scientific research” had made the senior counsel a perfect person to lead the review.

Quinn has extensive expertise in class actions and worked in the 2009 Bushfire Royal Commission after starting his career as an associate to High Court judge Michael Kirby.

Indigenous barrister Goodwin serves on a number of boards including the Human Rights Law Centre and was a junior counsel assisting the Royal Commission the Protection and Detention of Children in the Northern Territory.

Quinn is a member of the Yuin people of the South East Coast of New South Wales.

The league has pledged to find a diverse panel that will balance the competing interests of the First Nations families and the senior coaches that have their careers at stake.

Ok, all of yous on the blower to tell them that hsquid is happy to take this on.
First question: What is in the ToR?
  • Recommendations regarding culpability of individuals for a) racism b) excessive interference in players lives? [Rigorous fact-finding necessary]
  • Fact-finding and recommendations regarding patterns of clubs' potentially excessive control of players lives?
  • Recommendations for systemic improvements for support to indigenous players? / ex-players?
  • Recommendations as to financial reparations for indigenous individuals traumatically affected by their playing experience? [Rigorous fact-finding necessary]
  • For each point:
    • Is it limited to already identified individuals and incidents? Hawthorn? (x5 effort) All AFL clubs? (x18 effort)
    • Is it limited in time period covered?
Then I tell you how long it will take.
Two weeks?

NMFC never delayed Clarko's start did they? Wasn't that all Clarko? Wtf is wrong with journalists getting these simple facts wrong?
Its an intentional thing. Very deliberate use over the last two weeks of phrases like "has BEEN stood down" rather than "has stood down"

If he's cleared they can just ignore it and no one will call them on it. If he's not, they can point to being on the right side the whole time.

He is going to cultivate such an us Vs the world culture it’s going to be a sight to see.
The only saving grace is it involves Fagan too. The AFL can't afford to have one of their franchises being dragged through the mud again. They spent so much getting them out of trouble before Fagan was appointed and then in his first few years. For that reason, you'd assume the AFL will tell their media to ease up a little.

In saying that, it would be typical of the AFL media to completely ignore one club and just go full steam at Clarkson...maybe a token piece mentioning Fagan. 90/10 Clarkson's way.

Really, well it not working, because people a just calling them incompetent.

That puts lead in my pencil

I've also heard that Nov 1 is looking likely.

Sonja happy to cop the flack that comes with that. Knows she will p*** some external people off, but it is what it is.

The media will be circling like vultures come Nov 1st if Clarko returns.
But they can go get stuffed.
