What are you implying here?

Be open; this is hardly a periodical of note ...

There is nothing that indicates that any aspect of GC's operation is remotely competent.

I think the AFL has audited player payments and found a breach. I suspect it even looks like an honest mistake. I doubt it's of a value that warrants the furore that might have to follow.

Reductions in list sizes, cap decreases, it gets you part of the way there. But why their academy shining light and why pick 7.

I think the same thing happened at Collingwood.

So after, 10 days, Scott hasn't spoken to Francis and we're trying to sort that out.

That's convincing
What’s Scott going to say to Francis exactly? He’s out the door. We don’t appear to be trying to convince him to stay.

Danger is spot on, it was 'brilliant' by The Cats and they continue to win at everything, including mad monday...
they are on a non-stop winning train

I don't think it's anything as sinister as a conspiracy by the AFL regarding P7 and Bowes for a future 3rd... I reckon it's simply a matter of really poor list management, combined with the AFL doing nothing to address the growing issue of player power on the trade landscape.

If you are Gold Coast, and your TPP is surging past the cap because you can't do math good, and various contract clauses for players are kicking in, and you've identified Jack Bowes represents your best solution to remain under the cap, and he goes and nominates one club. What option to you as Gold Coast actually have?

Yeah they could've dragged it out etc, but ultimately all power lies with one party, Jack has to agree to the club he is being traded, it's of no issue to him if he stays, the club will either face all the consequences of being over the cap, he will still get his $850k.

So this leaves the Suns with 3 options:

1. Go over the cap, become the laughing stock, get fined into next century by a mad AFL.
2. Look to fire sale 2-3 players quickly that they may want to keep over Bowes ala Collingwood a cpl years ago.
3. Realise that they have a losing hand, and that giving up a draft pick is the best option compared to 1-2.

The reasons why they’ve made the deal makes sense, it just comes down to the AFL allowing it to happen, which they shouldn’t have.

Hard to justify pick 7 & Bowes moving for a future 3rd when the club has never made finals & after getting priority draft picks in the ‘19 & ‘20 drafts.

At minimum, if they are going to allow it to happen, the club receiving the salary dump should have to honour the contract at its salary & duration and not be able to extend it out to lower the cap number.

Once they tagged pick 7 to it, they didn't need to give Bowes all the power of picking a club as well. Why couldn't they say, pick 3 clubs, and we'll negotiate the best deal and send you there.

your infowars avatar is fitting!

A salary dump trade like that should go to the highest bidder trade wise. And if Bowes doesn’t want to go said club. Back luck GC.

Tend to agree - there is simply no plausible reason for pick 7 to be involved.

In fact plenty of clubs would take Bowes on without a pick at all if his salary is able to spread across 4 years ….assuming that’s being reported correctly, which I am far from convinced of. The idea that Bowes would work for free for two years…..the whole thing is baffling.

Probably next year or the year after they will be able to trade salary space for picks without a player being moved on too... it's small steps in that direction at the moment. While players have to consent and choose only to consent when they go to top sides, it seems top sides are most likely to benefit, but if they can trade cap space separately then bottom teams will be better able to trade that out and acquire the picks they need for a rebuild.
Farm clubs. Pick the best talent, overpay them to stay and then offload them to a team who doesn't even have to take on the same salary on a salary dump .

Josh Mahoney interviewed in the paper.

Preamble:
Essendon is determined to bolster its key defensive stocks through the trade period or draft as it seeks to give Zach Reid, Brandon Zerk-Thatcher and James Stewart more chances next year.

The Dons on Monday found the 192cm strong-bodied midfielder they were after in Carlton’s Will Setterfield and continued to make headway on a trade for Melbourne’s Sam Weideman.

The Dons will in effect trade out Aaron Francis for a future third-rounder and secure Weideman for the same pick in what would be an upgrade of their attacking stocks.

But having conceded too many goals to key position forwards the under-sized Bombers know they must secure another tall defender.

Essendon football boss Josh Mahoney told the Herald Sun the Dons were in the market whether it came in the trade period, through delisted free agency or even the national draft.

It has been a challenge securing players with Essendon conceding they were behind the eight ball given Brad Scott’s recent acquisition.

But the Bombers are balancing the need to take the No.4 pick to the national draft while also bringing in a key defender.
Interview.

Key defenders:
“We are in discussion with a few options for a key defensive post. We want to see James Stewart play there and we have Reid developing in that post and Jayden Laverde and Zerk-Thatcher. So we think we have got options but we will try to add to our defensive stocks. It hasn’t been through a lack of trying.

Maximising opportunities in the draft:
“We look at the draft and trade period as a collective. We have still got the ability after the trade period to swap draft picks and the drafts are coming up.

“We think we have a young talented list and we don’t want to be bottom forever so we want to maximise the opportunities when we have access to high-end talent.

“With pick four in the draft we think it’s a very valuable pick.”

Weideman:
Mahoney said the Demons had pitched to former No.9 draft pick Weideman on Monday about a role at the Bombers.

“We only just met Sam. He met with Brad Scott (on Monday) and we had some discussions over the weekend. We will see how it plays out over the next few days. We think our ability to bring another key tall in certainly helps with the forward structure. Sam played that role at Melbourne at certain stages and he was limited in his options with very good players ahead of him. We will keep having discussions with Melbourne.”

Setterfield:
The Bombers are hopeful Setterfield will join the long list of players who finally thrive when given the opportunity to play as a regular inside midfielder with centre square opportunities.

“History is littered with stories of players of a similar age to Will who have gone to other clubs and had a successful career. We will back in our program and the development of our players and are confident we will see the best of Will at AFL level.

“He suits the position we have been looking to fill as well as the age bracket. Given the opportunities we can present we think he’s a really good fit.”

The AFL have followed American sports with drafts and caps but whenever they veer off they completely screw it up.

The Suns and Giants have to offer more money to their kids so that they stay hence Bowes deal. But the indirect effect is it’s causing equalisation to go further off track as both clubs have to continually shed players. It’s never ending, King, Rowell Anderson they’ll all be gone in a few years Ana there will be more players like Bowes that the stronger clubs will benefit from.

Would be a more even comp if they cut off both Suns and Giants
