Mahoney interview on Sportsday (just the trade/draft bits):

Yeah it is getting to the business end of the trade period. I think you sort of go through a few different stages of the trade period, first of all it’s a lot about information gathering in the first few days. Then some big deals get done. Now it’s at that stage about knowing what picks you’ve got and what you’ve got to work with.

Really happy to get Will Setterfield coming into the club today and we’re working on trying to get Sam Weidman so we made some progress today but looking forward to getting that done for tomorrow’s deadline.

Is Sam [Weideman] keen to join the bombers?

He is yeah, and that’s a real positive for us. I think when we went into this trade period, obviously Brad Scott got appointed not long ago and the first thing we had to do was make sure we were aligned on where the list is at, so that was a pretty quick conversation as we were really well aligned so that’s a good starting point.

And then the key part of it was to make sure that we kept early access to the high end draft talent and then try to add some guys probably 24 or 25 years of age because as it stands right now will probably go into next season with the youngest list in the AFL.

And to bring in two guys Will and then hopefully Sam as I said gets done tomorrow, that they’ve both played 50 games of AFL footy they come with some good experience, play important roles that we need to be filled within our team.

So Josh, obviously you started behind the eight ball with the trade because of the late appointment of Brad. How much impact did that have if you know attracting players, talking to players when you actually didn’t have a senior coach for them to meet with?

Yeah <unintelligible> probably we can get to a certain stage, as list management and myself and Adrian but it does get to a stage particularly with bigger trades and targets that having a senior coach makes a big difference.

So we can progress them to a certain level but we couldn’t take it to that last little point and the question obviously is “who is gonna be the senior coach?” which is an important part of the decision for a player joining.

So yeah it probably meant we had to decide and pivot pretty quickly and this is probably not gonna be the trade period where we land some big fish, if that’s the right term? It’s really just about being really smart and calculating with the players you want to join and making sure they come in the right age bracket and protecting our high end access to the draft.

And the Jack Bowes one that’s would’ve been disappointing obviously he’s chosen Geelong and that deal got done today. How did that process work? Did he come to Tullamarine and tour? How far down the track did you get with Jack?

Yeah we got to that stage with Jack but yeah we put our best foot forward with that one. The attraction was the age bracket the Jack is in but also the pick as well so would be a perfect deal really for us as a club. so we put everything into that and obviously he made his decision and good luck to Jack and hope he has a good career at Geelong.

Are there any other names that the bombers are looking out in the next 24 hours? Is there any talk of Liam Stocker from Carlton or the like?

No our focus now will just be on getting Sams deal done and as I said we made some good progress with Melbourne and hopefully yeah that’ll be done tomorrow so that’ll round out I’ll trade period.

What about the draft what kind of players are you looking at there to bolster?

Yeah it’s gonna be an interesting draft for us at the moment we’ve got picks 4 and 22 and who knows some things can happen not only in this trade period but right up to the draft and draft night but right now we think there’s a good group of players you know, we won’t have access to the top three but from 4 to 12 there’s a different sort of group probably a lot of midfielders in that sort of group that are there so. Will probably just look at the best available player at that stage and also at 22 as well.

So Josh you’ve been mostly able to keep the playing group together so are you settled the Aaron Francis will be heading to Sydney?

It’s looking that way I know Aaron has expressed that he would like to look at that opportunity. The tricky part is that he hasn’t met Brad Scott yet at all, so we want to make sure that we get that opportunity as well. But if that works out and Aaron wants to take that opportunity we’ll look to do something with the Swans but if not we also want to make sure that Brad gets an opportunity to speak to Aaron as well.

Once they tagged pick 7 to it, they didn't need to give Bowes all the power of picking a club as well. Why couldn't they say, pick 3 clubs, and we'll negotiate the best deal and send you there.

Bowes probably said no to the trade unless they let him choose the destination. He has them over a barrel.

The saying "over a barrel" is a strange one so I decided to look it up. Dictionary.com says: This slangy expression, first recorded in 1938, supposedly alludes to reviving a drowning victim by placing the body head down over a barrel and rolling it back and forth, so as to empty the lungs of water. The expression survives, although happily the practice does not.

You learn something new every day.... which is another interesting saying, according to the Christian website churchofjesuschrist.org..... ok never mind, we've probably had our fill of religious discussion for the time being. :p

Thanks Lore.

I am finding it interesting that I've only really heard Mahoney talking about the list this off-season.

You pulling my leg?….. I always thought it was over a gun barrel.

So like they have a gun to your head. 🤷‍♂️

Oh, I should have been clearer. I’m only hearing from him and not Dodoro
I think they’ve been trying to hide Dodoro away since the Richardson era, more and more hearing from the GM-Footy and the CEO.

A lot of the re-signing news has a quote attributable to Mahoney (or Richardson/Campbell before that), rather than Dodoro lately too.

Not sure if it’s anything to do with him personally or if they’re just trying to move the club brand away from that cult of personality in the off-season.

Also the origin of blowing smoke up someone's arse.

Also the origin of blowing smoke up someone's arse.

I wonder which came first. The saying don't blow smoke up my arse or the understanding the practice was useless.

The AFL have followed American sports with drafts and caps but whenever they veer off they completely screw it up.

The Suns and Giants have to offer more money to their kids so that they stay hence Bowes deal. But the indirect effect is it’s causing equalisation to go further off track as both clubs have to continually shed players. It’s never ending, King, Rowell Anderson they’ll all be gone in a few years Ana there will be more players like Bowes that the stronger clubs will benefit from.

Would be a more even comp if they cut off both Suns and Giants
The afl need the giants and suns.
Half the problem is player managers using these 2 clubs and bending them over barrel to overpay their clients to put them on contracts that far out way their performance, using the move back home leverage. Swans don’t have the same problem and they’re in nsw and lions don’t have the problem and they’re in Qld. Giants and Suns need to draw a line in the sand and stop bowing down the player agents. Having a player only staying at your club because you’re paying them 20-40% above their normal value is a bad starting point for culture.

Pretty simple solution to these first rounders wanting out;

First round selections = 4 year deals
Second round selection = 3 year deals
Third round selections = 2 years
Fourth round onwards = 1 year deals. This includes dokies and SSP

If you pick a shit first rounder and want to delist, do so at one’s own peril. Furthermore, by year 4 a player is established or not in the industry, giving drafting club more power at the wheel for the first three years.

Those later selections have always been throwing darts at a draft board.

And just on the ‘salary dump’, I really like the idea of being forced to pay what said player is needing to be paid so to not have the ability to ‘smooth out’.

Geelong have enough perks to seduce players ‘home’.

To blow smoke up someone's arse then really is the same as to piss in someone's pocket.

I'd love to see Menzie pissing in pockets all over Australia. Just own every pocket, Jye.

It's cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey is an interesting one.

Lions and Swans have winning cultures though that give the club that bit of leverage in return, not to mention a lifestyle that offers players a bit more anonymity and, let's face it, warmer climes.

I still can't help but wonder what GC would look like if the list and management was reversed with GWS.

I see virtually no reason Victorians, West Aussies and South Aussies would stay in Brisbane and not GC.

They're onto build/rebuild 3 and the coach has burned through 4 top 10 picks, 1 of whom was actually a flight risk, and their list management is still a shambles.

They seem not to have placed any emphasis on building team around characters who actually want to be at GC.

I now read that Bowes' family relocated to GC and became involved in player welfare. Was his grandma even involved?

The club is not struggling because it is on the GC. It is struggling because at every part of its history it has been run by idiots at AFL house and on the GC.

It was always going to be raided for talent. Rather than putting together a team of hardened pros to set the foundation to capitalise on its competitive advantage, the beach, the weather and bikini clad women (seriously were talking about getting 18 year old professional sportsmen to go and do a job), it's been wasting its time and cap space on (potential) superstars.

It's not like they didn't have Roos' Sydney as a model.
