It was a major problem - he was at work and his wife at home with a baby. They were in a new estate and apparently the developers pumped water into a sewer pipe to dislodge a blockage but there was a flaw in the plan.

It took something like six months for the house to be cleaned, replastered, new flooring and appliances etc. before they could move back in. Happened about 20 years ago.
