Others have stated this but I want to emphasise it. DGB’s known characteristics translate really well for him as a fwd.
1= He fearlessly goes for a mark and usually takes it. 2= he reads the ball well. 3= He fearlessly goes for a mark and usually takes it!!! This matters.

In his draft year DGB was a defender. His tenacity and commitment to winning the ball made him a nightmare match up for most fwds. Hence his high draft position. He would beat them for the mark.
But in the years before he was also an effective as a fwd.

The Hawks backline looks good without him. He is not a rebounding backman... instead he is a shutdown backman without the bulk needed to do the job on the bigger guys. For now, he is not needed down back.

DGB as a swingman. Now that is something to develop. Ask Denver if he wants to kick some goals …. What do you think his answer will be?

DGB is like TOB, But where TOB was “almost”, DGB will be ”achieved”.

You're referencing DGB's year at WAFL level mate.

He's fearless, no doubt. But he hasn't shown at AFL level he "usually marks it".

Massive year for DGB 2023. I can't see us throwing him forward when he's yet to have arrived in his natural position.

Getting separation forward would be massive issue for him also. Even the very best power forwards in the game only take a couple of contested marks deep a game.

Jeka needs to be given first crack if he earns it over preseason. Seems he's training with the forwards now too.

We should be pushing for next year.
Might not win but would be mad not to aspire for a deep run into finals in 2024.
things can change so quickly in professional sports

it only takes one year with a consistent 22 and few injuries and a random team can overperform as they grow in belief. just last year, collingwood a perfect example

while its probably more unlikely than likely that we'll play finals next year, it doesnt make sense to put a ceiling or timeframe on performance and improvement

it's not mutually exclusive to have a long-term list plan and a short-term list plan. like we can be looking to replace Breust long-term while also trying to win games with him in the team lol

With one night of camp still to come, the Hawks completed a gruelling running set after training, returning to Federation University for hill sprints next to the cabins they are sleeping in.

Endurance machine Changkuoth Jiath led the charge alongside Maginness, with Ned Longand Weddle not far behind, ahead of Moore and ruck duo Max Lynch and Max Ramsden

Well argued point. However I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Sam Mitchell is aiming to play finals in 24

100%

This “slowly slowly” crap that people run with is self-limiting and the sort of rhetoric that loser clubs allow to erode their culture if they ever said it out loud.

Every club should be looking at tomorrow being the very next opportunity to improve. Sam obviously feels this way with his comments around the improvement he can see and putting no speed limits on how fast we rise, and the players have rightly bought in.
That doesn’t mean we make finals in 2024, but the players and club should absolutely feel like that’s the aim and have the drive and belief that it’s achievable.

This story got more of a beat up than any of our players.

I'd be more worried if any of our players didn't take it personally to being dumped in a tackle. That's just asking to be bullied by opposition teams.

Loved the mongrel from Butler as well. Not taking a backwards step clashing with Sicily and Frost. The coaches and his teammates (even Sicily and Frost) would have loved to see that from a young guy.

CJ uses the word special more than Bruce Mac

The issue is we have to try all our resources that the current List has. If there are blokes like DGB, Frost, Scrim, even Imps together with the aforementioned four small forwards plus Serong, just do it. Find out.

I am also an advocate for trying Dimma further up the ground.
Yes!… see all resources …

Our biggest guys that could play Full fwd…. DGB, Meek, Reeves, Lynch, Kosi, Jaka, Frost, Scrim, Greene, Long..

A simple marking comp. 1:1, body on body (with 20 balls kicked) to see which of the players are the best contested mark. Who ever wins gets the marking job in R1 in the fwd line. Sometime the simplest thing.. a marking competition… actually shows who is the best mark.

And it also hardly ever happens; "this year we will have 6 wins, next year 7, the year after 8, etc etc"...it's NOT what happens at all in reality.

Stability for extended periods at one end of the table, or large impovements and regressions in a year, are much more the norm...

Agree I love the attitude Sam is instilling in the team, a constant focus on smashing short term goals and disregarding speed limits to achieve the ultimate goal.
Sounds like everyone has bought in which personally has me as excited as I’ve ever been supporting this great club of ours.

There are people on this board that would genuinely get upset if we made finals this year. Not worth the effort trying to tell anyone who is that irrational about non-linear progression.

Sorry I’m gonna say it - love the endeavour but didn’t need the fend off only to cough the ball up. Great first step but then burst 5 and get clean hands to advantage.

You do realise that he has probably handballed to the guy who tackled him's opponent who would now be free?. Drawing players to him before dishing off is what we want our mids to be doing. ADusty has made an art form of it.

Well, they're idiots.

There. It had to be said.

Things going well I think Bruest can play longer than that if he wants
Breust will play well over 300 games when he is done. Durable as you can get. Has at least 3 years at a good level left. Can see him push it to 4 if we are close to being in flag contention even as a bit part player. We have time to get the guys around him up to the level we need IMO. There is no rush yet.

Just thought I would add my 2 cents on the Hawks Captaincy/Leadership decisions happening soon

I think having 2 Leaders in each area of the ground is a starting point for the Leadership group, from my PoV Sicily and Frost seem the best options in defence (Sicily has the respect of the playing group and Frost doing charity outside of the club and seems to fly the flag when needed) Morrison(who is a good voice on field) and I was thinking maybe Newcombe who is newer to the starting 22, but has shown strength and resilience to make it, but lacks that natural leadership personality as a quiet guy, but could lead by example? I think he or Worpel could get the nod and I like the certainty of Newcombe more imo, then the forwards are easy Lewis (good voice on field and seems to be respected) and Moore (charity and respected person, so much so he could be captain or vice captain imo) stand out as the best leaders amongst the forwards

For me the captaincy could be a toss of the coin between Sicily and Moore, popularity vote says Sicily captain, Moore vice captain, but it could go vice versa imo and be as effective, this is my view as an outsider looking in.

Great second effort from Long (?) to nail the follow-up tackle after being side-stepped though.

Edit: just noticed about 10 people have said that already. Bit slow off the mark!

Is it just me or are our players doing a lot more media spots than in the last 5+ years? A wider variety of players, and both at the club and out on radio, etc.

Good prep for future captain™
