Didn’t know where to put this and this thread seems closest. Does anyone know if there is any evidence that the Footscray Football Club evolved out of the football club known as the Saltwater Boys?

I remember reading an article in which there was one line saying this but have not come across anything else. Just wondering how old the club actually is.

Club’s origins date back to the early 1870s. I think “Saltwater boys” is a nickname that was used around the turn of the century, rather than a separate club.

Some history on the clubs names in this site

Great photo, this was R1 1977 for those wondering.
He only took one mark that day. Didn’t get picked again until round 13 … a fine reward for one of the marks of the year (unless he was injured all that time).

And it was the fifth last game of his 66 game career. ☹️

I guess everyone’s entitled to their 15 milliseconds of fame.

Do we know if he hung onto it ?
Would never have thought he had that athletic ability.

Colin Dell takes a screamer at Vic. Park, mid 70's. Wonder if there is anyone out there that saw it live, looks just as good as Jezzas and some others that they rave about as the greatest marks of all time.

I was probably there, long time ago and not too many happy visits.

This is what I used to think of when I heard his name.

Who is the guy on the left?
Obviously, the others are Templeton and Quinlan.

Just curious!!

I wish! Although the real GJ and I had a close encounter at the Geelong Rd end when he was in his prime, and I met him again in the rooms at Waverley during a mid-week Escort/Ansett? Cup game in 1979. The days of the white jumper with one vertical red and one vertical blue stripe, and the second darker Pyrox logo.
(Hence my BF moniker.)

Also got into a lift with Stephen Phillips and Jack Edwards that night, and stood next to Bluey Hampshire, Ian Morrison and Alan Stoneham in the rooms pre-game, and they all looked H-U-G-E to a teenage fanboi!

I was there and the next week it was the front cover of the footy record if I remember correctly. Great memories.

l was actually there that day. A friend who was a collingwood member got me into the game. We got there about 9.30 in the morning and l got injured when hit by a pushbike breaking my hand. They took me down stairs under the grandstand and the collingwood trainers attended to me. l was running on adrenilin. If my memory was right we only just lost that game. The mark was on the members side of the ground
