Another U18 Academy training session took place last night. Gameplay drills involved stoppage situations on the wing with a ball up that was often tapped down by Read to onballers like Rogers who would win the ball, clear the pack with his evasiveness/speed and would hit Walters lace out who was running leads from the goal square. You could see the high level connection when those three were all involved in the passage of play and it's hard to not get excited when you see it live. Also, Rogers looked just as impressive as he did in the NAB Academy over the weekend. Lombard was also training with the mids for anyone wondering.

Allies squad announced tomorrow!
Exciting stuff! Walter, Rogers and Read are obviously automatic inclusions but I'd expect to potentially see a few more from our academy like Will Graham.

Some Jed Walter to brighten up your friday:

I thought he was a bees dick away from a big game in this one, just slightly misjudged a couple of high balls and his teammates kicking to him wasn't the best. Even so, you can see his talent and work rate. Pressure acts immense.

A lot of people comparing Jed to Charlie Curnow. I can see the straight line speed but not the agility and freakish skill. For those that have watched him a lot, how do you think he compares in these two areas?

Tbh I think he’s a touch overrated. Certainly draft material but not top 10 with what I’ve seen. I’m no AFL recruiter but I’d have Rogers as a late first rounder 15 or there abouts, Walter an early/mid second rounder in the 20s and Read not too far behind him, maybe in the 30s.

Corbett and Graham are smokies for a rookie spot. I like Zanker Close too has some AFL attributes for sure

Think Walter is going to be the perfect Casboult replacement as a faster, more skilled and better pressure game version. He won't be the prodigious talent that King is but he will compliment him perfectly. Those saying he is only a top 30 player are on meth.

Definitely looked like an almost game for Walter. You could see he got his hands on the ball virtually every time he competed in a marking contest, had no issue crashing packs against grown men and chased hard when defenders around him had the ball. He certainly has superior athletic attributes when compared to most players his height and I guess that's where the comparisons to Charlie Curnow come from.

Keep in mind Walter is still 17 years old in that video playing against AFL players in quite possibly the most difficult position to play. It's a massive ask to perform well in that game when you're the CHF. Very interested to see how he goes for the Allies in the national championships against the best players in the country that are his own age. You'd think it's pretty likely he'll be named in the U18 AA team for a second consecutive year.

Worth mentioning that Caleb Nancarrow played for Scotch in the APS competition yesterday and was apparently really good in the first half.

Academy team got the W today with walter named best and read and Rogers also amongst them. Anyone see the game?
Really interested to read how Walter went and how many goals he kicked in what looks like a really solid win.

Rogers, Read and bottom ager Lombard were also named in the bests but perhaps most exciting is that 15 year old Beau Addinsall was named in the bests.

We've got some serious talent coming through our academy for multiple years!

Beau played with my boy at Burleigh last year.
Absolute jet and top kid.

Greater Western Victoria Rebels?

In Melbourne for work, so wandered out to Ikon Park yesterday afternoon.

The U18 boys played GWV Rebels, who were 3 and 1 coming into this game, with wins over Geelong , Bendigo and Swans.

Apparently, this is the first time a male U18 Suns Academy Team has beaten a Victorian NAB / Coates team in Victoria, with the Suns winning 71 - 54 in a quality game of footy.

From the outset the Suns dominated the ruck. Read racked up 24 hit outs and 27 disposals, with Dawson adding 12 hit outs and a major. The GWV rucks only had 10 hit outs between them.

Walter was unstoppable with 6.1 and was the clear BOG. His size, skill and athleticism are well above this level of footy and GWV had no answer. Walters long range goal kicking was on song, and his ability to snap goals on the run at full speed was awesome to watch. I imagine there would have been a number of scouts at the game, and they all would have been licking their lips. Hudson at 191cm was undersized at FF, but they look to be trying to get games into him at this level. Dawson was far more threatening coming off the bench.

Rogers and Lombard were good in the guts, as was young Addinsall. Graham tackled himself to a standstill, but was noticeably limping in the last quarter. Hay had little impact on the wing on his return to the team after injury.

Williams was a rock behind the ball, marking everything that came his way and finding outlets by foot. Kid reminds me of Collins from the seniors, just needs a few more cm of height and the mo. Uwland had 18 disposals off half back, but doesn’t seem to have the leap or hardness at the footy of Bodhi yet, but he is only 15. Eckersley disappointing at CHB with only 8 touches.

Could easily be 10+ players from this team selected in the Allies squad, but I am lead to believe only 6 Suns will be named.

Some video game numbers from those lads.

If we cant pick em all up (due to list sizes etc) at least we can bank on them coming home one day.
