As an old fart I was thinking about this on the weekend, while I was watching some guy who probably breaks into a cold sweat from right in front easily kick a standing snap from deep in the pocket (might have been McKay). I think the ability to use a snap from an angle has led to the accuracy stats holding up - even the greats used to miss occasionally from the pocket (not Plugger) because they used a drop punt (and had two other blokes hanging around near the man on the mark). The other thing is that the Pluggers, McKennas and Dunstalls would take a huge proportion of the set shots. These days more players without a good drop punt get exposed because they're expected to take their share of shots. Is this concrete evidence that despite what old farts who yearn for the good old days of the VFL that goalkicking is actually better than it used to be?
