Coach John Longmire - Part IV has resigned

This is why in Roos day the succession plan was for Lyon to eventually take over from Roos.

Longmire was encouraged to apply for the Saints job and was red hot favourite. That was until RTB chucked in a late application. Apparently he gave a great interview, especially on strategy and tactics. Horse never had a shot.

He was told or no new contract
Devils advocate here - last year when the Swans were on a great run, Pyke seemed to receive a lot of credit (here and in media) for the improvement in our offense. Given that so many on this forum gave Pyke the credit, does that now mean that Pyke is somewhat accountable for our poor ball movement this year? However I haven't heard anyone complain about our assistant coach, but all the blame lays at Horse's feet.
Now, I've got no idea on the inner workings of the club so the above is just a observation rather than my opinion.
Also of all the current coaches (who have coached more than 3 seasons), Horse has the second best record behind Chris Scott. AFL Coaches Records & Statistics
Don't forget that many Cats supporters felt the same way about Chris Scott - will never win another premiership, can't get his team up for finals, perennial chokers.. the point is if you consistently keep a team up eventually the ultimate success will come.
Injuries have been a huge factor this year. It has exposed for a lack of depth so certainly some questions need to be asked of our overall list management, that said I feel our best 22 is very good, just need a KPD to sure up our defense. Have a look at West Coast and how the are going with half their entire squad out! Yes Pies had a few injuries too at different times but doesn't compare in anyway. Believe that someone commented that McStay is their best forward. McStay was 3rd best KPF at Brisbane and never exactly dominated a game. Yes Jeremy Howe is a gun but he is the only defender they have lost. You take the top 3 defenders out of any team and see how they go. Guarantee they will all leak goals.
Overall the Swans are definitely down on confidence and connection is lacking, but we can't have a knee jerk reaction where not much has gone our way. Let's see how the game stacks up in the back half of the year with some quality coming back in. I bet you we'll knock over some top teams.

Isn't that a credit to the club as well then that we haven't gone down the Carlton route of sacking coaches as soon as we don't get the result we're after?

Sure. However we have not been getting the results in big games for a decade. We have had two diabolical GF losses and a third where he played injured players and we still should have won, despite the umpiring.

This Seasons loss to Geelong is the worst H&A performance I can remember. It was way worse than the loss to Carlton in Rd. 6 in 2017.

Horse has reverted to time discredited tactics and selections.

People just making s**t up now in this thread. Pretty Pathetic when you think about it. Talking complete s**t here won’t remove Longmire as much as you hope it would. Children.
It's not the time to remove him , i just don't think he should get another contract

A lot of it was forseeable though.

Paddy was always high risk (multiple concussions which are cumulative)
Reid high risk
Buddy 36
Rampe 33.
On this basis, most of the the following people at Geelong should be injured
Mitch Duncan 32
Tom Hawkins 36
Isaac Smith 34
Zach Tuohy 33
Gary Rohan 32
Patrick Dangerfield 33
Only one out of those is currently out - Dangerfield due to a fairly freakish injury

I agree re Paddy and Reid. But Buddy and Rampe hardly have injury plagued careers.

The game plan changed because of Pyke who was brought in to freshen it up as Horse was not up with the modern game
I don't know that I agree with this bedders. Having rewatched the entire 2020 season a while back, you could see us trying to play the exact same game then that we played in 2021/2022. A very aggressive, attacking take-the-game-on style. It mostly failed, because we were doing it with mostly raw youngsters and players who simply weren't very good at it. But occasionally it did work and came together, and that's how we got rousing victories over Adelaide, Hawthorn, GWS and Melbourne that year.

That was all pre-Pyke.

The success of a team is the accountability of the coach but that many other people contribute to this, particularly assistant coaches. Tigers had some terrific assistant coaches during their reign, Craig McRae was their developement coach, Leppa, Kingsley..
It's no different to a small organisation. You may have a reliable CEO/GM but if he doesn't have the right leaders around him he'll struggle. Horse is not able to individually motivate a teams of over 30 players, he relies/delegates certain aspects of his leadership to his assistant coach, forward coach etc etc
Don't get me wrong the coach is the most immportant piece but if we want to review something this may be an area that needs to change.

Watching tonight's game I ask myself "what needs to change?".
1) That footy is good enough. The ability to play that footy consistently which has physical, mental and skill components.
2) IMO where we have seen issues is in the mental area. We have a psychologist. Are we using her effectively? Do we need to change our approach here? I believe so.
3) We have also recruited too many smaller bodied types who get beaten up in the important games. Recruitment.
4) Skill under pressure. Do we train under pressure?
This is why we employ a high performance manager, except recruitment. Start marking the actions that will lead to winning competitions.

So no mention of the coach in this post ?

In the latest episode of "2023 is the stupidest season on record" Horse has had the following occur this season alone:
  • Biggest losing margin in his coaching career
  • 2nd biggest AFL winning margin
  • Highest score ever as a coach
  • A completely scoreless quarter

Absolute joke of a season

Those variables are insane.

It's like we are in a sports simulation and someone is trolling the club.
