12th place - #8 Elijah Hewett

Hewett.jpeg

Total votes - 9.59

Ranking - 12th

A fantastic debut season from Hewett who looked explosive and comfortable with the big stage. Started off his career as a sub before missing through injury but then finishing off the season by playing every game after the bye. His best games were probably Round 20 v North where he recorded 21 disposals and a goal as well as Round 22 v Fremantle where he recorded 20 disposals and also picked up a Rising Star nomination.

Another youngster with an encouraging debut campaign, Ginbey debuted in Round 1 and immediately looked liked he belonged. He played every single game up until his year was ended via a hamstring injury in Round 18 v Richmond but he gave us plenty to be excited about in the weeks leading up to it. He had returns including 12 tackles on debut against North in Round 1, 20 disposals and 8 tackles in Round 3 v Fremantle where he earned a Rising Star nomination, and 16 tackles in Round 9 v Gold Coast. Hard not to love how hard this kid works.

The top 10 WCE players for 2023 as decided by you starts tomorrow and is to come from:

Jayden Hunt
Elliot Yeo
Tim Kelly
Oscar Allen
Luke Shuey
Liam Duggan
Brady Hough
Alex Witherden
Jamaine Jones
Bailey Williams

Any surprises in that group or anyone you think should be in there?

I think most Eagles' fans would not have expected Hunt to be in the top 10 when he arrived.

He has been a fantastic pick up by the club.

From what I read about him I was expecting a zippy small defender who barely touches it and butchers the ball when he does. He has been brilliant though, and has added dare and speed we have lacked since Jetta.*

*Some good games from Jones the exception.

1 to 10 below.

Tim Kelly
Oscar Allen

Brady Hough

Shocked Hough made it.

Somewhat harshly, I didn't think that Witherden had a particularly standout year but I must be wrong as he has Top 10ed in both our count and in the JW Medal. He only missed 1 game for the year so in a season of unavailable players, he was durable which was invaluable. Recorded over 20 touches in 11 of his 23 games and his best return was probably Round 19 v Carlton where he recorded 30 disposals and 7 marks.

2023 was a season lacking continuity for Yeo as he went through another injury ravaged year. As is pretty clear from his votes breakdown below, he would miss a block of games then play a block before getting injured (usually when he would up his minutes in the midfiedl) and missing another block. Still managed some good numbers including 26 disposals and 5 marks in Round 12 v Collingwood (which earned him Best on Ground honours) and 30 disposals in Round 13 v Adelaide.

Excellent year from Hough who seemed to find a nice role for himself down back. He had a couple of injuries (as is the case for 95% of our squad) but definitely entrenched himself in the Best 22 in 2023. Back to back Best on Ground performances in Round 17 v Brisbane (22 disposals and 14 marks) and Round 18 v Richmond (18 disposals and 6 marks) as well as a strong game in Round 24 v Adelaide (26 disposals and 12 marks) were some of his notable games this year.

2023 marked the end to Shuey's brilliant career in the blue and gold. The skipper struggled with injury this season and eventually had to pull the pin when he realised his body was letting him down too often but the games that he did play were often very strong which is shown by his three Best on Ground performances of: Round 1 v North (27 disposals, 4 marks, 8 tackles and a goal), Round 15 v Sydney (28 disposals, 5 marks and 8 tackles) and Round 16 v St Kilda (28 disposals and 9 tackles). The eagles retirement that’s hit me the hardest.

He was still a star, just the body couldn’t do it, every game he played he was a jet :(

Horribly under-rated outside of WCE.

Classic case of 'if he'd played for...' he'd have been a star in the way Danger, Dusty, Pendles etc. were.

Easily in the best 10 mids of the decade but wouldn't make the top 30 in most lists except those compiled west of the Nullabor.

A strong year from Duggan who has claim on the now vacant captains position in 2024. He was consistent this season and played almost every game where most could not. Put up some good numbers including 33 disposals and 9 marks in Round 17 v Brisbane, 33 disposals and 13 marks in Round 12 v Collingwood, 35 disposals, 12 marks and 4 tackles in Round 11 v Essendon, and a Best on Ground performance in Round 9 v Gold Coast where he recorded 32 disposals, 4 marks and 4 tackles.
