I can guarantee you, they are taught all these things at training, and I have seen these girls do these drills, positioning and strategies at training and make them look good.
The difference between our players and the players that play at Melbourne and some of these other top sides is that when they get into the heat of battle, they can still perform the same drills and movements and set ups they do at training.
Our players tend to get flustered on game day, and everything that they’ve been taught goes straight out the window, and they just bomb blindly under pressure because they’re not composed. This isn’t just our junior players, this is some of our senior players as well. The amount of times I’ve seen a senior player standing at the top of the 50 ignore the lead of one of her teammates in space, to then kick it long to the goal square straight to 4 opposition players standing by themselves, is enough to drive any coach mad.
Lots of that is down to coaching though. Coaching is more than just implementing the right drills and making sure players do them correctly, there's a mentality and confidence element that they need to build from the top. Confidence in yourself, your teammates and your gameplan comes a lot from how a coach delivers their message and interacts - I think a lot of the getting flustered and taking the wrong option things you're talking about stem from feeling hesitant/uncertain and going into shells. Craig McRae wasn't a good coach this year just because of his drills or strategies, he took a group with a bunch of difficult personalities and gave them the confidence to play instinctively and for each other.
You hear those comments from Prior sulking about playing a good team after being gifted an easy fixture so far and still not winning games - I'd want a coach giving us the mentality of "we want to play the best teams in the league and challenge ourselves, cause that's who we'll need to beat in finals, that's our goal." No wonder our players are getting flustered by a good side if the coach is flustered by just being fixtured to play them
