B: Ryan Cox Walker
B: Clark Pearce Chapman
C: Sharp Young Brayshaw
F: Frederick Treacy Erasmus
F: Jackson Amiss Emmett

Mid: Darcy Serong Johnson
Int : Aish, Sturt Walters JOM

Early pressure in a game is critical, Walters is a gun but is struggling to chase when the game is on early. Huge call on Fyfe and maybe a full pre season will make a difference, but on last years effort the young guys like Johnson and Erasmus will move past him as a mid. He is not a forward unfortunately. Hate to be the coach , tough calls needed.
You and I have the exact same side. You are clearly an excellent judge.

This is what I think we should try and roll out. Start out with the talls on field with a mid-heavy bench to help with mid/fwd rotations.

The whole team can rotate in any direction to cover loss of injury on all lines.

Unicorn starting on ball to add that big body. ;)View attachment 1865430
Pretty much the team I'd name. Had Emmett on bench and Fyfe sub. Probably because I lost a little faith in Fyfe's body holding up. A fit Fyfe obviously is wasted there.

Perhaps 1 of Sharp/NOD/Stanley graps a wing spot over the offseason. But not sure who he replaces.

And I want 2022 Brodie in the team but again can't find a spot. 2023 not so much. Was only solid in WAFL.

It’s hard to fit them all in, especially when the kids are developing well, feels like we can only play one of JOM, Fyfe or Brodie. My personal preference is to start Brodie and sub him off for Fyfe. JOM misses out in this scenario.
Other option is for JOM to spend more time forward but is that at the expense of Erasmus or Emmett getting a game?

Can't wait to check out the scratchies early in the new year. Likely to see Chapman rotating through the wing. He operates well in that mid ground space, l reckon if he takes to it he'll be a great boost to the wing role for the team.

He has the physicality, intensity and depth of vision to do the heavy wing role superbly.

Bored at work, thought I'd have another crack at it this year. I might make another one closer to the start of the season after a good look at the side after a full pre-season.

I really wanted to get Emmett onto the side but went with Noddy instead. Even then, that's tentative. I really wanted to get young in the mids somehow but it's starting to get crowded in there now. I'd somehow find a way to rotate him through there during the game.

And if O'Meara isn't in the leadership group in '24 then Johnson takes his spot in the starting lineup and Brodie possibly takes his spot on the bench.

9/10 people will hate this best 22.

Ryan, Pearce, Chapman
Clarke Cox Walker

ODriscoll. Serong. Brayshaw
Darcy. Young. Jackson

Frederick. Taberner. Walters
Switta. Amiss. Treacy

Bench: Fyfe, Johnson, Erasmus, Aish

Sub: O’Meara

A fit Taberner should be best 22.
I don’t hate it because of Tabs, in fact if we are chasing McDonald, I’d like to see if the three Talls + Jackson as a mid/Ruck can work, I do think you’ve got one too many mids, unless Fyfe, JOM or Ras are going to rotate through the forward line.

It’s just my view but Amiss, Treacy and Jackson work in a coordinated manner to break up the defence with divergent leading patterns. Tabs runs across everyone and while he can take a grab and run all day, he wouldn’t be my pick amongst the forward talls. He is not a huge defensive asset either when the ball is turned over.

great observation about Taberner and I totally agree.

If I was coaching him, I would make it simple for him. Maybe, one of two instructions.

I agree with you about too many midfielders.

We would have to give some of midfielders other roles.

Young - mid/def
Aish - mid/def
Ras- mid/for
Jackson - Mid/Ruck/For

Fyfe is best when he plays midfield and then runs into the forward line.

I want to see a place for Wagner, based on the demonstrationed hard work and run&carry style of his 2023 & what he continues to show in pre-season (thus far). He’s the opposite of stagnant on the field & his instinct is always to drive the play forward. Reckon he deserves some plus for that.

I agree Wagner was a line breaker who took the game on. We look so much better when we have that fast rebound into our forward 50 before the opposition defence is bolstered with mids. I thought Walker also created run and carry, it didn’t always come off but eventually he will improve as gains confidence.
It’s hard to fit that many backs into the backline, even if you move Young into the middle. Clark, Aish, Walker, Chapman , Ryan, Wagner need to squeeze into four positions assuming Cox and Pearce are in the key positions.
A good problem !

I really like Erasmus as a half forward.Good there by you and the poster you are complementing. It seems we have too many onball mids in most of the best 22's Ive seen here. Playing Erasmus across half forward could be the way we get him regular game time. He certainly excelled in a half forward role in a number of games in his junior career.

I don't hate it for Tabs, I hate it for the e on the end of Clark. XD

Round One: Starting Backline

B: Cox Pearce Ryan
HB: Clark Wagner Walker

Really not any different to last season. Wagner's run off half back is very reminiscent of Collingwood/Giants' play style so he gets the final position over other players.

Notable omissions:
Chappy: Has missed out on multiple seasons of footy, needs to play a few games in the WAFL

Hughes: Depth player but should be the first in the que should there be any injuries

Worner: Will need to build case for selection in the WAFL

It's interesting to see so many best 22s without a defender on the bench. Just doesn't seem plausible. We consistently run with 7 defenders, and not because JL's a "conservative coach", match committee is "too weak to drop Pearce" or anything like that. It's because very, very few players are expected to play 100% TOG. Some KPPs go at 90%, but generally, it's 80-85% for non-midfielders and less for midfielders.

Talk of X "dropping back for a few minutes" doesn't cover it, either. Even if all 6 backs play 90% TOG, you're still looking at 60% of a full-time equivalent defender that needs to be covered (i.e. covering the 10% shortfall of the other 6). The reality is that the max would be 2 x 90% (KPDs) plus 4 x 85% (general defenders), leaving 80% that needs to be covered, which is more or less another full-time defender.

If the 7th defender is to be covered by others “rolling through”, you’re looking at a situation where 4 of your mids are spending a good 20% TOG in the backline (incredibly unlikely, imo) or a couple are playing dual position, splitting their 80% TOG evenly between midfield and defence.

I actually like that second scenario because it opens up space to run more players (e.g. Jackson, Switta) through the middle and to build genuine dual position capacity in our core mids of the future. So you have Young splitting his time between defence and on-ball, and Aish splitting his time between wing and defence.

But — and this is the key point — if we take half of Young and half of Ash out of the middle, these shares have to be replaced. And, again, they have to be replaced not by someone “running through for some minutes” but by someone spending a decent chunk of their time there. That’s not so big a problem in relation to inside positions, but (e.g.) Aish spending half his time in defence, means another person needed to fill that time on the wing. In other words, you need two full-time wingers in addition to Aish.

I went through something similar in a longish post earlier this year:

Walker, Pearce, Ryan
Clark, Cox, Chapman
Sharp, Jackson, O'Driscoll
Frederick, Treacy, Erasmus
Walters, Amiss, Fyfe
Darcy, Brayshaw, Serong
Aish, Sturt, Johnson, Switkowski

Aish = back/mid/wing rotation
Sturt = forward rotation
Johnson = midfield rotation
Switta forward/mid rotation

Darcy, Serong, Johnson, Erasmus = mid team A
Treacy/Jackson, Brayshaw, Fyfe, Switkowski = mid team B
