Lol. Just got a "Notice of Apparent Failure to Vote" letter for the Dunstan By Election. It actually gives you a chance to explain the reason I didn't vote. I'm wondering should I go with:

a) I completely forgot about it and didn't even realise it was on.
b) I was away that weekend
c) Why should I, and everybody else in the electorate be inconvenienced just because the local shirt lifting member decided to quit half way through?
d) I really couldn't give a * as they are all lying hypocritical bullshit artists who just feather their own nests.

All of these reasons are both true and valid. Do you think any of them will get me out of the fine?

For a serious response, surely your best option is to just claim you did vote by post? Should be unprovable?

I reckon Option A will be your best bet of escaping the fine. It’s believable to forget about a by-election, it’s not like a state or federal vote that’s in the news every 5 minutes.

I got out of a Melbourne City Council election fine using this reason. I obviously didn’t GAF about it to begin with but also genuinely had no idea that voting was compulsory (as it isn’t in SA for council elections). So yeah, I plead ignorance and they dropped it.
