It was 20 years ago today …
Sergeant Sheedy taught the Bombers to play. They were guaranteed to raise a smile.
So may I introduce to you, the act you’ve known for all these years: Essendon Bombers’ Broken Hearts Club Band.
The Bombers’ drought of finals’ wins is no longer a teenager. On Wednesday, the monkey on every Bomber’s back turns 20.
It’s a birthday most of Melbourne will celebrate, while the black and red section of the population lights a lonely candle in hope.

Hope that when the tide turns, the only flood will be an emotional high.
It’s 20 years, Bomber fans.

Essendon this year had 147 more frees than us in total, that's 6.3 more Frees PER GAME than us and all they could manage was 11th on the ladder!

Considering it can take only 1, maybe 2, maybe 3 free kicks to turn the entire course of a game it's absolutely inexcusable.

Given a free kick is roughly worth 1 x inside 50 on average, and an inside 50 on average is worth roughly 1.7 points on the scoreboard, the Bombers are getting above 10 points advantage on us per game from the umpiring.

If you adjust the season to Bombers getting our umpiring they finish 7 wins 16 losses with a percentage around 81%. Still a fair way better than us but absolutely abysmal when they had no injury crisis to deal with like we did. It would be 15th placed Bombers way behind 14th.

If you didn't do that but rather gave us their umpiring, we'd have an expected result of 4 wins rather than 2, and 74% rather than 64%. We'd have finished 17th but with the 16th best percentage. That is with the eye-watering injury carnage of course.
