How shit the narrative is about the post game incident, rather than the game itself, which was a terrific exhibition of two teams busting their gut to win the game.
Rioli so influential. Has been, in most of ports close wins this year. A super recruit by port. Would love him at the blues.
I...
Which players improved?
O Hollands, TDK, Crippa, Cowan, Owies, Carroll, Cincotta.
Which players went backwards?
Walsh, Cerra, Cottrel, Motlop, Martin, Durdin, Cuningham, Marchbank, Boyd.
All others stayed neutral. Arguably Weitering had worse year and yet won AA. I may in the minority here...
Norm Smith was massive on training the basics every training session.
Pendles has spoken about how, at every training session, they work on ground ball get basics for 15-20 min.
Steph Curry, practices the basics of shooting at every training session and before a game.
Most teams warm up on...
My observation is we have built a game plan that plays to one of our strengths, contested marking. When we have TDK, Harry, Charlie and two mids in Kennedy and Cripps that can take contested marks along with Martin when available. We anchor our forward transition through them a lot and it works...
Already covered.
Too many underdone/injured/desperately out of form players.
Coaching looked a mess however doubt that would have made diff anyway. We were improvising with players we had.
If we can hit the end of year with our best players on the park next year we are still a seriously good...
There is story that matt rendell tells about craig starcevich, when he came across the saints from brisbane.
Essentially, he didnt train the saints hard enough, they were a lot younger and had less preseasons in them, than the lions. It complete ****ed their season. They couldnt run out games...
Based on evidence last year, we started winning games once we had martin, fog and cuningham come into the side.
All forwards. Each offering something different. Elijha covers cuningham. Fog remains and martin will be the main piece we are missing and need to replace. That will be hard, as he is...
Hawks game and gws game keeps reminding us of the importance of high half forwards. Players that contribute immensely in team defence, primarily at stoppages and loose ball gets. But can then transition forward with hands, kicking and endurance with reasonal speed to spread forward again.
Any...
Love the post, however modern football is all about pressure. Speed allows you to close space and penerate quickly on turn over.
Our pressure is great, but we are are battered and so its dropped off and without speed we are vulnerable
Keep the funnies coming peoples.
about the game,
pies pressure game has certainly ramped back up to last years levels and its allowed them to control games. Their turn over game is not quite at the same level and hence they arent bossing teams.
Reckon the competition has also caught up with...
Lack of composure when pies put the heat on effected the game. Lots of fumbling. Im slightly suprised we didnt handle it but it ultimately cost us the game.
Its not on coaches that players repeatedly missed shots directly in front.
That was a 4 goal win we couldnt close out. Lots of players...
Saints now have Simon D, ex Sydney draft guru. Unless SOS gets stubborn, i expect they will do well this year and wont be trying hold grudges against carlton.
I used to think the same. He is actually poor as the defensive mid. Watch him at stoppages in d50 and he often loses his man. Perhaps as the protagonist mid, with a licence to attack he might be good. Unfortunately we dont have depth in his position down back, so unlikely.
Points Against looks horrible on the ladder. Been that way for most of the year, except in the earlier rounds when our defence held us in games. We have been tinkering all year with the right blend of offence and defence and we need to recalibrate again.
Scores from stoppages is a real issue...
A couple of observations
We are trying to take too many marks in our backline, but with mcgovern out, it led to ground balls that the bull dogs cleaned up. At least 2-3 goals given up when a punch was more prudent.
Marchbank was avg but its his first game back in a long time and historically...
TDK went from dominant to dormant after qtr time. Briggs changed his approach and we then started to lose clearances. The giants then used their leg speed on the outside to chop us up.
Way too many passengers tonight. I could name them but wont. But our pressure around the ball was not good...
It was a win full of spirit and determination. Loved it. It demonstrated we can play in different ways depending on what the opposition throw at us.
Our front half game looks much better with Williams and Fogarty in there, and Saad back.
Still have concerns with decision making from Boyd and...
