The big issue with Oliver is that he is a disaster off-field, but it’s not exactly like Smith is clean and he has the knee. It oddly makes sense, even though Smith is younger.
An arbitration panel for unrestricted free agents would have solved it, and make the acquiring club pay in draft pick points rather than bumping others down the order.
It’s utterly stupid as it is now.
It’s the “just for the sake of it” trades that end up burning you.
I occasionally invoke our epic 2003 trade haul of Koops, Street, Morgan, Veale and Rawlings as a reminder.
For the princely sum of the Nathan Brown compensation and our second and third round picks in a spoon year.
Strongly agree on this. I think he’s just become a whipping boy. He was relatively inexperienced when he got the job but people have zeroed in on him like he’s 2002 Nathan Eagleton.
Often when we’ve brought in a player who had fallen out of favour (ie Cloke) we’ve got them out for a late pick.
I doubt another club would want to trade much more than a late pick for Daniel. I’d love to be wrong.
I’m not that fussed if we aren’t very active this year. If a player that slots straight into the 22 becomes available then great but otherwise getting back into the draft is fine by me.
Probably, and if we were to trade JUH you’d have to expect something similar.
If we were to consider it I assume it would only be if there were major, major red flags and the club wanted to cut ties (like Melbourne are apparently trying to do with Oliver).
There is probably a very niche market (probably young women who aren’t welded to a club) who would go to some games because of him, and he probably sells some club merch.
Also probably helps with overall club engagement on social media, which the club uses to drive membership, attendance etc...
I hope so, but Smith wasn’t in his way this year.
I think if he irons out whatever annoys the coaching staff so much that they drop him out of the entire squad periodically (brain implosions part of it apparently) then he will be fine.
Regarding us not being a destination club, I do think it’s true we are never really in the conversation for blue chip trades (ie Jeremy Cameron) and we get passed over a bit by bigger name players when we are linked.
That’s a double edged sword though. Trying to pull those kinds of deals off...
I’m speaking totally with the benefit of hindsight of course, and focusing only on the return for the player.
After 2016 the club knew he was trouble but had a premiership to defend and probably hoped he’d turn it around. I don’t really criticise them for that.
If he’d been put on the market...
In my mind JUH is clearly a top end talent and if the only consideration were the potential heights he might reach you would just keep him.
The only reason we should consider trading him are the rumours regarding the off-field side and the fact he has games where (as Rocket put it after the...
Just remembering some of the players we’ve taken in the teens over the years, the good:
Clay Smith
Callan Ward
English
Weightman
Richards
The less good:
Christian Howard
Ayce Cordy
Obviously we don’t know much yet about Busslinger and Croft.
Short point is that if we’re getting pick 15...
