News Hawthorn in the media 2024

If it was a Hawks v Cats Grand Final, I’m sure the neutrals would jump on us (like 2008). This Geelong team is a machine, even when they are not very good they grind out prelims and flags - and get better and better (Bailey Smith).

Play Nice 2024 AFL and State League Attendance

Reminds me the mid 1990s when North Melbourne drew 66,000 plus against the Bears to a Preliminary Final (the week after Essendon got 86,000 against the Eagles in a Semi Final). Edit: Geelong drew 72,000 to a Semi Final against the Eagles in 1992. I guess after more than 30 years and massive...

Rumour 2024 Hypothetical trade and FA Thread

There is no guarantee that our development will be linear. The Dees wasted 2019 and 2020 before saluting in 2021, Collingwood jumped up in 2018/19 before going again in 2022/23 and Richmond screwed around in 2014, 15 and 16 before getting the shit together in 2017. Given the Hawks age profile...

Autopsy Hawthorn pipped at the post by Port Adelaide

Hodgey was very, very happy with the Lions win. He has a strong Paul Salmon vibe (who now apparently supports the Hawks despite playing 80 percent of his career at the Dons)

To be fair, the 2001 Semi Final was probably our best win from the ‘91 flag right through to the 2008 GF. But, we won that coming from 17 points down at 3/4 time, during the Ansett strike with a team of absolute spuds. With a decent coach Port are arguably the most talented team in the AFL...

Autopsy Hawthorn pipped at the post by Port Adelaide

No problem, he’s in the media, that’s his job. He’s not a Hawthorn supporter, never was and never will be. He’s also a 300 game champion of the Power and has an older brother currently employed by Port - who could lose his job if Josh Carr takes over. He was (and still is) a strong supporter...

Autopsy Hawthorn pipped at the post by Port Adelaide

The AFL is wedded to make Haw v Ess their second round 1 blockbuster - so expect that from now on (especially with the last two years drawing 70k). We haven’t played return matches against the Dons since 2018 (non Covid impacted) and Carlton since 2006. So we are due for one of those two (both...

💯 The great fear is that the ‘great’ Semi Final win will gaslight any very real and rationale concerns that Port supporters have with their coach. I hope for the sake of Port Adelaide fans next week is either a win or a massacre so that the club can push for a clean break instead of another...

In fairness last year’s top 6 included Collingwood (missed finals), Brisbane, GWS, Carlton, Melbourne (missed finals), Port Adelaide. Even though we finished bottom 3 we still ended up with double ups against Collingwood and GWS. How many will get next year? Probably Geelong (Easter Monday...

Oppo Camp 2024 Finals Discussion (other games)

Would be 4 GF’s in 10 seasons, and 3 as Minor Premier. The Swans are 5 from 18 Grand Finals though, and have a much, much worse strike rate than the Pies in the Grand Final. I pray that they can pull it off

Port Adelaide’s wet dream would be a sacking next Monday, so we’ll be facing Josh Carr

The 2023 Saints (and 2022 Dockers) had a very different list profile to the 2024 Hawks though. Compared too What made our numbers extremely impressive is that the age and experience were far lower than performance metrics like goals kicked. That said, the Dockers really should have made...

I see more similarities between Hawthorn 2024 and Port Adelaide 2013 to be honest (the huge win in the EF followed by the lose against the experienced Cats smarting from an unexpected QF loss) We came from so far back and had no pressure all year (like Port in 2013). Next year will be far...

Analysis Hawthorn rebuild: are they tanking?

I agree. We were close but I just couldn’t see us handle the tight confines of the SCG (without Frost, with an injury hampered Sicily and without the class of Day) or better still a rampaging Geelong (who slaughtered us twice this year) in the big dance. For what it’s worth I think Port will...

Jesus I hope not! 2002 to 2004 was the worst time I can remember being a Hawthorn fan. Two years of complete and utter nothingness followed by the year from hell

Analysis Hawthorn rebuild: are they tanking?

Hawthorn was never a realistic shot at a flag this year - to suggest otherwise is hyperbole. Hawthorn’s defensive and forward setups were recalibrated on the run thanks to critical injuries to Blanc, Sicily (who played with one shoulder for half the season) and Lewis. Because of this, the...

90,000 plus would be massive but it should draw well into the 80,000’s. For some context, the same final 20 years ago: That finals series featured two semi finals at the MCG - one that drew 50,000 (St Kilda v Sydney) and another that drew 52,000 (Geelong v Essendon) Admittedly the MCG had a...

Analysis Hawthorn rebuild: are they tanking?

Hawthorn is so far from the finished article that it would not surprise me if they entered 2025 with a completely different spine and system. This year reminded me so much of Hawthorn circa 2006 - that team had an extremely raw Franklin, Roughead, and Lewis but tapped into players like Boyle...

Adelaide and Sydney are the two best cities in Australia to visit - we could have big finals in both cities! Not to be this year!!!

Autopsy Hawthorn pipped at the post by Port Adelaide

There is no way that Hawthorn was going to win a flag this year. This was building block for a flag in 2-3 years (and we may drop a bit next year before we go to the next level) A tight Semi Final loss sure beats getting smacked at the SCG against a team, and on a ground that we have struggled at.

Analysis Hawthorn rebuild: are they tanking?

On the bright side, as bad as Hawthorn has been post the hat trick (and 4 flags in 8 years), and for a time it was the worst Hawthorn team since the early 1950s, we never wooden spooned. That said, I do agree, it would not surprise me if Hawthorn slid next year and had a bit of a come down...
