That's a key point that's often missed in these discussions. The institution is called the Australian Football Hall of Fame, not the VFL HOF, and inductions/elevations are based on performance in all the major leagues, as stated in the criteria of the Hall. Saying that players, coaches, etc, who...
Of course not, Polly is number one on my own list of greatest footballers, so he's a fixture. Just need to balance all the small men with some marking height.
A very good stab at an all-time indigenous team, although it's a bit lite on pre-1980s footballers. As per the official Indigenous team of the century,
Bill Dempsey (West Perth)
Norm McDonald (Essendon)
Syd Jackson (East Perth, Carlton)
Ted Kilmurray (East Perth)
Michael Graham (Sturt)
David...
Great work by Ken Mansell and Michael Riley.
The earliest VFL stats I can find are for the1930 Preliminary and Grand finals, both Geelong vs Collingwood. They were published in an obscure corner of the Sporting Globe, so I would assume they were the work of Dave Stewart. The next year Stewart...
Collingwood were not one of the oldest clubs, but as the 1896 VFA premiers, they were among the strongest. Among the oldest were fellow VFA clubs Melbourne, Geelong, Essendon, Carlton, South Melbourne, Fitzroy, and St Kilda, who six months later were all competing against each other in the VFL...
Great your facts straight Hairy. It's NOT the AFL Hall of Fame. It's the Australian Football Hall of Fame, and it has a specific mandate to include players and coaches etc from other leagues in the pre-AFL era. Before the 1970s most of the top players from WA and SA did not play in Victoria...
Last night's group of inductees is a reasonable selection given the post-1956 bias of the HOF. In fact I would have been surprised to see any old timers. It's just not in the selectors mindset. i.e, if they're not on TV, they don't exist.
Great to see Bagshaw finally get his due, and as a Tiger...
Disappointing to read people here proclaiming they 'don't care' about history or that it's completely irrelevant to them. Some seem to take pride in their ignorance, too, which makes it all the more amusing. Express an opinion by all means, but make sure it's an informed opinion rather than one...
It's a good outcome as far as I'm concerned and reflects essentially what I argued for in an article a few years ago. It actually goes further by extending the period back to 1870 (pre-VFA), but delineates the premierships and records between the comps, which on reflection is a better idea...
Working class men always wore suits, ties, and hats to the footy. The boys were caps. Women always wore a dress and hat.
As in many areas of society, everything changed in the 1960s. Younger men stopped wearing hats and started to grow their hair longer. Significantly, the first US President...
Thanks 'Daics'
I am following the thread and trying to keep on top of the changes being made to the record. The various historical errors that have been uncovered here are a great boon for all of us who have an interest in accurate footy history and records. Well done guys.
As far as australianfootball.com is concerned, we now have every VFA q-q score from 1897 to 1960.
The divisional system was introduced in 1961, but as yet we only have Division One scores for 1961-1970, and finals thereafter. In the off season completing the full VFA scores (Divs 1 & 2) through...
This may help, with the streaks at least. We're a long way of complete individual stats, unfortunately,

Not a book, but I'm working on a State footy section for my website. Full q-q scores are not far off although complete team lists and goalkickers are probably a year away.
Hi Michael, well done with those excels. One point I'd like to take up is the economic cycle one, ie., major changes in the 1890s, 1930s, and 1990s. The first point is that it's really the 1970s (rather than the 90s) that is at the core of all the major changes to footy in our lifetime, ie...
Yes indeed, Footy Week was the first publication to keep detailed match stats (under the direction of Ray Young), and is the source for most of the 1965-1973 period.
The founder, Harry Beitzel, was good enough to allow my site (australianfootball.com) to reproduce articles from Footy Week...
This is an idea whose time has come, although I do hope its done in the right way.
In 2012 australianfootball.com published an article on this very issue. I subsequently had the chance to meet with Colin Carter, Geelong president, who passed on my article to the AFL commission in support of...
Very good discussion of some of the problems with these types of lists. I'm a list person myself, it's good fun coming up with top 10's of this and that, but if it's going to be an 'official' list that carries weight it all gets back to who is on the committee that selects the list and what are...
Basic stats such as those were often reproduced in the newspaper for Grand Finals and other important games from the 1930's through to the systematic stats record starting in 1965. Frustratingly though, it's only for the big games and sporadic other games that we see them.
Still, it's great to...
For the best part of fifty years, Jack Regan (Collingwood 1930s) was almost universally regarded as the best full back the game has seen. His place was certainly challenged by Southby and Dench in the 1970s, but if the TOTC had been chosen in 1985 instead of 1995 Regan would probably have got...
This is an issue I addressed in a recent article, but if I was pushed to name a top 20 most egregious omissions from the HOF (pre-1956) from among the many potential candidates I listed, it would be as follows (alphabetical order):
Jack Baker (Carlton-Player)
Bill Bateman (Fremantle-Pioneer)...
We are planning to create our own Teams of the century (in addition to reproducing the teams created by John Devaney, although he didn't create his own HOF as such). We just need to finalise some website development that will allow us to create standardised templates for these teams and a...
So much VFA history has been lost, literally thrown out with the rubbish, especially when clubs moved and disbanded, but also during regular 'spring cleanings' and when senior officials retired (taking boxes of material with them!). I suspect a vast amount of additional material was 'lost'...
Thanks for sharing that list Ron. I had no idea that BVs were not awarded for those games. It complicates the adjusted BV per player calculation even further!
