Clearances are more effective when the mids are on the move, if the ruckman can hit the ball to their advantage, then it helps. Unfortunately Marshall’s weakness is his tap work, our mids are pretty much flat footed most of the time or reactive / 2nd to the ball, that’s why we’re after Soldo...
Agree, Ryder is twice the ruckman Marshall is, even though Marshall gets his share of clearances, these are often blind hack kicks and more often than not chopped off by opposition.
With a proper tap ruckman, it will make it easier for our mids to get the ball first rather than chasing tails all...
Peatling is not worth a first round, plain and simple.. yes, he played a couple of good games, but he is not a consistent good player yet.. Future 2nd is about fair.
Soldo for future 3rd is also about fair.. he hardly played this year..
All 3 can intercept, attack and lock down, that’s the beauty of it.. maybe Mclennan is more of an intercept marker/lock down type and less attacking. if we nail a couple of key defenders including Cole, future backline is sorted
Then you need to sacrifice 2 first round picks and risk the future, which is what we don’t want to do… It’s a balance act… If we can get someone like a Kennedy in for a 3rd round pick (#50 odd) to provide immediate help to Steele whilst still draft 2 top young mids for the future.. then why not...
The fact is that our midfield needs a huge surgery. Macrae in, Crouch and Ross out does not move the needle much.. If Macrae or Steele gets injured and they will, we’re back to square one being the worst midfield in AFL, drafting kids is all good, but 1st year inside mids cannot shoulder all the...
We need to rotate 6-7 players through midfield, not just 3-4..
Seniors: Steele, Macrae, Jones, Clark
Juniors: Philipou, Windhager
That’s not enough given there will always be injuries
Hence we need more mids, Kennedy will be an inside bull next to Steele, see Macrae as an inside/outside mid...
Exactly, we need multiple experienced options.. otherwise, if Steele is injured, we’re back to square one.. Plus contested ball is our biggest problem, never a bad idea to fix this in one shot with Kennedy and Macrae. To me, Macrae is inside/outside.
To me, Jagga looks more of a butcher with the ball..gets it a lot, but not high impact. not a fan to be honest..
Jagga = short handballs, dinky kicks, ordinary kick
Reid = clean, attacking, excellent kick..
Not really a good deal I think.
Carlton will be in the finals again next season..
We Lose: Pick 8, future 2nd (around pick 29 if we finish 8th)
We Gain: Carlton’s future first (around pick 11-18, Cerra, Soldo
Cerra being a big injury risk after 5 hamstring this year and not playing should...
Agree.. if we can land Peatling and Macrae + draft 2 young mids with pick 7&8, would improve the midfield by a big margin. Crouch is obviously done unfortunately
So in summary:
Trade in
1. Dan Houston - AA Utility 27yo (can we do this with without coughing up pick 7 or 8? maybe use next year’s 1st round instead)
2. Macrae - Mid 30yo (3rd round)
3. Reeves - Monster ruck 25yo (4th round)
4. Taylor - HF with x factor 24yo (4th round)
5. J Serong - 3rd tall...
We need top midfielders, and not just 1 because we have literally the bottom 4 midfield. If you think having 1 top pick will fix the issue, then we have learnt nothing from our recruitment lessons in the past, nothing is certain, top 3 can be a bust (Philips, Dow etc.) so if you get an...
Paton - Gone
Hotton - 50/50
Hayes - Gone (waiting for a trade?)
Jones - 50/50
Membrey - Gone (looking elsewhere)
Howard - 50/50
So with 5 already delisted (Van Es, Campbell, Bonnet, Allison, Ross) and Battle gone, we’ll be looking at 10+ changes this off season. Year of exploration has finally...
Hopefully lots of these linked players are just rumours, Laverde, Houston, Shiel all rather old and doesn’t really help us.. Tomlinson might be a stop gap as key position depth if we can get another young key back.
Should not go for Houston at all.. he turns 28 in May next year, basically only 3-4 good seasons left.. He might be a gun but is half back what we really need right now? Need to invest in the future and develop our own young guns..
Saw Alex Davies in a couple of Suns games. Big and strong for sure, but also very messy on the skills, kind of like Owens.. Would prefer Peatling at this stage..
Fact, gun mids are often full time mids in juniors, takes years to train skills, positioning, awareness etc.
Owens was a small forward in juniors, after a growth spurt, played wing in the final year with a couple of stint in the midfield. I’m not saying he can’t be a mid, but just because he...
Lindsay is not a top tier mid in this draft, prefer Langford over Lindsay to be honest.. he looks like wing / HB to me with little congested ball winning ability which is what we need
Agree. That’s why we should load up as much as we can this year as well.. Trade next year’s first round pick, trade existing players if they want to leave and package the picks to get another a first round pick. Imagine having 5 first round picks.
Pick 7 - our own
Pick 14- split pick 8 (battle...
Exactly, apart from Crouch who was a contested ball winner and now injury prone + Marshall, we don’t have consistent ball winners in the midfield, need to fix that first.. already have enough light, outside runners.
I think there will be more movements this season.. A lot of the old brigade may not gel very well with the current regime/high level of standards.. e.g. Constant talk about young players like Owens, Windhagher setting standards at training.. More players will move, let’s embrace change and...
Battle wanted to join his boyhood club, and we hopefully receive above the market compensation (pick 7/8). Win/win. End of story..
Battle is a good player, a third tall, only really came on in the last 2 years.. People carrying on like Battle is a superstar.. I was devastated when Plugger left...
Definitely has a touch of class about him, like Sinclair or Sidebottom.. prefer him than Travaglia who apart being fast and aggressive, don’t seem to have the skill set to become a gun mid..
