I wouldnt hold my breath waiting for Cole to be AFL ready he will struggle with the speed and continuity of the game in the VFL. I know the club will take him but I personally very much doubt he makes it. Think about Cordy level is my estimation....
It's crazy to write off a kpd based on their draft year. They take a long time. Respect your opinion but he's the metro full back, he is as good a chance as any.

Jimmy Webster
Ryan Byrnes
Liam Stocker
Angus McLennan
Max Heath
Isaac Keeler

Byrnes is unlucky not to be offered a longer contract, I dont know what the kid has to do to prove the club his worth!

Hotton & Paton missing from that list probably leans towards them being cut.
Could depend on what happens with Hayes, Howard, Jones & Membrey.
Would like to keep Jones & Membrey.
If? we bring in Laverde & Tomlinson then I suppose Hayes & Howard are expendable.
Howard's form was pretty decent in 24 though.

Just get midfield, midfield, midfield and more midfield, or we just park ourselves in the middle of the ladder going forward.

I’m surprised they haven’t resigned Howard yet. None of the guys mentioned Tomlinson/Laverde are as good as he is.

Also, I thought it had been confirmed/reported the saints weren’t offering Hayes a contract, so what are they waiting for. Surely no one trades for him if he will be delisted anyway?
There was rports that it ws being negotiated. probably not finalised yet

Paton - Gone
Hotton - 50/50
Hayes - Gone (waiting for a trade?)
Jones - 50/50
Membrey - Gone (looking elsewhere)
Howard - 50/50

So with 5 already delisted (Van Es, Campbell, Bonnet, Allison, Ross) and Battle gone, we’ll be looking at 10+ changes this off season. Year of exploration has finally arrived and gone.

Howard & Jones more likely to re-sign, especially as they've had no interest to note.
So even 10 is alot, 9 last year.
If we recruit FS- Peckett, NGA's- Cole & Hofman, Sandy rookie, use 4 earlier draft picks. That leaves us with 2 experienced players to trade in or just pick up.
Ladlams or Soldo could likely be one of those.
I'd rather Tomlinson instead of Laverde & Taylor.

Draft Picks:

1. Lalor- a Jack Steele with more explosiveness.
2. Trainor- key position swingman, best rated tall in this draft.
3.  Oliver- a Sinclair with a harder edge, elite kicking
4. Boxshall - hard nut med.sized mid/def. who team mates love

FS & NGA's:

1. Cole- similar to Zac Dawson???
2. Hofman-???
3. Peckett-Frankie's boy

Sandy Rookie:

1. No bloody idea

Trade in on the cheap:

1. Soldo or Ladlams

2. Tomlinson

The monthly reminder that the draft capital we gave up to bring in multiple best 22 players ended up only being 1 first round pick and a bunch of late picks.

They spent capital up on mature recruits too. Howard, Ryder, Hanners, Parker, Hind, McKernan, Frawley, Highmore, Hunter, Wilkie, Kent, Young etc. They stepped out of a path focussed on the future for some kind of fantasy footy game. The end for guys like Carlisle, Stuv, Roberton etc wasn’t the time to load up on older players. If you think it was good management you are a weirdo.

The Saints kept falling for the old routine of trying to prop up field positions no matter what the age or current form of players. We need get best available talent first, instead of looking for quick fixes and the dream of instant success, as that is what has held the club back for years.

If I may zag for a bit...

At the end of 2019, it was clear we needed outside class. We needed another tall defender. We needed a pressure small forward. We needed another ruckman.

So we went and got them.

North Melbourne just keep picking at the top of the draft and taking the best available. They have a surfeit of inside mids.

And they need outside class. They need a tall defender.

There's no right way to build a list. There is certainly a wrong way, so I guess the right way is "not that", but it doesn't always work. There are many reasons a player might not make it, whether they walk into a club at 18 or 29 years old.

If there is an opportunity to trade in for need, we will do it and hopefully not at an exorbitant cost. Otherwise just get the best players in and develop them.

Surely we can all see the development has improved. Five hands down best 22 players (none KPPs BTW) have walked through the door via the draft in the last three years. Grab another 2-3 this year and that is an excellent basis for prolonged competitiveness and better.

But don't discount if suddenly Zac Butters became available this time next week for a fair price. You have to assess opportunities when they arise with the best information you have at the time, which is what I think we did in 2019.
