Is he actually injury prone? Averaged over 18 AFL games across the past decade. Only played 8 senior last year, but still managed 10 reserves. Had the illness thing fairly recently, but it’s not like he was completely off the park. 180+ across 10 reads pretty well, compare it to most of our...
I think Weitering and Young are the only two currently signed for 2025 who would be #1 key defenders, the others I'm fairly comfortable with 2nd tall (3rd only in some cases). If it's one or two games you can make do, but more than that & it's a worry. I'd definitely be going EP over SD for...
Height & weight isn't the be all and end all. Jack Buckley looks to only have about an inch and a kilo or two on Haynes. Nathan Murphy was a similar size, same for Kolodjashnij and Henry at Geelong.
He's not playing the number one spot, he's the second tall. If Weitering is unavailable...
I'd take Phillips without thinking twice. We've got a heap of taller players that have some versatility, to varying degrees of course, but not much in the genuine key defender category. Broad key/tall/3rd categories from how I see it:
Key Def: Weitering, Young
Tall Def: Weitering, Haynes...
I just figure seeing as Ollie's training at halfback and Doc's been continuing the wing/mid/hff that they'd continue that. Probably Ollie playing that high half back role that's just further up the ground, and Doc slightly ahead as the defensive side winger. Probably not all that different...
FB: Haynes Weitering Saad
HB: O.Hollands McGovern Cowan
C: Docherty Cripps Acres
R: De Koning Cerra Walsh
HF: Kemp McKay E.Hollands
FF: Motlop Curnow Williams
INT: Boyd Hewett Smith Moir
SUB: Lord
EMG: C.Durdin Binns Fogarty
Boyd in for Newman, Doc as the defensive side winger sitting...
Maybe 4 in the first half then a calf/quad/hamstring/shoulder/all-of-the-above at the start on the 3rd.
Find it hard to see him playing more than half a season. Even if fit Cats will manage the s*** out of him
Rather than him actually playing midfield or wing, it might be to get a bit of improvement in him for defensive stoppages close to goal, an area we've had a few significant and notable errors the past couple of years.
from my perspective, the risk of reducing rotations and/or bench size too significantly is that we might end up with a match day team filled with Cottrell types because their output is deemed greater than others who can't run flat out for the entire 80mins (time on) of a game.
After his interupted and disjointed season this year, I doubt it. If he returns to '23 form then it'll help his deal, but he's hardly going to get TDK money just because he's out of contract.
You forgot Binns.
But BC is apparently an inside mid, LC a HB. Doc closer to the end as mentioned, maybe wing or a utility kind of role, or sub, etc. OH could continue at HB depending on options. Cotts is more HF for mine, and personally I don't have him in the seniors.
I'd like to see...
I’d say in order of probability, at least for the first chunk of the season is:
1 Moir
2 Lord
3 Wilson
That being said, yet to actually see Wilson. Who knows.
Would be pretty stoked if all 3 have forced their way into the team, like the attributes they bring.
Good rant.
Really liked him, but not sure Kennedy was our 4th let alone 3rd best mid.
Also CP will be 30 before the start of the 2026 season, and still on 7 figures +CBA inflation, so if Pies are willing to use their 2026 and 2027 picks to get him (on account of not having 2025 picks), then...
