In hindsight, last year's draft was all about getting quality in the side and it showed with how many games the rookies played.
This year's draft I think is all about the depth and upside. There's no pressure on these players 26-30 on this list to play and it'll let them focus on development...
Having only 9 emergencies for a game day squad of 21 is small, you definitely need cover from every player. Last season only Deed (midfielder and we were stacked there) and Dumont (rookie spot shenanigans) didn't play.
This year's rookies did well, a lot of them played integral part to our good...
Yeah after last season's high turnover this does feel excessive. 14 in two seasons is almost half the list.
Haven't heard anything about signing anyone in this DFA window that ends today, so draft will be interesting. Won't necessarily have to take all selections, they are allowed to have 2...
Wow, I mean, their spot in the team has always seemed low on the list, but is this the draft to grab 5 players from? Do we still have another DFA period to come?
I guess its a case those that are in the team now are "established" first teamers and last years crop are the next to come through...
3 picks in top 30 in the draft, I'd now say that's a clear indication of how we're going into the draft, unless tomorrow Melbourne agrees on pick 28 for Harris.
Expected another player to go, didn't think it'd be Stephenson. Really good club servant. A bit like for like player wise too defensively with Allen, though Lou at least could play up ground if needed.
We seem to still be quite busy. Losing Breed because we've left a tier spot open for Harris...
Melbourne want too much, fair enough pulling out of all that musical chairs. I'm fine with Harris coming here, but not for a first pick given she's barely done anything on the football field since 2022.
I have no insight into how they decide to struture the tiers or whos confirmed on what tier but I'd be surprised if Bodey or West weren't recruited to take that other top tier spot along with Bates.
I'd also have Wales up in tier 2 before before I put Breed there imo, but I'm not sure we know...
Saying our backline needs to get smaller is certainly a take and then some given it was Richardson at 170cm that was our main lock down defender, Everist at 179cm the tallest and Kemp (170cm) and Elliott (172cm) were the others and they all almost always played on bigger matchups every game. Add...
After last season and the big list turnover we had then only to finish as high as we did, have to trust the list management team now imo. Not sure how Coyne and Allen will fit in our backline bit will see. Versatility seems to be a common theme with most of our recruiting.
Losing both Breed and...
Don't like how it makes the forward line more crowded and impacts playing time of Hipwell, Vukic and Butterworth if trying to fit everyone in there.
Certainly quality when fit so no problems there. Also manages to make certain demographics pissed off just by existing, so that'd be entertaining.
She's our best player, doesn't mean she has had the best season. Eliza West should win the club BnF, maybe Tilly. It was a good year!
Did well in the AFLPA Captains award though too, so not just doing well according to the umpire recognition award.
What's our best 5 up front look like this year? It's some formation with Aine - Eardley - Hipwell - Gilroy - Bodey
We really only had 1 small forward (Bodey) and she also played higher up the ground, as did Gilroy.
You could probably add up the game time of Fellows/Locke/McLaughlin/Stratton...
Thanks for the info of Kashy. Most of those on expiring deals seem straightforward. Agree about Kempy and Stephenson. With Eardley a forward, really only 7 defenders on the list which is quite interesting to think about given 2 of them started last season ('23) in our midfield! Probably means...
Yeah, but she spent her first 2 years as a key back learning on all the top opponents. It's not as easy as going forward imo, but she did OK there given the shift so be interesting how they solve that.
Our defense did work well this year, far exceeded expectations but height was always an issue...
I'm still baffled about where you see Baskaran can play and I like her! I thought you watched the games. Yes TLR and Smith are converted mids too, but she'd be a terrible fit down there and doesnt play anything like either of them. Already mentioned Fwds and Mids. Maybe you're suggesting she...
You're making stuff up. Who across the season was playing so badly in the Hawks midfield that the solution needed was Baskaran?
Young talent who didnt fit in a good midfield (Fleming started on the bench!), and even on the wing there's the experience of Ashmore/Sheriff with Williamson doing her...
If you can't kelick straight when you have the opportunity you allow teams the chance to come back and wow did Port take that. Grats, Port, good luck next week.
Test for Hawthorn this off-season picking themselves up after kicking themselves out of two finals and GWS-ing it.
Sick of this type of chat. The ups aren't great but they weren't the ones that switched off after 3QT, they weren't the ones who kicked so inaccurately all game. There are 21 players out there, they have to cop that and can't learn from this (both games) by ignoring it and blame the umps.

What is it with us choking against Port!
I'm so gutted, they played so well but couldn't convert their chances. This feels like worst way to bow out too.
Well at least that's the game to build this rivalry on. And plenty to underline and work on next pre-season.
Just one or two of those chances converted and would feel a lot better about this lead.
Well Bodey does it finally. Hopefully that's enough in last quarter, Port will have to double their score just to draw level.
Got to take chances, two weeks in a row having problems is a concern. Especially strange after how good across season they were. Fleming player of the match so far, and our finals campaign imo.
