Finlayson, M.Kennedy, Setterfield and Zac Williams were all GWS academy players who requested trades interstate. The academy system isn’t a solution to player retention issues.
He’ll be 33 when this contract expires. He’s at his peak now and he’s not going to sustain his current form for 7 more years. You’ll be paying him way more than what he’s worth. He had no interested in moving back to Adelaide, he just played the pies into giving him a monster contract.
Schoenberg has major upside and is going to be a Star! I also love the way McPherson has come into the team and looked like a polished AFL player from the word go. Really strong in one on one contests and looks comfortable enough with ball in hand.
Maybe the ones they want aren’t available when they start? Why take the best of what’s available and get stuck with them when you can wait until the right person becomes available?
But yes, they should definitely choose all of their assistants.
Normally you’d say no chance the dogs trade away their 1st rounder for 20 and 30, however, that would give them a significant point gain which they’ll need if a bid comes in for JUH at 1. If we ended up with 4 picks inside 15 + academy players I’ll be stoked.
All depends on where the bids come...
What I’d like to see.
Out: Doedee, B Crouch, Himmelberg, Mackay.
In: Butts, Schoenberg, Fogarty, Sholl.
What we will see.
Out: Doedee, B Crouch.
In: Kelly, Gibbs.
M Crouch to get off with a fine.
I certainly hope so. It’s looking like the season should go the distance and the AFLPA will aggressively fight any changes to list size so you might be right. However, the AFL hierarchy are incredibly arrogant and seem to do whatever they want irrespective of where the clubs sit.
This is potentially going to be the toughest off season for list management ever. With the likelihood of list sizes being cut and salary cap being reduced, clubs are going to be forced to get rid of players they would have liked to keep (both contracted and out of contract).
We’re in a better...
Interesting to note that Crouch only played 71% of the game last week (Lowest in the team). In a game of shortened quarters, that suggests he’s really not fit. Suggests to me him getting dropped is more of a fitness thing than a discipline thing.
Obvious ones are Jones and Fogarty but I reckon we’ll see a huge improvement from Lachie Murphy. Can see him working hard on having more of an impact on the scoreboard.
Both Crocker and Keays were stuck behind some talented players at their respective clubs. Absolutely worth the risk as rookie picks to see if they thrive with more opportunity.
I think we’re in for a pretty entertaining night tomorrow. Watching Hamish speaking with Cal Tomey today and he talks about how he initially thought the top 16 or so picks wouldn’t change much but that had changed over the last couple of days. He said we’ve got a number of different scenarios...
I’ve heard him say himself on a podcast that he’s met with the Crows 3 times and was going to meet with them again at the draft combine, also that he was hopeful that the crows picked him up.
He’s exactly the type of player we’re lacking. An elite runner and has done some pretty special things in the SANFL. A couple of years in the gym and he will be a star. I reckon there’s every chance we take him at 4.
I’ve worked in organisations where assistant managers and managers give conflicting messages and the communication breakdown absolutely destroys the place.
What does having an assistant offer and is it really worth having one? Or is it just another voice/opinion for the rest of the coaching...
I agree. I can’t think of any other club that has much to offer GWS in the way of a future pick AND later picks this year. All the clubs loaded up with later picks with considerable point value this year need them for their own academy players.
I guess they’re still experimenting with the format of the draft now that live trading has come in. It’s probably modelled on the NFL draft which goes over 3 nights.
Teams didn’t go overboard with live trading last year because it was still a bit of an unknown. Expect to see a lot more live...
Clubs will also probably prefer to wait until draft night. If the option is there to wait and see if a certain player is available before committing to a pick swap then they’ll take that option.
