Of course he could play bulk afl in 2025 - he’s on the list. But is it highly likely? Probably not - our midfield and forward line are in good shape - but that’s fine as a first year draftee and keen to see how he goes at box hill. Unclear if he’s a mid or really a pressure forward at afl level.
Forward line functioned pretty well without him. Intriguing to see how we go with Lewis fit and back in the mix and how roles are shifted around.
Lewis has a bit of work to do on his ground level pressure and follow up - Dear has set the standard (and Chol raised his game as well).
Think it’s pretty simple.
We either trade up 33 for an earlier pick (with futures) or sit tight and use 33.
Match a bid on Cody (ideally late so no deficit). Possibly a bid goes a lot earlier then we like and we pass - then we may try to trade up (if have anything left).
Re-rookie Gunston.
If weddle is moving to wing CJ is going to have his work cut out for a best 22 spot when he’s fit. When he played did a good job of running patterns and disrupting opposition but didn’t get much of ball.
His ability to play back also less valuable now given our stacked backline. Can he provide...
Who’s weddle pushing off the wing? Assume Massimo locked in on one side. So CJ when fit? Morrison (who’s been depth) or a mid (as we’ve often also rotated mids through the other wing)?
Thanks for all the work Davo-27.
Which guys project as being elite in their positions? Ie who is the best small defender or flanker, wing type etc, or kpd?
(Apologies in advance if have answered already)
Expect we’ll try to generate a few more picks - it’s supposedly a good and deep draft and MM has a good record with later picks. We’re impatient and will try to be aggressive to acquire talent (which may mean we take risks with depth).
In terms of possible movements:
DGB not worth anything...
After yesterday there’s a spot. He’s a competitor, strong and huge tank. Played well in finals. Does the hard stuff and self-less roles which would free up Sydney’s outside types. Has rounded out his game and is more than a tagger.
Hawks would clearly like to keep him.
He’s really slow. Doesn’t get much outside ball and gets burned on transition by good mids even at vfl level. Doesn’t suit our running game at all as well. Has talent - just needs a big preseason to find a yard and build a tank.
Yep it’s a good stat. Sydney don’t play the mcg well but hardly got a chance to adapt. Brisbane got a trial run vs cats to adapt game style. It’s the curse of the non-vic teams - rack up wins during season then exposed at MCG when it matters.
Richmond could have one of the most stacked draft hands ever seen - already have the best hand yet lots of guys to be traded out. Given depth of draft prob not as much value in packaging up picks to move up - just load up - but likely still deal to be down with clubs that need points. Assuming...
Any players from the eagles that we may want them to throw in to the Barrass deal coming back?
Eg Coby burgiel is from Gippsland and went pick 29 two years ago hasn’t done much due to injury. But had express pace and good skills as a junior.
Ramma at this stage is stuck between two positions. He’s not big enough for ruck at afl given change in ruck rules favors huge units like Meek (Ramma was likely more an English type who can run all day - but rules worked against this type).
Up forward he’s just not mobile enough to be a kpf at...
More the point being a full time tall forward is hard enough. Being a part time forward / swingman is even harder. Maybe Sicily is good enough to do it - but very very few can.
Pretty sure he’s contracted so will get 12 months to prove himself.
I struggle to see him getting past our large group of small hffs - Bennetts also ahead of him.
I’d like to see him tried down back in a small defender role. Josh Morris for example looked far more assured down back (but had...
We played with frost, weddle, scrim and Sicily for most of season. Something has to change with barrass and battle coming in - yet all 6 best position is in backline (plus Blanck, serong and McCabe in reserve).
Am sure the coaches have a plan (as would have had to sell it to Barrass/battle) -...
Imagine Barrass takes up our first pick and more. And we want likely want to trade back into top 25 given talls around - our F1 likely used (but will be devalued given our finals run).
Doesn’t leave much left - our pick 30 may be gone as well (or downgraded) in Barrass trade and Harry m won’t...
Really good game by Finn. He had to really earn his spot in the 22 this year but it’s made him a better player. He works his guts out, is hard and tough and skills improved. Seemed to be moved all over the park - down back at times, then forward, combined with lots of hard running to create space.
Some tougher calls this year. A few guys are contracted (eg BMac to 2026) who otherwise would be at risk and were already over on list spots due to Phillips and scaife before needing space to add battle and barrass.
It’s apparently a deep draft so we’ll also want to take some picks to draft...
Hard to see him not at least considering a move to get more opportunity, given he’s even further down pecking order with battle and barrass. Could be the steak knives in a barrass trade.
Tassie games are generally lower scoring. Clarko one of few opposition coaches who will know the ground well.
I expect they’ll try to make it as low scoring slog as possible and get their mids to take advantage of no Day. Roos position on ladder can’t change unless tigers beat suns...
Would we have a look at someone like Joel Jeffrey? Also dropped from suns side by Hardwick. Has heaps of talent and can play forward (3rd tall) and back more recently so has flexibility that Sam likes (although hard to fit him in our backline). Needs a few extra kgs but put him on the Gunston /...
He’s a 3rd year mid who’s on fringes of a side that has had barely any injuries (outside the first 5 weeks), one of best performed league for last few months and has a very settled ‘big 4’ core midfield group that is performing very well and complements each other well.
If we had a more...
Carlton’s small forwards aren’t completely horrible. A few are more pressure than skill but are quick, but hollands, Martin, Williams (if fit) can kick goals. Risk we go too focused on the talls.
