Last season, Geelong had 1 player in the top 80 Earners in the league, Jeremy Cameron.
2 others, Dangerfield and Stewart also made the top 100.
Geelong just spread their salary cap much more evenly between all players.
Its also the reason we have had to trade for Dangerfield and Cameron...
By RD 13 2023, Smith was probably the 2nd best midfielder selected from the 2018 draft (behind Sam Walsh)
That draft contained -
1 - Walsh
5 - Rozee
7 - Smith
8 - T Thomas
9 - C Jones
11 - Caldwell
12 - Butters
14 - Hately
16 - McHenry
17 - Sturt
18 - Duursma
The second half of that season...
Yep, both were good, and in general are very handy players. However, the upside to O'Sullivan and Clark is greater and it would be better for the team to see them surpass those others by the end of the season 2025.
My 23, is what I 'hope' the team looks like by the end of the season, with players playing to potential.
B - Guthrie Henry O'Sullivan
HB - Humphries DeKoning Stewart
C - Demspey Smith Holmes
HF - Miers Cameron Mannah
F - Stengle Neale Henry
Foll - Conway Bruhn Clark
Int - Blitz Danger Close...
Simply put, ALL AFL players want Premierships.
Geelong can sell them that dream for less money than pretty much every other team in the competition.
The club refuses to pay overs and wont sign ridiculously long contracts for players, 5 years seems to the the longest.
To get success, you...
Who do we have?
Conway - REALLY hope he can get fit. Huge injury concerns
Edwards - Looked good for the 5 minutes he played in the 2's - Injury concerns
Stanley - Cooked, there simply for backup now. Injuries also catching up with him
Furphy (rookie) - IMO, did nothing to impress in the 2's...
But to be fair, at the time I did think we were winning the flag, and thus, out RD1 and 2 picks were down a few extra places..
I'm still wrong and know nohting, but with a little more context..
PS - Great negotiating work Macks..
Minus the ACL, you could use most of those words to describe Dangerfield early on, even now still..
Defensively, still not the greatest.
Disposal, still very hit and miss.
Goalkicking, well below average.
But the upside is absolute line-breaking, match turning ability... Yeah, I'd take that.
Geelong really dont have many players that we would consider trading out.
Knevitt maybe, if there were interested parties. I think if there were, we would have heard about them..
O'Connor, would be a possibility. I can see him having heavy competition for spots next season.
and only if there...
We need Clayton Oliver to come to the Cats so our fans have a new banner to display -
OLI (Dempsey)
OLI (Henry)
OLI (Clayton Oliver)
OI
OI
OI
It could possibly still work if Oli Wiltshire improves a LOT.
His contract expires this year, I suppose that means the end of the year, not just the end of the season? He is still listed, but not contracted.
He is NOT a free agent, to be a free agent must be out of contract, AND have been at their club for 8 seasons.
Also, free agents can still be traded...
I watched a bit of Jeka in the 2's, some of his decision making with ball in hand was truly awful. He was constantly taking super high risk kicks across goals and more often than not, turning it directly over to the opposition for easy shots at goal.
Was a decent mark, and could find the...
Who in their right mind would pay $900k for Perryman?
A handy flanker at best. Not a key position, not a gun mid, not a match winner, not a line breaker, just a decent honest footballer..
Not worth anywhere near that money..
With Gary Rohan delisted, we need to replace our redhead.
Previous redheads -
Cameron Ling
Tim McGrath
Barry Stoneham
Neville Bruns
Darren Forssman
Damien Bourke
Tim Bourke
Marc Woolnough
I think Oliver would fit right into the space..
We are still lacking some 'nude nuts' though, they have...
I believe we 100% have the ruckman we need in Toby Conway.
Really hope he can overcome his injury concerns and bulk up a little as he has the attributes of a top 5 league ruckman for sure.
Height at 206cm, is right up there with the tallest rucks.
Can find the footy around the ground and in...
Smith is good to go for a full pre-season, which is awesome for Geelong. Barring new injury (hammy's are common after reco's) he should be absolutely cherry ripe for Round 1.
A change of scenery and a fresh start can do wonders for the mentality of players also. Fingers crossed.
I really hope...
Just look at our B&F top 10
1st - Max Holmes (164 votes) - Just signed his first good 5 year contract
2nd - Zach Guthrie (120) - Would be on average contract
3rd - Jeremy Cameron (118) - Reported $8-900k
4th - Tom Stewart (117) - Signed a 3 year extension in 2023 - probably $700k
5th - Tyson...
A fit and happy Clayton Oliver is EXACTLY what Geelong needs.
He is the type of midfielder we have been missing for a while, a pure clearance player with amazing vision and creative hands.

But at least they will be able to find the footy... The likes of Atkins, Bruhn, Bowes etc cant find the footy, and cant stop the opposition from finding the footy either..
Overall, a really successful season.. Possibly overachieved with our list..
Some real finds with our youth, Dempsey, Humphries, Neale, Mannagh (not young).
Still a lot of work to do in the middle of the ground, and HOW we actually use those in the middle (actually give them game time! Bruhn...
