I finally secured a ticket. The barcode didn't work with my first few attempts, and, as a result, was booted back to the queue a few times. On my final attempt, I managed to get a ticket. Level 2 was sold out, but level 1 is better than nothing.

I got a similar message on Facebook once from a friend in Bali. Thankfully, I'm naturally suspicious person, so I didn't send anything. As expected, it turned out to be a scam. At the end of the day, if a person needs help, they'll seek out family and close friends, not someone they barely know.

Why should he be immune from criticism? Certainly, from the outside at least, its hard to judge how effective he is in his role. Personally, I'd rather take an agnostic view of his performance, at this stage.
