So out of curiosity, can I ask you guys your opinions of the sport ?
I am myself quite a fan of AFL but there are some things I dislike, some things I really like.
Same with gaelic football, some things I like, some things I dislike.
I'd be very interested in getting the Aussie Rules...
Well that would mean you'd be here for the weekend of the 16th (sunday) ?
This should be a fantastic game. Not gaelic football though, sorry.
Páirc an Chrócaigh is Croke Park in Dublin. Its very easy to get to. Just ask anyone, its near the City center. (walking distance)
Hurling ->...
Hey all,
I don't know if anyones interested in this, but just in case, here is a link to watch a gaelic football match last monday between Dublin and Kerry.
Its an important game and Kennelly is playing for Kerry.
Heres the first part.

I thought and still do think he was inferring the rules were seriously unfairly balanced in our favour but until he states otherwise I'll take your word for it that he only believes its looks.
I'm a white guy living and working in Asia. As far as a lot of Asians think, All white people have...
And there are people who think it is a modified game of Aussie Rules.
Look at the 11th post in this thread http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=512555&highlight=gaelic
The rules are split evenly.
If you believe they are not then here is a list of the rules...
I don't understand what point your trying to make ?
Some Irish people are not part of the GAA culture. Some choose soccer and rugby simply because they are good at them and can make a living doing it.
What do you mean here ?
If we had GAA tackling and GAA movement rules then we could quite easily get the ball off you.
You said reverse the tackling rules and the ball rules.
If the Aussies had to play with our tackling and our movement they would find it near impossible to get and keep...
As I've never been to Oz when its on I can only talk about my opinion from the board here when comparing how serious we take it to how serious you take it but I'd tend to think its more or less equal.
Obviously as a very small country with a very small population almost any sport we enter will...
If you took out the tackle then how would the Aussies get the ball genius ?
I suggest you watch a game of gaelic football before you talk such rubbish.
Learning to tackle in AR is one thing, it takes skill, physique, timing etc. But to tackle gaelic football style would be just...
I'm really sick of listening to people who talk like this and haven't even looked at the rules.
I posted at the beginning of this thread, the rules for both sports. Aussie Rules and Gaelif Football and I asked people to put their own version of the rules in which were a 50/50 compromise in the...
Yes but you score by having possession and moving it down the field :)
You can't score without possession and tactics.
The tackling has been dumbed down but you need to realise that even though its physically dumbed down. Its almost the same in the way it changes the tactics.
Irish...
You tell me when it starts so I'll tell you too.
Unless you have a 2000 page study conducted by Roy Keane on the fitness of footballers vs Hurlers and personally endorsed by Donal Og Cusack then you might as well give up even trying to argue that point with rebelcounty. :)
I hope your not on Donal's side in the yearly strike threat. If Donal Og or his 'supporters' whomever they may be were half as good as McCarthy was when he played then ye wouldn't be so far behind the cats.
Hey hoops.
So your the only Aussie to answer the original question, thanks.
I just left in what would be the changes to the current setup.
I like the idea of 20 minute quarters, It should never have changed to 18, something I don't understand. What is time on ?
I don't like the must...
The two biggest concessions are the ball shape and the tackling.
Both of them completely change the way the way is played.
For the Aussies it makes it difficult to score/pass especially with the foot.
For the Irish it completely changes the tactics of the actual play. i.e > The Aussies can...
I don't think you realise just how different gaelic is :)
The AFL players might win but its certainly not a forgone conclusion.
In gaelic you have to solo (kick the ball) to yourself and you can't tackle.
The Irish would be useless with the oval ball but the Aussies would find it extremely...
Mods please don't add this to the official thread, its a seperate discussion/topic.
People on both sides, Irish and Australian seem to think the rules are unfair on them, biased towards the other side.
Some Irish people think that IR is just Aussie rules with a round ball while some...
In defence, many people don't know whats legal or what the game is like in Aussie Rules.
I'm sure any of us who do watch Aussie Rules and know what the game involves wouldn't believe such rubbish.
When foreigners see a game of hurling for example, they often think that its really dangerous...
You obviously don't know anything about gaelic football then.
IR is played very like Aussie rules, except with a round ball and dumbed down physicality.
Its NOTHING like gaelic football.
Thats not a rule for us or from gaelic football. It was the AFL that asked for this rule. I forget his...
