I've seen him chase. He's slow to position himself defensively when he does, and slow to react when he needs to chase, but it's not like he never does it. He's just ineffective because he's so wired to front run and receive. He is what he is now. I doubt we ever change him.
...and aren't Port fans stoked with that, because despite his height, Zerk is more suited to being the 3rd tall.
Dodoro drafted Zerk in '17, and Brand and Eyre in '18. Hooksy retired in '21 and Hurley in '22. In that time Zerk hadn't filled out. He brings in Brand and Eyre late, themselves...
Zerk got thrown a key back role when Rats was forced to go forward.
What Sanderson says is irrelevant to Dodoro's grand vision.
Even if Zerk was our 'smaller kpd', who was our anchor? It clearly wasn't envisioned as Francis. Surely not Ridley.
Hurley had the capacity to be that guy. He stood...
He was a key back as a junior but hadn't been able to fill out his frame in the seniors, which is one of the reasons I suspect we were happy to let him go. Everyone flinched waiting for Zerk to get crunched every week. Is he playing key back at Port? When he arrived he was going to be behind...
"We have injected more money into our list management recruitment team and will continue to support this critical area which is now lead by Matt Rosa. We now have a detailed list management strategy, to guide us so that the decision making is strategic and well planned..."
In other words, prior...
The implication drawn from Barham's speech on B&F night is that he started that without a strategy.
That much is clear when you consider there was nothing in place to cover the retirements of Hurley and Hooker.
I wouldn't be unhappy with all three going if we don't think they're improving us. I'm not confident Draper gets us much in the way of compo.
Another thing might be whether or how the AFL responds to agitation over the compo system. A lot of crankiness about it this year.
So that bottom line is that those players who are gone have had enough time on the list to show us their ceiling. With them, we proved middling at best.
We have young players who might be better, might not. But we have to play them to find out.
Yes, we may go backwards, but that's how it...
I honestly don't think Reid makes it. I reckon he sustains another injury, we delist and Hayes is the key back.
If we trade back in for 10 or 11, it may be we're angling for a tall Shanahan/Armstrong/Tauru.
Martin sweeping as well where necessary if he's in the backline again, but yeah I agree re Heppell. We really need Ridley on the park again now, and even Redman to rediscover those directorial and lead-by-example qualities he'd demonstrated in '23.
High press is fine in conjunction with demand...
I don't have any issue re playing a high press, just when we insisted on pressing too far up and got stung. Against Sydney comes to mind, and I think Freo and Adelaide as well, which we were lucky to win.
Re the sweeper role, hopefully that is solved by Hayes. I'm just not confident in what I...
I would have thought Gia must be doing something right, for Caldwell and Durham to have developed as well as they have. As well, I was under the impression that our stoppage numbers had improved (?), so I would have thought Stanton okay on that basis.
Roberts I'd agree with. Forwardline has...
Not sure how Jacobs remains. I know we've had trouble with injuries down back but the defence looked awful at times, especially pressing too high up and getting caught in transition too often.
As well, we have a number 1 draft pick small defender who is underachieving and consistently bites...
Trade week is done.
If we draft a key tall, they're not a walk-up start.
Baldwin and Hayes are not that guy.
I don't think we have any choice but to believe.
There is the SSP I suppose.
I reckon you'll find that Scott and Rosa have the mandate to do this.
Those multiple best 22 players had us making up the numbers in this comp.
No one came for any of them, bar Stringer. For pick 53.
Their mediocrity = our continued mediocrity. Scott has spent considerable time learning about...
Agree with Owen. Dodoro had a habit of bringing in players that perpetuated middling but had us excited about winning trade week. A few good wins here and there and he was able to be exonnerated, but ultimately we've kept players for too long because they became seen as 'loyal servants.'
Rosa's...
Pyke's language is interesting, talking about honouring WC's commitment to Baker.
The subtext seems to position Barrass to ask himself why Hawthorn hasn't done the same for him. In other words, that WC values you Tom, where Hawks don't actually care.
