My favorite player ever, and arguably the most physically gifted person ever to play AFL (with a nod to Ablett senior). He was just so exciting to watch, and in his prime he was doing things every week that made me shake my head in disbelief. Watching him play when he was on fire was as good...
This was arguably his best game. Almost every one of his 8 goals was incredible. He was on a level that very few others have ever played, on that night.
I wrote this in another thread, but it applies here too...
I've watched the Hawks win at the G four times in the last 35 years and they were four absolutely incredible experiences. I love the MCG, it's like a modern day Coloseum. The size, the sheer number of people, the walk along the Yarra on...

11 from 15, so averaging so one every 3.8 years on average (I'm 42). That average is embarrassing compared to my son though, who is averaging a flag every 2.6 years of his life (4 in 10.4 years).
I've literally never complained about the umps, but my wife (not supporting either team) asked whether the umps are being paid off by the AFL to favor the Swans.
Gunston has kicked more Grand Final goals than any other current player (including Buddy and Roughy who have both played more GFs than him). And he's kicked more GF goals than anyone else who has played this century. He is a superstar.
He's not going to another club.
I'm just hoping he comes back for one last finals series in 2 weeks. Not sure if he is still a contracted player or whether retirement ends the existing contract, but it would be awesome if he played this finals series.
Absolutely. Gunston has kicked more goals in grand finals than any other current player (despite playing in less GFs that Buddy and Roughy), and more than anyone this century. He and Bruest are outright superstars that have been in the shadows of Hodge, Mitchell, Rioli and Buddy until now.
Exactly. Footy is just a form of entertainment at the end of the day. Whilst winning is one expression of good entertainment, Cyril's ridiculous moves were a major reason I watched every game. The excitement from seeing him do something that no other player could do, was, to me, one of the...
My favorite player ever, and a reason to never miss watching a game, as I didn't want to miss one of the freakish things that he generally did a couple of times a game. Thanks for happening, Cyril!
This is genuinely the best thread I think I've ever read on the main board. So much truth, honesty, openness and empathy. Imagine how much better BF would be if all threads were this respectful and genuine.
This thread would deliver a much more balanced conversation in 10 years time, when there is more objectivity and less fresh emotion. My personal view is that the cold light of history will see them as equal. 3 flags is 3 flags.
Haha, yep Ablett is better surprisingly enough! But I must say that Cyril (along with Buddy) is my favorite player to watch these days. Just so exciting and unique - a bit like Ablett was back in the day.
Haha! My old man is a Cats fan, so I grew up watching many Cats games. Ablett Snr is the best player I've ever seen. But you guys have had so many champion players from the 80's right through until now, like Mansfield, Brownless, Couchy, Scarlett, Ablett Jnr, Johnson, Enright, Taylor, Selwood...
Not sure where to post this but the 5 people in my family are on the Cats for the next two weeks. Your club is great, our rivalry with you is incomparable, and I'll be hoping you guys win the next two games. All the best.

Like all of us, I’m feeling disappointed right now. But there are plenty of other threads for dwelling on what went wrong etc. This thread is to acknowledge and appreciate the incredible journey that this club has taken us on over the last 3 years, but more importantly, over each of our entire...
There is no disaster scenario for Hawthorn. We've just won 3 flags in 3 years. This year would just be the cream on the cream on the cream on the cake.
