The Bounce is Dead - An Umpires Perspective

Maybe 140. Then we brought in rules/interpretations that stop ruckmen taking the ball out of the ruck, coming off anything other than a 5 metre run up at the centre bounce, using their body to defend their position to win the tap that they've worked to get before their opponent, banned jumping...

    Merged: Maxwell and that bump

Re: Rules question following Maxwell decision? Looks like they've gone to the dictionary and rulebook again. One day Gilligan will pick up on this pattern and get the terminology right and not have these booklets contradicting the rules.

Umpires for the 2008 Grand Final are

Missing all clears in the elimination probably. I was expecting Rosebury, Kennedy, McLaren, Vozzo (emerg). Ryan's forced his way in with his finals performance, I guess they were never going to pick 2 <200 gamers so Rosebury misses out. Not sure how Vozzo gets anywhere near Kennedy's spot...

    Week 2 Finals Umpires

Only 6 errors for the year and 3 of them are doing semis?

    Week 2 Finals Umpires

Kennedy did that game. Looks like the top 6 will do semis and prelims this year

    My Opinon for next week

Didn't see much of today's game so I'm guessing usual sorts of games for those fieldies and nothing out of the ordinary for the others. Field Ryan, Rosebury, McInerney, McBurney, Vozzo, James Emergencies/Prelim: McLaren, Kennedy Gone: Meredith, Stevic, Chamberlain, Donlon Goal Nastasi, Walker...

One sided umpiring at AMII Stadium Today

Think it was the fieldy asking the goalie, not the other way around. Wilson walked straight to the spot they stand when they're going to signal a poster. Have to assume he heard it, not saw it from there. Like cricket, you can't always see a deflection on a thin snick like that. More concerned...

He has now :( Should be the end of his season, the other two were good :thumbsu:

    Round 22 Appointments

I don't know why Jeffery wouldn't be in but that's how I interpret it too. Jeffery, Schmitt, Nicholls and Margetts the emergencies (in that order if any injuries)

At least I saw something I hadn't seen before at the Port Adelaidse v Melbourne game

It was unusual, but I think by the time his foot made contact with the ball the other was in the square. Certainly not out enough for the field umpire to be see from his position, although there's been a lot of those 'lapses in concentration' for kick outs at that end in the last couple of weeks

    Umpires for Round 18?

Why wouldn't he umpire in Queensland? Boundary and goal umpires do travel occasionally these days.

Goal umpire going to get the a*se

I don't know if you can really call holding your hands out and taking half a step forward 'attempts'. Field and goal umpire both have to be dropped For the point incident, if it was called touched, you can't say from the replays that the umpire was wrong on the back of the padding...

    Staging for free kicks

Agreed - 50 points will do it. Diving's all about fooling the umpire, it's too hard for them to work it out now, they're still going to pay free kicks that have been dived for, and the free kicks that go unpaid because the ump thinks they're diving would end up being a free kick the wrong way...

    Why?

When he actually thinks before he opens his mouth he'll stick up for the integrity of umpires when Cornesy comes up with something like this Not that I want to dismiss an idea that means we'll never get an SA umpire again and rarely get anyone but the WA guys ;)

    Razor Ray, The real Interview

And just like Matthew Lloyd and co were made to with goal kicking, the umpires who wait for the light, then cross to the other side of the circle where they want to bounce the ball from, wipe the ball, take a deep breath, yell out obvious rules which both ruckmen will ignore since nobody ever...

Play on when player is out of bounds

He's allowed to bring the ball back in as long as he doesn't change direction after the play on call
  20. R

    Rd 10 Umps

Agreed. The way the system is he had to be dropped, but that doesn't make the system right. I'm not sure his decision making is particularly good anyway but while Matt Nicholls is getting a game it couldn't be much worse

    Jarred Waite Decision

Obviously it's in the rule book, but if everything was done to the letter of the law we'd have 700 frees a game. The rule is there to stop time wasting - everybody knows that's not the reason Waite did it and it had no influence on the game. No doubt the ball was still back in the middle long...

AFL ROUND 5 UMPIRE APPOINTMENTS (3 Changes, Shane Stewart to DEBUT)

Too much brain usage probably, although it wasn't his greatest game last week

What would you do if you were in charge of the umpires department?

    1) Do not guess. If not 100% sure whether to pay a free kick or bounce, bounce. If not 100% sure whether to bounce or let them play, let them play. If not 100% sure that the ball completely crossed the line, it didn't. 2) Encourage umpires to forget the interpretations they've been taught in the...

Why are umpires allowed to talk in an arrogant tone towards players but not the other way around?

Re: Why are umpires allowed to talk in an arrogant tone towards players but not the other way around If he'd followed the zero tolerance rule (and probably last year's interpretation as well) it would've been 50. I thought Vozzo found a much better way to handle it.

Biggest WTF Moment of Season 2008 So Far...

Rosebury was very good throughout. Avon was ordinary, Donlon had an awful first half seemingly trying to break the record for free kicks, better after that.
