My issue with this is, on field and on tv from a distance, just like the last one, it will look like a red slab of nothingness on the front and really bland.

Yeah, thats the thing. If say you're sitting on top of a stadium, or watching on tv, the front of the jumper, you're only gonna see red, barely no logo in the middle. Its too blend in.
Could have had a gold/blue jumper with a red logo. Or something that it stands out.

I actually like the logo now I think, but it'll just blend into a sea of red.

Okay I'm on board now that is clean. Not super super in love with the logo but love where they wanted to go with it and looks a dramatic improvement overall with this just being my design snobbiness. Keen to see it irl.

If the logo is red on a background of red, they could have just used the old logo and had the same effect on field from a distance and on tv anyway.
