How do you think the AFL would go in a theoretical competition where each city only housed one club, and the top 18 cities by population had the teams.
The teams would be
1. Sydney Swans- SCG/ANZ/Skoda
2. Melbourne Demons- MCG/Etihad
3. Brisbane Bears- Gabba
4. Perth Eagles- Subiaco
5. Adelaide Crows- AO/AAMI
6. Gold Coast Suns- Metricon
7. Newcastle City- Newcastle Sportsground
8. Canberra Giants- Manuka
9. Wollongong Lions- North Dalton Park
10. Sunshine Coast Rays- Maroochydore multisports
11. Hobart Tigers- Bellerive Oval
12. Geelong Cats- Kardinia Park
13. Townsville City Lions- Tony Ireland Stadium
14. Cairns City- Cazalys
15. Toowoomba Bombers- Harristown park
16. Darwin Buffaloes- Marrara
17. Albury-Wodonga Hoppers- Lavington Sports Ground
18. Launceston Blues- Aurora

If this competition was to happen, what do you think would be the success and crowd figures for each team. Would Melbourne sell out the MCG every week, and would teams like Toowoomba struggle to hit 4 figures.

How the hell did you pick the stadiums?

Why wouldn't Albury play from Lavington or Townsville from Tony ireland?

Not to mention that Ballarat and Bendigo would have teams.
I picked the stadiums from a few google searches of local teams, some of them were probably wrong. I chose the top 18 cities by population, with Ballarat and Bendigo not making the cut.

You would pick th 18 biggest football cities not cities due to population.

Albury has about 55K. Bendigo has 94K.

Um... what?

As I should have stated clearer earlier, I knew it wouldn't work, I just wanted to know what the competition would be like if it was actually played.

Albury-Wodonga has over 100k. They form one metropolitan area with Wodonga in the Victorian side of the Murray and Albury on the NSW side.
And the Greater city of Bendigo has 140k.

It would depend on whether Australia was a AFL dominated country, or if it still had the 50/50 split with the NRL.

Good idea but, Tasmania wouldn't be able to hold 2 teams. Just hasn't got the population to do so.
North Queensland would probably only be allowed to hold the 1 team.
Darwin, population? 4,000 would be an achievement.
Wollongong, don't think it would have the support and North Dalton Park hasn't got the right landscape to build a big stadium, would rather a ground like Win Stadium but that is built for RL.

Toowoomba could not financially support a Statewide Rugby League team, so there's no hope of them financially supporting an AFL franchise. There already is a Townsville City Lions, they're on the bottom of the ladder in the Townsville comp.

and would teams like Toowoomba struggle to hit 4 figures.

I lived in Toowoomba for ten years and played in the Aussie Rules competition there. I reckon a team in Toowoomba would do well for a number of reasons.

1. The Aussie Rules competition there is probably the best in Queensland outside of Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

2. Unlike Townsville and Cairns which already have sporting teams in the NBL and NRL Toowoomba doesn't currently have a professional sports team so there would be no opposition.

3. Even though Toowoomba has just over 100,000 people it has a huge outlying area with towns like Warwick, Dalby and Kingaroy. It is only just over an hours drive from Brisbane and the Gold Coast so you would even have fans at the games from there, especially at the local derbies.
