The players who have their names drawn for kangalotto aren’t forced to have their heads shaved “Young Blood” style. They can opt to take the alternate route and pay a fine.
It must go. its shit culture. The fines are probably massive for a noob to pay, ultimately forcing someone to change their appearance is a shit go.

They’re not. Way to much is made of this. If anyone were to have the head shave done against their true wishes I imagine it would only be because they themselves feel peer pressured to do so. They aren’t held down at gun point though and it is player initiated and perpetuated.

I believe a psychological perspective would argue the contrary with conviction.

i think this is partly the issue

they shouldn't be put in that position

should change kanga lotto punishments to not affect physical appearance for more than 24 hours

Look, all I’ll say on this is that I find it very unlikely that a team who can’t string 4 quarters together, has the leadership qualities to devise and execute a ‘Kangalotto’ system which is multifaceted in terms of exit strategies, diverse fine options and accountability for policing it. I refuse. Nothing suggests Jy or Luke could oversee an operation like this.

Chuckled a bit. Is really great work!

Not many 18yos are going to speak up about some daft initiation a bunch of giggly entrenched senior players have come up with.

We're not trying to break their sense of individuality navy seal style. Most of these lads are inexperienced and insecure and if having a bit of vanity helps them, leave them alone.

Have chatted about this little custom to non footy friends who were shocked we did it and saw it as macho bullshit from another era.

Imagine the AFLW team doing Kangalotto to reluctant teenage girls! That's right, they wouldn't.

It's archaic and had it's day 25 years ago. **** it off.

Would be a top 10 pick if he knew how to kick.
Hopefully the club can fix that.
I think it’s up to the player to fix that……you wouldn’t be super confident they can fix his kick in when you look at the likes of Bailey, LDU, LMac and others who haven’t improved obvious flaws in the kicking. Even sounds like George is being encouraged to kick less going from one of the training reports.

Here we go again. Is there any evidence that any player has been upset by this tradition? Is there any evidence that players don't enjoy the bonding and comradery involved in the process?

Is there any evidence that the fines are massive or people are forced?

Is there any evidence that players have felt unable to speak up about it, or wanted to or that it's driven by giggly senior players?

Why does it have to be a labelled "macho" thing? Is there any evidence this is driven by testosterone or "toxic masculinity"

It really bothers me that people sitting at home smashing away at their keyboards have decided they don't like this and invented a plethora of imaginary scenarios where players have been or potentially could be coerced, forced, intimidated, felt peer group pressure in support of their own wish to end it.

You seem like a level headed bloke but that is absolute garbage, not to mention completely irrelevant.

It's ok to say you don't like it and everybody is entitled to their opinion, but lets not insert our own narrative or make shit up.

The day someone comes out and says they have been traumatised by the experience I will be the first to say it needs to stop.

I'm a bit meh on the whole concept, but it does feel like criticism of it around these parts has ramped up since the poster boy for sooks JHF had his little tanty about it a couple of years ago.
Not sure his response should be held up as a yardstick.
Decent buzz cut would actually be an improvement on some of the dos I see young blokes trotting out these days.
Most of the ones I know are happy to let their mates cut their hair

If a player who is wanting a professional career is traumatised by it then I wish them luck if they ever read about themselves on here.

Put another way, if you can’t cope with a haircut how are you going to cope with an ACL or with the pressures of high level sport.

The way you get through that pressure is by feeling the solidarity of a united and supportive team behind you. Exactly the thing that a hazing / initiation culture undermines.

Players who aren’t great kicks turn the ball over at a pretty consistent rate which eventually turns them into whipping boys ala Liam Anthony.
But this guys kicks are literally wild shanks that are chaos balls. Surely we can almost plan for that?
MagicalRoos, I think your being a bit harsh here, yes Luke's kicking can be better but a lot of his kicks aren't to bad, at the championships some of his passes were good while some others were long bombs {ever watched Clayton Oliver play, some good passes, but other times bursts from the middle and bombs it and he's not a bad player is he?}

That's just one example and there are others, I think you have to remember he's 18 years old and all draftees have something they have to work on but his kicking is being made out to be "so bad" and that's making a mountain out of a molehill. I love players with great foot skills that's why I really liked Xavier Lindsay {now what club do you think picked him up?} Joe Berry to Port, great foot skills and Harry Oliver very good as well to GWS.
