Re: 14. Sam Lonergan

You would.

No, he has been alright.

Enough for round 1, though? Still doesn't find enough of the ball.
Borderline.
He's impressed me though.

It's a lot harder to fit him into a 22 than a 26 or 28 man squad.

A solid, uninterrupted season from all our midfield hopes - Howlett, Jetta, Melksham & so on - makes it a lot harder for him, I don't think they'll all stand up to that though, so we might need that covering midfielder for a year yet.

Re: 14. Sam Lonergan

Looked better than howlett in the middle against pies so i dont see howlett taking his spot as an inside mid. lonergan is tougher than howlett and has greater impacts at clearances, id rather see howlett with an outside role which suits him better imo.

Lonergan he had 16 touches with 15 contested against pies:eek:, he is tough as nails and always makes an impact at a ground contest. He should play round 1, his pre-season form has been very good.

Re: 14. Sam Lonergan

I agree he had a better game than Howlett against the pies, but I think Howlett has had the better pre-season than Lonergan and will probably get the nod.

Lonergan is a good contested player, but he isn't really seen anywhere else. Until he adds that other side to his game I think he will only be a depth midfielder for that contested role behind Watson, Hocking and Howlett.

The strength of the forehead.

Re: 14. Sam Lonergan

Been really impressed with Sammy this year. His clearance ability and very good in and under. Likes the hard stuff, not afraid to tackle and also a good kick. Think he deserves some more time in the middle as he can fly under the radar and wins a lot of the footy.

Re: 14. Sam Lonergan

I reckon he played one of his best games for the club on the weekend.... another player who is thriving under Hirdy and knows exactly what his role is in the team!

This form change from Sammy may spell the end of Prismall's career in the red and black come years end......

Re: 14. Sam Lonergan

haven't heard about Lonergan for such a long time.

can someone give me an update of how he's going this preseason?

with the recruitment of all these midfielders in the last couple of years, feel he is going to get left behind and fade away.. which is sad because about 4-5 years ago people were saying he could be our next A-grader?
what is going on with this bloke and why has he slipped so badly?
what can we expect from him this year?

Re: 14. Sam Lonergan

I don't think many people would have predicted he would become elite, never had the tools to be elite. For me he does his job well, which is to go on and help Jobe and Hocking win some clearances, go off. But to me he is just warming the seat until a more rounded player can come in and push him out, ie. if we got Caddy. To me he is outside our current best side anyway with inside mids Watson, Hocking and Howlett all ahead of him and also with the development of the inside game of guys like Melksham and Zaharakis. No idea about his preseason sorry.

Re: 14. Sam Lonergan

There was a thread/poll years ago, which had the majority seeing Longergan as our next "a grade mid", and our best young player.

Then he stagnated under Knights.

2011 was decent, but his kicking is still terrible. He can win a contested ball, but then he just throws it onto the boot and hopes for the best. It's amateur stuff, and the sooner the likes of Heppell, Melksham and co. can permanantly keep him out of the side, the better we'll be.

Re: 14. Sam Lonergan

IIRC before he hurt his knee he was starting to rack up the kind of disposal counts that had eluded him before.

He doesn't have the poise or speed to cause a lot of damage with his clearances but he's still our second best overall clearance player behind the captain IMO and that's worth being in or very close to our best 22 most weeks. He simply makes it harder for the opposition in the most important part of the ground and that is the kind of player you need to win finals.

Re: #14: Sam Lonergan - How heavy is that head?

Disappointing that they didn't measure it on AFL Teams last year. But then it's more the... length of it rather than the circumference.

Err... yes.
