Player Profile
(essendonfc.com.au)

Tayte Pears managed to break into the senior side five times in 2008 – his first AFL season. An outstanding contributor at Bendigo for the majority of the year, Pears has the height, size and speed to be a key AFL backman of the future. At only 18 years of age, the experience of 2008 has helped his development and he will be a far more confident player this year. A hip injury has held him back during preseason but Pears is likely to play plenty of senior games in 2009. Could become a star.

Player Profile (Pawtucket Patriot)

Although Tayte only played 5 games last year, he showed much promise. He reads the play very well and consequently is able to position himself perfectly in order to spoil or mark the ball. He is very calm under pressure and is a great kick and handball. He is quick for a player of his size. Although he may be able to develop into a key defender, he is more likely to take the third best forward and play more of a rebounding role. He is of a similar stature to Sean Wellman and has the ability to become as good a player as Sean. Figures as a very important part of the Bombers' backline for years to come.

Tayte Pears returns to senior football

It may have been a low key return to senior football but the sight of key position prospect, Tayte Pears, playing for the Bendigo Bombers in Monday's bushfire appeal game was significant none-the-less.
Coach Adrian Hickmott said the 18-year-old (who turns 19 in two weeks) was solid in the side's victory against a Bendigo All-Stars team.
"After missing so much football he's come back very well," Hickmott said.
"He played about 60 minutes of footy at centre half back and his composure, skill, speed and knowledge of our game style was up to the standard required.
"Tayte didn't play much of the last quarter but his fitness was good and he is a strong-willed young man who works hard for the team and only ever thinks about the team."
Since being taken by Essendon in the 2007 draft with pick No.23 the West Australian has played five games and kicked two goals.
His 2008 season and 2009 pre-season have been hampered by a hip injury which required surgery.
Standing at 191cm and weighing 91kg he is expected to develop into a modern day agile key position backman.
"I think that's his best position," Hickmott said.
"This year the senior team will have a mix of guys key backs like Dustin Fletcher and young Michael Hurley so Tayte will fit in well. He is very disciplined to do his role and I think his future is in the backline.
"He is very strong in his defensive actions. His spoiling and chasing is good and he was able to create options coming out of the back line which was great.
"It was good to see him work so well with Cale Hooker and Tyson Slattery in defence and he cut off plenty of ball which stopped it going into their forward 50m."

Really hoping we can get a good look at him in the early weeks of the season proper.

Re: 16.Tayte Pears

Any comments on his game today??

For me, I thought he found the footy really well and linked up well also.. Did not look outclassed by any of his opponents.. Just a couple of poor decisions disposal wise that cost us... overall not a bad game for a late inclusion

I thought he was decent.

A couple of bad turnovers by foot really hurt us, but other than that he was alright.

Re: 16.Tayte Pears

Getting better but needs to work a bit on his disposal by foot.

One thing I really like about this kid is that he seems to have a bit of a mongrel/aggro streak in him, something that our side is kind of lacking in at the moment IMO. Watching the replay of the Carlton game last night there was one instance where there was a bit of push & shove and trash talk going on and Tayte dished it right back up to them :thumbsu:

Re: 16.Tayte Pears

We're very lucky to have Pears. I've watched him closely at the 4 games I've been to this year and have really been impressed with his pace, athleticism and particularly his ability to spoil. A lot of defenders tend to watch their opponent, but Pears watches the ball and his closing speed and skill to put his fist into the right spot to spoil is second to none. Strong, too.

Re: 16.Tayte Pears

And he's passionate. I saw him at his 'comeback' VFL practice match at Gosch's Paddock and it was as if it was a Grand Final, the way he wanted everyone to do everything properly (screaming, encouraging, running, putting heaps of pressure on himself, tackling hard(er than necessary)).

Re: 16.Tayte Pears

He can add Kosi to the list too. The game against St.Kilda was his best in the bomber colours!
Hurley + Pears will be a great combination in the backline.
i can not wait to see how good our backline will be whenit is at its full strength, with hurley, pears, hooker, slattery, dempsey and adam mcphee, i rekon we are seeing the new essendnon being born. and finals hopes are getting more and more realistic for us. and off the topic we will have lovett, prismall(when he gets back) mcveigh, stanton, welsh, winderlich and watson in the midfield swithcing around, then the forward line with lyoddy, gumbleton(when he gets back) monfries, naegle, alwyn davey, lonergan and nathan lovett urray. its looking very very exiting. i just cant wait until hille is back in 2010 and patty gets to play a more suited position for himself, and also i hope he becomes our 2nd ruckman for good.

Re: 16.Tayte Pears

I love this boy - seems to always have time to look around and make a great decision. Excellent disposal - creative and on the way to being a great leader in our backline! :thumbsu:

Re: 16.Tayte Pears

Has anyone got stats regarding goals kicked by his opponents?
Would like to know because I don't think anyone has kicked more then 3 goals playing on him. He has been our best and most consistant defender and would think he would be top 5 in B&F. Barely gives a free kick away and infact has won more free kicks himself, which is great for a defender.

Who have his opponents been this year? Pavlich, Roughead, Bradshaw, Walker, Hawkins, Koschitzke(?)...

EDIT: OK Bradshaw and Koschitzke kicked 4 goals against us, so looks like Pears may have had more than 3 kicked on him, but still, you get the point of the post! ;)
