Would nice if a few of our mids like Parish,Merret,Heppel can hit the scoreboard more.
I've thought this, but if we can hit over 100 using the likes of Daniher, Hooker, Stewart, Fantasia, Tippa and Green/Langford, then i think we can get away with limited scoring power from the midfield

Yeah our forward line has been the biggest improvement this year hasn't functioned this well in years.

Hi guys just checking out thread to see the how his debut went down. Looks like he took the opportunity to develop in a higher standard VFL comp and stood up in his first game at least. AFL can a cruel business, but it's great he got a chance in another clubs system, and yours seems to be working for him. Hope he goes on and has a good career in your colours.

Very solid debut for us! Looks to have an exciting future!

Could you give us any thoughts on his time at GWS. I had read from some that they believed he was a bit soft but I haven't seen any indication of that.

Leon always seemed to like him but he came out of every pre season in the best 22 and went backwards from there. His best work for us was probably in the ruck and I never thought he was a wuss. It's a big leap in pressure from NEAFL to AFL and I think that hurt him trying to break in.
He was frustrating at times as a supporter but maybe more his reading of the play. With his size and strength he didn't take contested marks in the forward 50 as often as you'd like.
Not the first tall forward to take time though and not the first player to bloom at a new club.

Yeah, you have a tough forwardline to break into for tall guys.

He's only young and is developing well so hopefully he has a good career.

Good luck for the rest of the year.

I think he competed with lobb for a spot as 3rd tall/backup ruck.
We, on the other hand, don't have the luxury of cameron, patton and lobb to keep someone like him out

Interesting to see what pressure he'll be under from Langford/Laverde/Francis, or if the 3 are now focused on as mids.
Same can apply for Begley too.

I don't think he will be competing with Francis as that lead up style of play is not in his arsenal. I think he's more a dynamic deep forward type.

I think Langford and Laverde will still rotate through the forward line but will more than likely end up midfielders.

Begley I believe will be a mid for sure. Will be dangerous when he slips forward as well.

Middle distance doesn't necessarily dictate blistering pace over a short distance, though. ;)

Yeah I think Blicavs would have him over a hundred or more.

Stewart moves very well for a big guy though and not just in a straight line which is rare for a guy his size.

It's difficult to assess whether Blicavs was chasing hard or not but James left him behind when he kicked that first goal.

So much for Blicavs trialing for an Olympic middle distance race!

Blicavs hesitated for a moment when they neared the 50, I think he considered whether he should block the ball carrier instead.

I don't think he would have got Stewart anyway, but it did seal his fate.

The thing that stood out for me watching him play at VFL is that he is a workhorse . I thought he, was a certainty to play against geelong not because he kicked a few goals but because of his ability to repeatedly hit up and back, and then give 100% defensive efforts despite being totally spent.

His workrate is definitely impressive!

It will be interesting to see how he and Joe go together on the slightly tighter Etihad.

Not actually that early - he's 23. Exactly what we needed in my opinion.

One or two 18 year old project forwards would be a nice target now.

It you measure him against Patton, McCartin, Boyd and almost everyone but the freak key forwards he's on track. He was not going to "break out" before 2016 at the earliest. For all of the obvious reasons that did not happen. I expect that he'll be a firmly entrenched member of our best 22 by the end of the year.

Edit: not saying that I think that Stewart will be a star by comparing him to number 1 picks, just using those players as a guide for the usual length of time it takes for key forwards to develop.

I meant early in his career with us.

23 is still young for a KP forward also.

Project forwards at low picks rarely work out. Backman you can develop but forwards rarely make it from picks deep in the draft so I feel it would be a waste.

When I say 'project' forwards, I just meant young guys.

Imagine if Joey and Stewart got injured right now, we'd be stuffed.
