Footy saved me from jail: Eddie Betts
"If I didn't get picked up, I would be in jail," Betts said in a revealing interview with the Herald Sun. "I was going down the wrong path. I would be in jail or I wouldn't have a clue where I'd be, that's the truth."

"She took me away because I was hanging around the wrong crowd, I was getting locked up, I was drinking, stealing and smoking.

"She could see I was skipping school and doing drugs. She said, 'Nah, we have to get you away from this'."

"If I didn't get drafted I would have nothing," Betts said. "I had no work, I had no education, I couldn't read or write."

The Eddie Betts of both worlds
"When I first started I was probably the shyest kid here," Betts says. "I was too shy to talk to anyone and I didn't go to school so I didn't know how to talk in front of people.

"Slowly you build confidence and now when we do clinics they bring Jeff with me. But I run the whole show because Jeff just sits there and doesn't say anything, which was exactly how I was in my first year. At one clinic a couple of the kids asked, 'Does Mr Garlett talk?'."

Betts can see the irony in his chosen occupation for life after football: primary school teacher.

Nice read like the Henderson article, yet I don't like all these puff pieces when the real stuff is yet to begin.

Eddie Betts repaying Carlton coach Brett Ratten

CARLTON forward Eddie Betts has thanked coach Brett Ratten for keeping the faith after his stunning return to form.

He revealed a chat to Ratten and forward coach John Barker on Wednesday helped renew his confidence following a lean start to the season.

"Ratts was pumped, he's had faith in me," Betts said yesterday after his four-goal effort against the Swans.

"The last couple of weeks I wasn't doing that good and was under the pump a little bit. He had faith in me when others didn't. He kept me in and had a talk to me and said I know you can play footy; just play well and prove everyone wrong.

"(Ratten and Barker) showed me a few highlights of what I've been doing well and what I've not been doing well, and I think it helped."

Betts admitted he needed to improve his work ethic. He said his focus was on improving the one-percenters in his game.

"I just had to find other ways to work around my opponents, basically," he said.

"I think I wasn't working hard enough. I didn't have that workrate in the last two games beforehand, Collingwood and Essendon, and coming into the Adelaide game I was all about workrate. The mindset of keep moving, running, tackling, chasing and if you do that the other things will come.

"You can have days like that where it all goes your way. Hopefully in the coming weeks I just keep doing the one-percenters and all that tackling and try to get a bit of consistency with my game."

Was editing my videos of all his 2011 goals and was thinking how much we take this guy for granted! The way he's mentored Jeffy and Yaz is one thing, the turn around in his fitness and behaviour is another. His football ability is something else though. Clean skills, brilliant overhead for a small guy, not overly quick but so agile, loves the forward pressure stuff and has the best shorts in the AFL.

Here's to you Eddie! Getting you off the 3rd page of this board ;)

How exciting is it to see Eddie at centre bounces?

We barely saw that under Ratts but it seems as though Eddie in the midfield is going to be a regular occurrence under MM.

Doesn't have the endurance to spend a whole lot of time there but in bursts I have no doubt he can be incredibly damaging. No doubt he is one of our cleanest and smartest footballers and he provides a real spark when he has the ball.

In the past the notion of moving Eddie out of the forward line has been met with some resistance as we may have been seen to be taking too important a player out of our forward line. Hopefully others inside the forward 50 step it up in his absence so we can use Eddie more around the ground.

Eddie will slot in beautifully once he is ready to return from his jaw injury.

Hopefully his inclusion back into the side does not come to the detriment of Jeffy who seems to be relishing the opportunity of being the sides number 1 crumbing forward.

Won't be back for this week against West Coast, but is a chance to return the week after against Adelaide in what looms as a must-win match.

McKay added that Eddie Betts, who suffered a broken jaw in the opening round Richmond game at the MCG, was a possible starter for the fifth round Adelaide contest

Betts puts contract talks on hold at Blues

Carlton forward Eddie Betts has put off contract talks until the end of the season.

After talks on a new contract between the restricted free agent and the Blues stalled, Betts called a halt to negotiations - a move that raises doubts about his tenure at the club.

Good luck to Eddie if he thinks we're going to fork out 600k for his services. That's just not going to happen.

I'd be staggered if any club in the competition would be silly enough to pay him that amount, and if there is he'd be silly not to take it as he's simply not worth that much.

Eddie leaving the club is now a distinct possibility. I think he will stay for significantly less than the amount being bandied about, but there is an uneasy feeling about the whole situation and he may well become our first loss through the RFA system.

$600K is way too much, but i'm confused about how his contract negotiations have gotten to this stage when Greg Swann came out recently and said that Eddie's contract was just about done and dusted. Could it be that Mick see's some currency in Eddie and is prepared to back in Garlett and Yarran to get the job done should he leave.

as much as I love eddie, that is a ridiculous price to ask, as he is arguably having a bad year in comparison to the last 3 or 4.
