As has been alluded to above, although he's good enough in this form anyway to play as a specialist batsman, he is more desperate to keep because of his late father.

He did really well as their keeper for a period, before the English went to Buttler for some reason.

Hasn’t been good but it’s a big ask to keep in a test match after playing as a bat for a long time and coming back from a badly broken leg.

Personally if I was England I would’ve kept Foakes and opened with Bairstow over Crawley, however they’ve probably now seen the worst of Bairstow with the gloves and he’ll probably work his way into it nicely.
