Toast 200 Games - Cameron Guthrie

In 2020 he won his first best & fairest, earned his first All Australian blazer and finished top 10 in the Brownlow count and this year our second selection from the 2010 draft will play game #200

Ahead of the 2018 season he made the decision, along with Tom Hawkins to step down from the leadership group, leading to comments about how the club could finally dump him from the team. He's also been something of a polarising player in previous seasons, even earning his own "scapegoat" thread just 2 years ago, but the last 18 months have shown the value of patience, perseverance and playing a guy in their best position because he's turned into a genuine A-Grade midfielder and leader at the club

Congrats on game #200 Cam Guthrie - well deserved milestone

The latest press is saying a deal is nearly done. Cam has been a great servant of the club and it's been a real pleasure to watch his career grow into an AA and best and fairest player. I hope he gets a flag this year. Congrats on 200 games.

Belated congrats must go to one. P. Bateman and his ilk, of course. After all, it's their objective and insightful posting that led to his breakout as an elite player across the comp.

Seriously, though, it has been fantastic to watch Guth's emergence as a premier player in the AFL. He always showed stacks of footy nous and strong skills from his earliest days in the seniors. And, unsurprisingly, he's got better and better the longer his career has been backed in by the powers that be at the club.

In hindsight, he clearly suffered from taking on the utility role on behalf of the team for several seasons. And has thrived since being given the keys to lead in the middle of the ground over the past two years.

Congrats to Cam on a really strong Cats career thus far. Already inside the top 50 all-time for games played in the hoops. And hopefully many more games (and some premiership glory) still to come as well.

And when you add to that the emerging prospect of his brother now going on to have a long career in the ones at the GFC, it looks as though the melters are in for a seriously ordinary run with the Guthrie family for some years to come.

Long may it last.

His last two seasons have been off the charts. In fact, I cannot think of another footballer who has been in the system for a lot of years. Was good early, showed a lot of glimpses + promise, bumbling along for 16-18 disposals on a weekly basis before turning into a 25-27 disposal per week midfielder at the age of 28.

I still wish he can become one of our best finals performers because if he can average around 26-30 disposals in this years finals series, it completely alters our trajectory.

When i think of Cam Guthrie - i think of the 2013 PF - he was only young at the time - and in the 3rd qtr - at a pivotal time in that game - playing on a hbf - took the ball - ran straight down the middle of the ground had a couple of bounces and kicked a ripping goal on the run

Half back flankers - with a bit of dash - its quite exciting watching them - and probably team lifting on the run take a few bounces and kick goals - Andrew Mackie did it - David King of Nth Melb did it - to name a couple

Excellent OP, loved it. Nice little piece from the club too, thanks for posting that.

Guthrie's last two seasons have delivered on the potential he showed in his first few seasons as the small defender who gradually started getting midfield minutes.

#guthintheguts was a campaign I believe started by BF Geelong's golden child catempire :p and it has ultimately proven to be the correct instinct - Cam Guthrie was not without a certain talent and feel for that defensive role, but what he has developed into the past couple of years is indisputable.

Now he is the neatest, tidiest player in our team along with Mitch Ducan, a right-sided Jack Macrae - his nonchalant set-shot snap for a goal last week against North was a great illustration of his ability to execute with precision. He's never been a fumbler and he's really learned to capitalise on that skill in the more congested passages of play; he keeps things super-simple and just concentrates on delivering the ball to a teammate as efficiently as possible. Sometimes the 'meters gained' aspect of his game may clock in a little light, but like Cameron Ling before him he has the type of ego-less temperament that allows him to sometimes take one step back so that his team mate can take two forward.

Really hope Mitch Duncan makes it back for September; he and Guthrie fit and in-form could be a real handful for opposition midfields.

Given he had that heart procedure 2 years ago i think it was, hes done amazingly well to lift his game.

Makes you wonder about why he had his issues earlier on and perhaps the criticism of him, and there was plenty, was slightly over the top given hi running capacity was maxed out with the heart abnormality.

That all said, a great achievement for Cam and a well earned 200 coming up.

Lets get it done for him.

I think he debuted in 2011 Rd1 v Saints right? The low scoring one in the wet?

Love Cam Guthrie - and I love how much he showed me up when he started to hit his straps and deliver what his reputation had promised for a long time. He was a whipping boy for a while on here, perhaps unjustifiably in some ways. But he's a critical utility for us now, an All-Australian and Carji winner - what a champion. Hope he finally gets a Premiership this season. Would be thoroughly deserved.

Congrats to 1 cool Cat on his milestone. I loved watching Cam, Blitz and Josh Cowan doing DAKP and got a laugh outta him posting this to his twitter account.

Always been one of my favourites, never understood why he was a whipping boy for so long. Before he became a ball winning midfielder he played almost every role for us - half back, wing, tagger, defensive forward - and always acquitted himself well. I guess some of these roles are more recognised internally rather than by people who just look at the stats sheet.

Anyway, even as a big fan of Cam I didn't necessarily think he'd become an AA midfielder in his own right, so I've been thrilled with his past 18 months. He was on track for another AA this year until the shoulder injury which took a few weeks to come good, but he's been back to his best of late which is a huge bonus heading towards finals.

Congrats on 200 games, and I hope he gets the flag he deserves this year.

Clearly massively admired by his teammates, which is always a good indication of what kind of character you really are. Quality player and a quality person.

Taken at pick 23 in the 2010 draft, only Andrew Gaff, Brodie Smith, Shaun Atley and our very own Isaac Smith have been quicker to 200 games from earlier in that same draft.

IWWT.

While not as infamous as the Kent Kingsley Krew, #guthintheguts has been my favourite board campaign. Much like with Jed Bews now I always hoped Cam would come good eventually. It's good to see a much-maligned player actually ARRIVE - much better than seeing them fail and get shunted off I reckon.
