2006 draft reimagined....

This one could be a beauty, not counting the guys out of the first round, how would you re order this draft to now? There is a heap of talent in this draft, is it just me or are they all starting to blossom at the same time?? Might go down as one of the best draft for talls ever...

Original draft

1. Gibbs
2. Gumbleton
3. Hansen
4. Luenberger
5. Boak
6. M. Thorpe
7. J Selwood
8. B. Reid
9. Armitage
10. Nathan Brown (Coll)
11. Everitt
12. J. Frawley
13. J. Riewoldt
14. J. Sellar
15. D. O'Keefe
16. Mitch Brown (WCE)

There are some nice later gets from later rounds as well...
Tippett (32) Dawes (28) Tom Hawkins (41) Petterd (30) Garland (46) Lindsay Thomas (53) Robbie Gray (55) S Edwards (26)

Anyway, as a Pies fan I would love to go back and maybe swap that number 10 pick for a certain James Frawley...Would be very happy with the defending combination of Reid and Frawley for the next 10 years!!

I guess most would swap Reid and Brown for FRawley and Riewoldt, but I'm happy with Dawes and Cloke as our key forwards and would stick with Reid, not necessarily as a better player than Riewoldt, but as more suitable to our list.

Would Kanga fans prefer Riewoldt over Hansen? Or sticking with their man?
Would Blues fans prefer Selwood over Gibbs??
Hawks fans can pretty much choose anyone else...If we had to redo it now, as to which clubs would want which players RIGHT NOW, with the benefit of hindsight, I went

1. Gibbs (Carl)
2. Selwood (Ess)
3. Riewoldt (Kang)
4. J Frawley (Bris)
5. T. Boak (PA)
6. Luenberger (HAW)
7. Hansen (Geel)
8. Reid (Coll)
9. Everitt (St.K)
10. N. Brown (Coll)
11. Armitage (WB)
12. Gumbleton (Melb)
13. M Brown (Rich)
14. J Sellar (Adel)
15. D Okeefe (Syd)
16. M Thorpe (WCE)

How things would be different!! Remember first round changes only!!

Interesting draft. The guys after 9 really aren't anything special but the ones above (aside from Leunberger, Hansen and Reid so far) are all very close to being stars of the competition, or already a star in Selwood's case. I'll do those top 8:

1) Selwood (star, one of my favourite players and one of the best midfielders in the league)
2) Frawley (best young key defender in the league, amazing rebounder and stopper but I could have easily picked Riewoldt here but bias got young Chip over the line)
3) Riewoldt (best young key forward in the league and very hard to choose between him and Frawley)
4) Boak (very classy young midfielder)
5) Gibbs (now I really rate Gibbs but I reckon he's being wasted in defence as he could become a very damaging midfielder. I can only rate what I see on the ground though and I'd take Selwood and Boak as midfielders over Gibbs as a loose half back who isn't great as a pure defender)
6) Hansen (just got the nod over Leuenberger. Has taken a while but is showing good signs up forward, which is where I reckon he should be played)
7) Leuenberger (his career hasn't taken off like some people thought/hoped but still one of the best young ruck prospects i the league
8) Reid (decent young defender but I don't rate him as highly as some others)

Like you, I've only chosen players from in the first round. If I were to include all players, then Tippett and Petterd would be options.

Maybe but I think having Riewoldt would mean you'd kick more goals, be more accurate and wouldn't rely on Cloke as much. Riewoldt at FF would act as the perfect foil for Cloke in CHF and Didak and Davis in the flanks. But Brown and Reid are developing well.

Ask brad roo. ;)

Would Blues fans prefer Selwood over Gibbs??

I would suggest so, given the blues often struggle in competing with others. Selwood would complement Murphy and Judd nicely, and he's just a better player, period.

1. Gibbs (Carl)
2. Selwood (Ess)
3. Riewoldt (Kang)
4. J Frawley (Bris)
5. T. Boak (PA)
6. Luenberger (HAW)
7. Hansen (Geel)
8. Reid (Coll)
9. Everitt (St.K)
10. N. Brown (Coll)
11. Armitage (WB)
12. Gumbleton (Melb)
13. M Brown (Rich)
14. J Sellar (Adel)
15. D Okeefe (Syd)
16. M Thorpe (WCE)

Not bad, although Thorpe needs to be replaced.

Goldstein would be higher, as would Connors, Krakouer, Petterd, Renouf, Tippett and a few others. Overall missing Leuenberger for the hawks was in hindsight a mistake, although hindsight is always perfect. This draft wasn't that bad from a tiggers perspective, Riewoldt, Edwards, Connors, Peterson and Collins, if only we kept Peterson and didn't trade for the gay pirate it would be even better.

1. Riewoldt - cant go past a gun forward
2. Selwood - out and out gun
3. Frawley - cant go past a gun defender
4. Tippett - Cant go past a gun forward
5. Gibbs - 4 players in front are much more influential to date, good solid mid though
6. Hansen - will be a gun
7. Boak - solid mid
8. Dawes - proved he is a gun
9. Gumbleton - Dropped low due to injuries but will be good if his body holds up
10. Armitage - will break into the mid when older guys slow down - gun
11. Garland- will be a gun H/B
12. Petterd - Will be a great H/F but needs weight
13. Leunberger - will come good, very young
14. Thomas - knows where the goals are, fast and accurate
15. N.Brown - big unit, could be anything
16. M Brown - see above

Ahh guys maybe you dont get this, I was taking into consideration what those teams really want and their team needs right now, and also of course what they have already brought their team, so Gibbs is in front of Selwood. I don't think Carlton would change their pick, and if Gibbs played for Geelong I think he would be rated a fair bit higher. So Im thinking what each club would actually want right now.

He was only looking at the first round players so Thorpe had to be picked and not guys like Tippett and Petterd.

I've looked through the draft and really it's very shallow. The first round is only a 50% success roughly and the rest of the draft has heaps of duds and very few quality players. Definitely no super draft.

Speak for your own club.

Collingwood picked up Reid N Brown Dawes Dick Goldsack Wellingham and Maccaffer from that draft, along with Marty Clarke who would still be on our list if he didnt want to go home plus Chris Bryan who was a handy filler pre Leigh Brown.

Well we picked up Frawley, Petterd and Garland so I'm very pleased and yes, Collingwood did reasonably well but look at the draft as a whole, it's rather shallow.

3/4 of the players we picked up are in our best 22 so we did alright...

No one in their right mind would pick up a back pocket player with pick 1 with any sort of hindsight

To be fair to Gibbs though, he's being played horribly out of position.

So our National Draft didn't go too well. Still (surprisingly) have hopes for Armo.

But we did alright in the rookie draft with Eddy, Jones and Geary. 2 of which are likely to play in another prelim. Would say Jones close to bargain pick of that draft!

using the top 16 from above, my top 10:

1. selwood
2. riewoldt
3. tippet
4. frawley
5. gibbs
6. boak
7. hansen
8. luenberger
9. gumbleton
10. dawes

Each club's need are subjective but if you think there is any club playing AFL that would pick Gibbs over Selwood in retrospect you are smoking crack.

You can argue KPP v Selwood which is worth a debate but Selwood is miles ahead of Gibbs, Gibbs may not ever even get to the levels Selwood has achieved, let alone surpass him.

And gotta love the OP, so almost every club would change their selections in hindsight except Collingwood would stick with their ok KPD selections at 8 and 10. LOL :thumbsu:

I stick by the point that if Geelong offered Carlton a trade straight up of Selwood for Gibbs, Carlton would decline. Now of course that would never happen, but Im sure they still see a massive upside in Gibbs.

Carlton would consider it and I reckon they'd have to do it. If Carlton offered Geelong that trade, Geelong would laugh and hang up the phone.

I'm sure they would, doesn't mean they're biased as hell in doing so. MC is right, if the blues offered Gibbs for Selwood, I'm sure the cats would politely decline while having a chuckle to themselves.

i dont reckon its that shallow. we got jack, edwards, connors, collins, plus king in the rookie draft. all above are in our best team and getting wide plaudits for their talent, even king has been very good used properly by a coach with a brain.

only failures were peterson (party animal put his arm through a window apparently), kent kingsley (preseason draft, typical wallace idiocy) and clingan (rookie draft, injury after injury stopped him i think).

if miller and wallace can get that kind of reward from a draft then it cant be shallow.
