Most Impressive;

Cooney
Morris
Cross
Giansiracusa
Hargrave

Most Disappointing;
Ray
Everitt (will come good next year I hope)
Williams (body still not holding up to AFL level football...next year???)

I'm still on the fence with kenelly. People were saying he was past it because he just isn't as fast any more but he did show glimpses of his old self. Perhaps he shouldn't have played but I wasn't disappointed in him.

I think leo barry is massively underrated by swans fans and is fast becoming one of our whipping boys (like LRT is), we really missed him when he wasn't playing and we only had bolton and LRT; this showed what he actually does for us.

Spida, i completely agree, i couldn't believe he was still getting a game with us, he moved like a fridge.

The only further point I'll make on Leo is that he's what, 31? 32? His decline has been steady over two years, and has not been helped by his ageing body and more, longer-lasting injuries.
LRT still has years (whether he's judged as good enough is another matter).

As for Kennelly, he's still a top player, obviously, but just as obviously he struggled in the second half of the season and we all know why.
He does still have pace, but it probably didn't look like it because he was so tentative/apprehensive.
He's never been caught with the ball, or forced into error like he was this year, because he must have been worried, even subconsciously, by the thought of heavy contact.

Impressive:

A large group of young players that got the club to the finals and won one – especially Anthony, Thomas, Pendlebury, Cloke and Clarke.

The youth development program.

Forward options.

Disappointing:

A group of senior players who either cannot stay sound or are;\’t good enough to win premierships – especially Fraser, Lockyer, O’Bree, Lonie and Holland.

Losing Alan Richardson from the youth development program.

The ruck

For a good chunk of the year we had a lot of average performers, and only a select few who were consistently good. A lot of my impressive performers have been based predominately on their second half of their year.

Impressive

  • Sam Fisher: Gained first All Australian section, averaged in the 20s for disposals and combined defensive cover as well as some great rebounding work.
  • Brendon Goddard: Continues to impress me as his career rolls along. Another very good season and it will not be long until i believe he moves into that next bracket of elite players.
  • Andrew McQualter: May not be an obvious choice but before this year i did not rate him at all. This year he has found a spot in the side and has provided the team with some midfield assistance and has nullified some of the biggest midfielders in the game.
  • Max Hudgeton: Had a wonderful season in my eyes. Managed to play 23 out of 24 games and St Kilda always looks a lot stronger with Maxy in the defensive lineup. His job on Franklin (injury perhaps a factor) was definitely a highlight, but it certainly wasn't his only scalp this year.
  • Nick Reiwoldt: If you have high standards, perhaps you could question this. But Reiwoldt was still a very very impressive player in 2008. All Australian Selection warrants that.
Disappointing

  • Aaron Fiora: Seems to have fallen out of favour. Just doesn't do enough on a constant basis to warrant selection.
  • Justin Koschitzke: Was quite good at times but too inconsistent. He is capable of some amazing football, but didn't reach that level this year, even when his body held up.
  • Nick Dal Santo: Dal has skill to burn. However 2008 wasn't a great one for him. Far from our worst player, but for such a talent his output was down. The dropping was harsh but fair, and although there was a difference in his performance (a couple of BOGs) he still drifted in and out of games. Can be completely blanketed in games far too easily also.

Pretty much what I would have said. I would have added Paul Bower and Michael Jamison to the impressive list as well.

Both have really stepped up this year as AFL backman, and look to have long careers ahead of them.

So we have 8 of the best 22 being "Most Impressive" in a season where Carlton finished 11th (10th?).

The rest of that team must be mighty shite.

Impressive
Franko - superstar to super, superstar
Rioli - gonna be superstar
Bateman - now a star
Ozzie - gone from bad to pretty good

Disappointing
Dowler (he just doesnt look up to AFL)
Thorp - never plays and when he does he doesnt do anything
Clarke (gone I think)
Gilham (hasnt got any better from last year)

Most impressive-

David Mckay-First year player, shows he has good skills and will be a gun of the future :thumbsu:

Nathan Van berlo- Stepped up a level from last year :thumbsu:

Nathan Bock-went from a good player at CHB to one of the best in the league

Ivan Marich-Although a slow start to the year has come around and will be a very good ruckmen.

Dissapointments-

Ken Mcgregor-I know hes not the best player going hes far far from it around but I was hoping for him to perhaps kick 2-3 goals a match. AFL has past him and should be delisted at the end of the year.

I would add:

Positives:

Bernie Vince: Very good year.
Porps: Improving heaps this year, considering he buggered his shoulder in R3.
Walker: Hasn't played a game, but he is the first forward he have that we can be excited about in a VERY long time.

Negs:

Sellar: fair to say he hasn't filled our lofty expectations of him.

From what I saw towards the end, Brad Moran was making big strides.
I rate him very highly, hope he can stay fit and continue to improve, he's a real gun for you blokes.

There is a differnece between impressive and players that will push a team into the finals or top spot. For example Bower may not yet be a top line player, but for his stage in developement was 'impressive' not all teams can be full of superstars. ********.

This is Carlton we are talking about. Everyone of their supporters will tell you they have at least 20 superstars.

Impressive: Barry Hall - If not for discipline problems and resulting suspensions would have been back to his best.

Yep agree :thumbsu: would it be fair to say that some players have been dissapointing in some parts of the season and good in others: Basset's middle part, Johncock when he went off the rails,

Also before he got injured Griffin was impressive but went downhill after his injury.

Agree absolutely, but can you spell our own players' names correctly please  It's Mackay and Maric. Would also add Brent Reilly to the disappointing list - has all the potential but picks up too many injuries and I suspect his heart isn't really in it.

Lucky for me I have a good friend like you to pick up my mistakes :p.

I'll stick with Kids here.

Impressive:

Nathan Brown. 19 year old kid playing full back in his first season of AFL, not shirking the big boys. Showed a lot of class and potential.

John Anthony. Missed last year with a neck injury, groomed as a KP back and took on the challenge to play forward, to great effect.

McCarthy and Dawes get honourable mentions.

Disapointing.

Brad D1ck doing his knee pre season and Rusling doing his shoulder again.

Impressive:
Shane Valenti: Played 8-10 very consistent games and will be great in the future.
Colin Sylvia: Finally showed something
Austin Wonaeamirri: Absolute gun who brought some excitement to the fans
Paul Wheatley: Probably will win our B and F
Colin Garland: Fantastic young player will be a great key backmen for years.
Stefan Martin: Showed alot of potential in the 10 or so games he played.
Simon Buckley: Looks a good midfielder
Brad Green: Awesome year . will definetly be captain next year
Dissapointments:
Daniel Bell: Did close to nothing this year and has been at the club for quite a long time now.
Michael Newton: Winning Mark of the year was probably the worst thing for this kid. Must of gained abot too much confidence from it as he did nothing on field the whole year.
John Meesen: Gave up pick 37 for this guy NOT TO GET A GAME!
Clint Bartram: Failed to follow up his great first year of AFL . after being injured his whole 2nd year failed to do anything special this year.
Nathan Jones: Abit of a dissapointment as he struggled all season and at one stage was dropped.

Brad Green "awesome"??? I'd have thought it was a stretch to suggest ANY Melbourne player was awesome in 2008, although quite a few senior blokes were awful.
I didn't see a lot of the Demons but from what I saw, I thought Green was his usual disappointingly inconsistent self.

obviously you didnt watch alot of our games this year.
Was fantastic and CONSISTENT the whole season.

maybe i went over the top saying he was awesome but he was fantastic all year long.

For Fremantle

Impressive:
Pav - enough said about this guy, is a gun and a leader
Sandi - first AA selection, consistent performer with some standout games
Palmer - what a first year, work rate is 1st rate and did not shy from any contest
MacPhalin - Played well both ends of the ground
Ibbotson - impressive player, showed glimpses of star quality

Crowley & Hayden also improved from last year

Disappointments:
Murphy - thought he would have stepped up this year, maybe in 09?
tarrant - works hard but for what we gave up for him a tad disappointing
Wiz - was expecting a standout year, not even given a new deal
Josh Carr - basically played average the whole year, in the end was not interested and wants to return to SA

Impressive
Number 1 with a bullet and bold flashing letters: Sam Lonergan. From out of nowhere, just gets the ball, kicks goals, tackles, generally goes about it with little fuss. Few dons fans would have rated his chance of playing 10 games this year, & I thought should have got a vote or two in the rising star
Number 2 Welsh - didn't know where he was at prior to this year. Has metamorphisised yet again to attack the ball decisively in the middle and hold an opponent.
Number 3 Houli - If he'd have played 18 games, there would have been 3 serious contenders for the rising star IMHO. Classy, finds the pill, runs hard, does good things
Unimpressive
JJ - Sorry sight this year.
Laycock - What/why/where/who...
Essendon's combined injury list. 20+ blokes giving us nothing!

Not sure if our injury list hides the weaknesses in the top end of our list, or just tells a tale of the (lack of) depth while we re-stock with youngsters. I think the latter
