I saw this thread on the Blues board and thought it was a good idea. Based on 2007 form, demonstrated ability and predicting their worth to the side in 2008, this is how I rank our senior list.

1. Lloyd
2. Lucas
3. Fletcher
4. McVeigh
5. Stanton
6. Michael
7. Davey
8. McPhee
9. Watson
10. Hille
11. Ryder
12. Welsh
13. Winderlich
14. Lovett
15. Laycock
16. Monfries
17. Lovett-Murray
18. Gumbleton
19. Slattery
20. Peverill
21. Nash
22. Jetta
23. Dempsey
24. Dyson
25. Johnson
26. Hislop
27. Ramanauskis
28. Houli
29. Riemers
30. Neagle
31. Johns
32. Hocking
33. Lonergan
34. Lee
35. Myers
36. Pears
37. Daniher
38. Hooker

This is not a ranking of ability only, it is a combination of the factors listed above. Some are on their way down while others are on their way up. Some will impact more because of their position/importance to the team.

What are your thoughts opinions? :thumbsu::eek:

I would swap Lucas for Fletcher so Fletch is in 2nd spot, he has saved us from so many thumpings, and has been continuing to do so...

Pretty much would agree with most of it.

My effort.....

I've actually done a list like this in an excel spreadsheet where i've rated all the players on different attributes (I think 17 in total) and comprised a list of 'worth' to our team. Unfortunately my personal computer is being fixed so i am unable to share the results with you at this point of time but i'll be sure to post it once i have access to it.

Poor John Williams, not even worth a spot.....

Sorry about that.....

I forgot about the PSD draft.

My bad....

The guys from the PSD go right at the bottom of the list until they play, i did the same for the national draft recruits.

Stants >>>> McVeigh
In fact, I'd have Watson & Winderlich before spike as well

Stants would have a case to argue but if you consider the requirements of the thread the other guys wouldn't be there yet.

With Hirdy retiring, McVeigh will take even more of a leadership role next year and this makes his importance to the team go up even further. I reckon McVeigh was our best player this season and he should have won the club champion although i am happy for Hirdy that he won it.

It'd be a bit tight on Lucas to have 2 blokes ahead of him... ;)
& I'm going a bit more on importance rather than ability
Watson IMHO is more important to the team than McVeigh, who theoretically could be replaced by a few other midfielders/flanks/taggers without a massive step down.
Depending on where Knights sees JJ & Pev fitting in - I doubt they'd get massive amounts of game time - Watson's more important
Maybe not Winders, he and McVeigh would be pretty close on importance. I find it hard to judge leadership, outside of the captain himself. But I reckon a few others - Welsh, Hille, Watson - could assume more leadership if they were called upon

I can see your points/reasoning just make sure you take all aspects into account - skill, 2007 form and importance in 2008. :thumbsu:;)

The good thing about such threads is that there is no clear right or wrong as rating a player is very subjective. Having said this it is always good to get the opinion/views of fellow football followers. :thumbsu:

Personally I feel Fletcher is possibly our most important player, if not Lloyd. Would have them in our top 2. We struggle immensely without him, and our poor record shows we need him fit all the time. Lloyd has the captaincy also, which propels himup even further because he is a leader that the kids respect and look up to. We need McVeigh, Watson, Stanton, Monfries, and Winderlich fit next season and for them togel into our midfield group. Ryder will step up even further this season, and I'm looking forward to Neagle, and Gumbleton getting much more game time, and hopefully earning their spots in the best 22.

I have always loved the way McVeigh played his footy, since he has matured he is our most important player in the middle, lets hope he can get support by our you guns, stanton, weddy, davey, and watto.:thumbsu::thumbsu:

If Mkveigh is our most important mid, we ar ein worse shape than I had ever imagined. Good, solid contributor that brings a bit of leadership and determination. At his age, and with his experience, he shouls have stamped himsefl on the midfield. He hasn't.

A very important player he is, don't get me wrong, but nowhere near the crucial element of our midfield....in fact, I'd confidently say he'd be more important/damaging elsewhere...

Atleast we can agree he is important to our team, the rest we can agree to disagree.:thumbsu:

Hmm
He definitely deserves to be top 15 in terms of ability
But form in 2007 is little to nothing
& Potential for 2008 could be really good, could be zip, depending on his fitness - I haven't seen any training to judge
Not unhappy to leave him out of the 1st 18 I named, but if he's fit, definitely in there

Winderlich at 4 as the 4th best/most importan tplayer at EFC? Is it just me that struggles with that??

I find it hard to believe that Wenderlich is our 4th best/important player in the team, he improved alot last season but not enough to put him 4th and totally agree about Davey's injury we lost alot of spark in our game when we lost him, can't wait to see him play again next season.

Winderlich finds it, uses it well, runs harder than most, links up well, was very important to our 8-5 start, don't underestimate him

With a new gameplan and confidence in the whole group, he's one player i think can really step up and surprise a lot this year

Don't disagree with you there, I believe that because there is no pressure on the team this year we will suprise alot of teams with the way we play looking forward to the start of the season.:thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

Most teams have 6 or so good midfielders
A premiership team will have 10 or 12 guys who can come in and make an impact in the middle - we lack these numbers
Which is why we were hurt so badly last year by Stanton & Winderlich becoming injured. If Geelong or WCE lose a key midfielder, they can bring in a guy like Butler or Prismall, and someone like Kelly or Braun moves from being a #4 to #3 and so on
We lose Winderlich, we bring in Houli (or Reimers or Hislop etc) who's good for a few touches, a few minutes a quarter - not a match-hardened senior player
We were a good side when Winderlich was pelting from end-to-end making options off half-back and delivering inside 50.
We struggled without

I'm not quite saying he's our 4th best player - I'm saying he's our 4th most important going into 2008.

we have plenty of youth that will be put through the midfield, with pace and talent yet player like watson although was not fantastic was important with the centre clearances, and stanton, Lovett-Murray running of half back will be a key also, if he can put a season together it will be important to us, I think that he is underrated, yes there is more important players yet he is tough. Patty Ryder needs a postion and to be left there I like him in the back line yet in the ruck he seems a little exposed, Hille and Laycock are a good team especially laycock's ablitity to go forward and kick goals as he does. I love Mcphee yet I don't like him in the middle turns it over too much, better running of the back line.
