What a difference a year makes with the predictions. Last year everyone had the Nucks in the bottom four of the West ... and now we are challenging for the Western title with the same team ;-)

I think the Stars could well surprise, but agree with catter re Zubov. He has been so important to their team for more than a decade.

The Avs have to struggle, but having a good goalie for the first time in years may provide a spark for the kids.

I like the Sabres to rebound this year and think that Kessel will be a big loss for the Bruins. Emery will surprise and the Caps will ride AO.

Hossa will lead the Hawks to the division title.

Predictions:

East
1. Washington
2. Flyers
3. Buffalo
4. Pittsburgh
5. New Jersey
6. Boston
7. Montreal
8. Atlanta
9. Ottawa
10. Rangers
11. Carolina
12. TB
13. Toronto
14. Florida
15. NY Islanders

West
1. SJ
2. Vancouver
3. Chicago
4. Detroit
5. Calgary
6. Columbus
7. Ducks
8. Oilers
9. Avalanche
10. Dallas
11. Minnesota
12. St Louis
13. Nashville
14. Kings
15. Phoenix

Hart: AO
Art Ross: AO
Rocket: AO
Calder: Tavares
Vezina: Luongo (finally!)
Selke: Datsyuk (The reputation preceeds him)

Anyone see Phaneufs hit on Okposo?

Its caused a bit of a storm on HF and from what ive read, on the ice too..

calgary fans say it was clean with skates on the ground, most other fans think it was dirty and cheap as he left the ground and elbow was up..

I cant get the you tube video..when some one sees it let me know what you think.

It's on www.nhl.com

Looks to be a good clean hit. The hit was there, Okposo loses the puck skating across the middle and drops his head trying to find the puck. If you do that you can expect to find your arse on the ice.

Funniest part is the Islander who jumps off the bench to "remonstrate" and gets his arse put on the ice by Phaneuf.

ahhhhhh it's great to have the NHL back! ;)

I had the day off and watched the Isles/Flames game. Nuts for a pre-season game. From Phaneuf's hit to the myriad of fights, the Flames' comeback and Fleury's shootout winner... you'd think it was a playoff game - despite the fact that New York had probably half their Bridgeport roster playing.

I know I'm days behind with reading around the NHL thread, figured I'd post the video for anybody who still hasn't seen it.

And instantly is the number one player on the Leafs.

His fantasy value just decreased too as he has no linemates of note. The Leafs are such a poor offensive team.

10th in the scoring last year, go look at last years stats, and this year they will be much better, and add phil the thrill and we are truly truly humming.

dont forget komi, beauchamin, pairing up with kabby and schenn and you have a top 3 defense.

dont forget the monster and a fit toskala and i will put any amount of money that the leafs will be playing playoff hockey this season.

Ladder?

Only reason people put them on the bottom of the standings is because they can't put them any lower...

Have a nice day, Angry Leaf.

Nice job signing Cliff Ronning jr, btw. What a steal that was...

you morons have no idea putting toronto last or 3rd last on the ladder. serious morons.

Its only a prediction don't get so worked up.

I still stand by the fact that Toronto will be in the lottery. There are still too many question marks. Apart from Kessel who else is going to carry the offense? Kessel only replaces Antropov production and remember he doesn't have Marc Savard anymore to feed him the puck and also isn't there an injury query on him to start the season? Komisarek is not an upgrade on Kubina as Kubina also provided offensive from the blueline but the biggest concern for me is in goal. Unless Gustavsson is the next Lundqvist, they won't be in the playoff mix. That's just my opinion, time will tell.

Everyone knows the Toronto D is good. But it has a huge weakness on the front end and in goal. Toskala is ok, but he still has his brain fart moments that made the Sharks choose Nabby.

I'm guessing Kessel will be paired with Matt Stajan, what a weak number 1 centre that is! On the left is an aging Jason Blake. I suspect each player will get around 60 points, maybe less. Defense will chip in a bit, not that much and the second line is almost non-existant in terms of scoring.

I see Toronto barely climbing out of last in the division.

There is. He's out till December with a shoulder injury.

The Leafs will struggle again, but at least they have a leg to stand on now in terms of a rebuilding stand point.

And I think they'll eventually trade Kaberle to get that 1st rounder back they spent on Kessel (yeah I know his NMC has kicked in, but he can waive it).

The worst move they can do this season is keep Kadri on the team. I don't know if he can hold up a full season like Schenn.

Wolski-Stastny-Hejduk

(not so bad, but here's where it gets ugly sports fans)

McLeod-Duchene-Stewart
Tucker-Galiardi-Svatos
Hendricks-O'Reilly-Jones

Foote-Quincey
Clark-Liles
Salei-Hannan

Anderson
Budaj

Not only is this the team that's going to lose a lot more than they win, but scoring goals will be even tougher than last year. We scored 199 I think last season, and to think we'll fall short of 200 again is painful.

I mean we're probably going to have two of four centres opening night come fresh out of last year's draft (Duchene and O'Reilly). How do you expect success with that?

That said, the development and youth of that top 12 is exciting (sans Tucker).

Are those the lines you think we will have?

I would have the other lines like this:

Stewart - Duchene - Svatos
McLeod/Tucker - Galiardi - Jones
Tucker/McLeod/Durno/Hendricks - O'Reilly - Durno/Hendricks/Tucker

Koci and Hendricks or Durno as extras

If O'Reilly is sent back to juniors, then Hendricks will centre the 4th line.

I actually don't mind our defense. We just need Clark to be better (or traded).

the big 3 in the NHL atm are malkin, crosby and ovechkin..

Does anyone think any up and coming stars can join that "elite" group this year or next year??

Kane..toews..stamkos, maybe zach parise?? a bit of a open ended question, but just curious to see if any stars are going to grab the league by storm and grab the limelight from those 3 in the next 2-3 years...

thoughts?
