McLean would love to have had his time again. I have no idea as to what he was thinking . Pity, as we are all the losers for it.

Yeah look i'm sure there a number of blokes currently playing AFL who have done much worse than Brock, but the point is, our reputation as a club has taken a hammering in recent times for a multitude of reasons. We need a strong leader who will set the right example for our young list, and set us on the right path. I think Brock has what it takes to do the job, its just a matter of marrying up the actions with the words.

Let's face it, he's had some problems getting his body right over the past couple of seasons, he's only really had one big year in his career so far. I just want to see him put together some consistent form free of injury. I think McDonald & Bruce can hold the fort for another season, and if the stars line up and he wins our BF & avoids the bar-room brawls, etc. then he will have earnt the captaincy...

Giving Bruce the captaincy would be a step backwards IMO.

If Bailey is serious about a new era, with the youth policy, Brock will be given the mantle. Captaincy is a lot more than looking pretty in front of the camera. I can't remember the last selfless act Bruce did whether it be on or off the field, a good player no doubt and has given us some great service, but Brock has done more in 4 years than Cam has managed in 9.

Green was the only challenger for the throne, but threw it away over the trade period. He can come out now and say he was never going to leave as much as he wants, but facts are he was tossing it up. Would be laughable to think of Brock doing similar. Whilst Greeny was holding out on his contract, Brock was giving 10k back from his.

Helps that Brock is also far and away the best player we have at the moment. Captains win you games of football, Neitz did it on many occasions, I honestly can't recall a recent game where Bruce has pulled us across the line, he is consistent but not uplifting.

Brock.

If he doesn't get it this year, I won't be surprised, but I'll be disappointed.

Perfectly said.

The players are voting the leadership group next week, the coaching staff will then choose the captain out of that group and as said above it's set to be announced before christmas.

Anyone other then Brock and i'll be disappointed.

well surely you would think the players would vote Brock to be in the leadership group, and then we can just hope the coaching staff choose him.

Yer ive also heard that it will be out of Junior or Bruce. Im now hoping its Junior, he personifies the club and also if it is him we know it will only be a year or 2 and then Brock should definately be ready.

There's a poll on the Herald Sun website at the moment. Unfortunately they botched it and it says

"Who should be Melbourne's captain?"

Yes
No

I voted for yes. Seems like a good guy.

I agree Yes has some strong points but if you look at No's record he has a strong case to put forward.

What about James McDonald? He may be pretty old now but he has many qualities of a captain.

I think he does too. Probably not the most vocal leader, but leads by his actions on the park. I think our younger midfield guys can learn a lot from him too.

I personally think Bruce/McDonald as co-captains is the way to go for 2009...

Melbourne should appoint Brad Green captain to continue their recent tradition of Tasmanian born captains.

???????????

Neitz - Victorian - 2000-08
Viney - South Australian - 1998-99
Lyon - Victorian - ?? - 1998.
