yeah one with a big afl logo on it , if you think small thats all you,ll ever achieve i am a firm believer in we exist to win premierships not make up the numbers

The problems are as follows though:

A) we are in a fabricated league when dynasties are impossible
B) drafts mean there will be periods where it's impossible to win
C) refer to A
D) once we were the team people wanted to come, now Adelaide is unfassionable and so is Port.

rick, you are witnessing a dynasty as you speak, geelong have played in the last 3 gf's won 2 of them and could play in this years, if they win this year its 3 from 4 and that to me is a dynasty.

the lions had the last dynasty that started only a mere 8 years ago and lasted until 2004 when we ended it for them.

and yet Geelong's dynasty after years of decent F/S and draft picks and player development had a real risk of imploding at several points before it even started after '06, what with player and off field issues and 'finances'.

Brisbane's was helped by the salary cap. Not to denigrate their achievement but minus say 2 key players at some point '00-'03 courtesy cap they may well have dropped one on the way. Cap promoted stability; stability promoted itself in their group, success kept a balance between "team players" Vs ... the inevitable "x factor" player(s) eg Wackermanis.

so my expectation for 2011 apart from short term (challenge for 7th/8th on pure 2011 merit) is to see our club take steps within its power to give us a chance to start a dynasty. a few more risks on some kids balanced by very straight shooting on other matters. I already have a belief we are following both these tracks now but trade week / delistings will send more signals. this is the start of 2011 !

If it weren't for a horror run of 9 losses halfway through we'd have made them this year. I expected us to be pushing for finals in 2010 and will next year as well. There is no excuse for us not to. If you don't think we can make finals next year you've been reading too much bigfooty. A fit Gray, Surj, Salopek and fingers crossed Hartlett will help as well.

The real question is can we be any more than a minor player in finals with such poor senior players (Kornes, Cornes if he makes it back, Ebert, Motlop on 2010 form) and so many "depth" players?

Excellent question but sadly the answer is no. NOt to reignite a previous debate but if some combination of Harlett, Gray, Boak, Pearce, Sal, Rodan occupy the top three spots in our B&B we should easily make finals. We just won't do much in finals until this group + maybe butcher Carlile and Chaps are our senior core

Actually, any year in which we don't win a premiership is a failure.

However, if we put ourselves in a better position to win a premiership the next season, that is a better result than just `making the finals' while worsening our premiership chances with shortcuts and patch-up jobs.

Now that Salopek is likely to sign (or has maybe already signed), it looks as though we may not be a big player in trade week. As a result, its probably easier to have a look at how we might line up in round 1 next year.

FF Hitchcock, D Stewart, Rodan
HF Gray, J Westhoff, Salter
C Pearce, Boak, Salopek
HB Chaplin, Trengove, Hartlett
FB P Stewart, Carlile, Surjan

RUCK
Brogan
K Cornes
Cassisi

INT Schulz, C Cornes, Lobbe, Logan

EMERG Thomas, Broadbent, Redden, Moore

I hope Trengove and Hartlett can play at least 80% of games next year and we can settle our half back line.

J Westhoff and D Stewart will hopefully consolidate themselves as key position players, although I think Schulz will be needed to still play a key role up forward next year.

Would be good to see Brogan and Lobbe equally split ruck duties.

Would like to see Pittard play 5 games, and Bass play some pre season games, and possibly make his debut if his SANFL forms continues to improve.

Butcher will hopefully have an injury-free pre season and kick 40 goals in the SANFL with the Magpies League side.

DELIST:
Thompson
Carr (retired)
Tredrea (retired)
Harding
D Motlop (to be traded)

I'd like to see us something like this

J. Westhoff, Schulz, Hitchcock
Gray, D. Stewart, Rodan
Pearce, Salopek, Boak
P. Stewart, Trengove, Cassisi
Chaplin, Carlile, Surjan

Brogan, K. Cornes, Hartlett

Broadbent, Thomas, Salter, Lobbe

EMG: Banner, Moore, C. Cornes

Tredrea & Carr = retired
Thompson, Harding & M. Westhoff, Dawson & Cloke = delisted
Krakouer = Gold Coast
D. Motlop = traded

Hitchcock & Meyer = elevated
Johns, Bass & Webb = retained on Rookie List

We get a good player for Daniel or a decent draft pick
Have 3 (or 4, depending on what we get for Mots) National Draft picks
Have 1 Pre-Season Draft pick
Have 5 Rookie List picks

If we want 1 more National Draft pick we'll have to delist Nash & I'd like to see us reselect him with a Rookie List pick late in that draft, if he is still available.
