I dont think Gumby for Gunston would happen but if it did I dont think I would be to upset, even though I have number 3 on my back.

Reynolds... Salmon... there are alternative tributes.

I know Leroy sometimes makes me feel like the 7 on my back is a tribute to Bill Hutchison.

Seriously what would Hank slattery fetch on his own, I doubt that much unless a club was completely and utterly in love with him. We would have to package a first or second rounder to get something worthwhile.
Where would we send him?

Stanton is the best/second best midfielder at a top 8 side. He's 25 and coming in to the peak of his form. He is experienced and developing as a leader. He is THE standard of professionalism and dedication at the club when it comes to training (often repeated, most recently by Dyson Heppell).

I would knock back the first pick for him. I don't see how it would help our team or our club culture to trade him.

Until Lonergan was injured he was clearly behind Watson, Hocking and Lonergan in terms of his ability to impact games this year. With injuries and suspensions to all of those guys in the second half of the year, he was our most consistent mid in the back half... But you can't seriously suggest that he's along side or above Watson... Surely you kid...

haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa..... You would knock back the first pick in the draft to keep Stanton.............. Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.. That is the funniest thing i've heard all year... I take it that was a joke...

I don't think we would.

How long would it be before David Swallow got to Stanton's level? Or Tom Scully? Or Jack Watts?

Trading Stanton would just keep pushing our premiership window back and back and back.

You must be kidding... You are kidding aren't you... Do you honestly believe we would knock back the number one pick in the draft to retain Stanton...

This board has gone completely mad...

Personally I would rather miss out on O'Meara because what we would have to give up and look for more the Hocking Crameri types of players where it is minimal spend and great return.

look for the bargains

So go fishing in the rookie draft in the blind hope of trying to land a fish.... That's the way to build a list...

Different yr same old shit, their are really only 2 untouchables on our list Watson & Hurley, everyone else of tradable age is fair game for a proven elite mid.
A pretty strong side was absolutly humiliated in a FINAL against a mortal ENEMY & yet 4 days later everything tracking along fine  with minimal or no list changes! Well **** me dead

I would. Stanton is a B+ midfielder, and they require a good player and a draft pick. You've gone mad, Stanton won't be traded, end of story, only you think that he should be traded

A benefit of getting O'meara (and I think this is unlikely) is he could be a good bargaining chip next year to get Gaff back to Victoria.

Likewise Kennedy to get Dangerfield back.

I normally enjoy the Marngrook Footy Show but lately have been far than impressed by their 'expert comments', I mean just look at the footy tipping that goes on by the panel.

Tonight they showed a list of possible essendon 'cuts'. It included Davey, Dyson, Hille, but most shockingly Reimers and even worse, Stanton. There were others, can't remember the rest.

Seriously how is Stanton a possible cut? I'm not sure where they got this info but they seriously have no idea.

A name I would like to hear peoples thoughts on

Jordan Jones (WCE). Medium midfielder/half back flanker who has been racking up some decent numbers for Peel Thunder in the WAFL this season.

A 4th round draftee from Victoria who is behind a long list of HBF at WCE. A very nice user of the ball and strong in the contest, Jones may be a handy acquisition if we were to nab him.

Admittedaly I haven't been following football for as long as some of the senior characters on this forum and I definetly do not post as much.

But trading the guy who held up our team this year for a potential star?

No thanks. It makes me wonder if you are some of the ******ed Essendon fans that were booing Stanton everytime he touched the ball.

Depending on who u talk to yaco, Slattery is an upgrade on surjan. Remember surjan, the guy who presented to the start of preseason over weight and unfit. :)

Tongue in cheek remark.:)

Doubt that we have a need for Surjan.

I don't get this Yaco. Daniher is a tall forward / ruck and O'Meara is a mid / half forward. They fill totally different needs. The only thing they have in common is their age. Am I missing something here?

Simple

J.Daniher is predicted to go Top 5 in the 2012 Draft.

So we got our GUN ( i hope ) and it will cost us a first round selection.

Not sure that EFC need to throw a a low first rounder or equivalent to get one of the GWS 17 year olds.

How would trading one of our best 3 midfielders in a side with little midfield depth for a guy who won't be anywhere near his level for a number of years push our premiership window back?

It has me baffled.

What people are arguing is that if you got a top 5 pick - and struck gold in the draft - That player would go past - not equal - Stanton in 3 or 4 years.

Cotchin his fourth year is a better player than Stanton, Fyfe and Martin in the second year are near Stanton's level, Sellwood in his third year was a better player than Stanton, Pendlebury in his fourth year, Judd in his second year etc etc etc.

Stanton won't be traded but it makes for interesting reading.

FIS

Dont you think that O'Meara is already wrapped up by Freo or WC.

Dont forget that these players had to nominate for the mini draft.

I said unlikely and now with harvey out of picture the recruiters MIGHT get their way in going after O'meara.

O'Meara and Kennedy have both nominated right?

And I dont think anyone has been wrapped up yet, todays proceedings should be proof of that.

dont forget that Tom Hawkins came with the same hype and look how long he is taking to mature. J. Daniher has already had a knee injury from reports I have read and from what I saw on Sunday he doesn't have the build that suggests he will get a lot of meat on him, he will take several years before he will have an impact on our club and he isn't exactly the type of player we need to compete with the big sides.

So Yes we need to pursue GWS 17 year olds if we can?

Cats got Hawkins and Selwood, who has had more of an impact?

For the people saying that we shouldn't bother exploring GWS 17yr olds, because we already have Joe coming. That's fair enough. Collingwood should have traded their pick 5 (Scott Pendlebury) because they didn't need it, considering they were already going to have Pick 2.

The logic is silly.

"More guns" >= "Less Guns"

Harvey sacking may shift the goal posts - But then again Ross Lyon is known for the short term fix - so may prefer the Clark deal over the O'Meara deal.

Difference between having 2 top 5 picks in the one draft - As opposed to a single first rounder in two drafts.

Maybe J. Daniher will play little footy again in 2012:( and he will fall down the draft rankings.

And also we only have to give a first rounder for J.Daniher if a team that finishes below us places a bid - If a team that finishes higher than us places a bid - It will go to our second rounder.

Time will tell !

As mentioned, the club would be laughed out of the league if we knocked that back...

I've been on record for the last 5 years saying that the AFL clubs approach to trading in large has been very ordinary. I'm not saying trade Stanton at all costs. This was a conversation commenced by what would be required to get a bloke expected to go in the top 5 and wraps of a superstar. People were throwing up all of our C & D grade options. It's insane.

No I wouldn't be prepared to trade Stanton just for the sake of trading him. But I would be prepared to trade most on our list if it presented as clear good value to the club.

Stanton for the number one draft pick (purely hypothetical) represent outstanding value given Stantons limitations.

I recognised in 2003 that the list we had needed to be rejuvinated and that we hung on too long with that list. If we had of adopted a more aggressive trade philosophy between 2003 and 2008, we would more than likely be closer to our window now.
